Curious Case of Imran Khan, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman & MKRF

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on Tuesday broke his silence on reports of his plans to marry again in a series of tweets, accusing former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif of being behind the "vicious" campaign. Sharif denied the allegation and said he would not stoop so low. Pakistan’s political circles have been abuzz with speculation about the 65-year-old chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf marrying for a third time after an English daily reported on Saturday that he had married a woman who was his spiritual guide. The party issued a statement on Sunday that said Khan had only proposed marriage to Bushra Maneka, a divorcee and ‘pir’ (faith healer). Khan tweeted, "For 3 days I have been wondering have I looted a bank; or money laundered bns in nation's wealth; or ordered a model-town-like killing spree; or revealed state secrets to India? I have done none of these but discovered I have committed a bigger crime: wanting to get married." In a series of tweets, the 65-year-old former cricket captain said that he was only concerned about “his children and the very conservative family of Bushra begum.” He alleged that the “vicious, gutter media campaign” was being led by NS [Nawaz Sharif] and MSR [Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman], adding that it did not bother him. Shakil-ur-Rahman is the founder of Geo Television Network. In another tweet, he told “NS & MSR” that their vicious campaign has only strengthened his resolve to fight them. Imran Khan and Jang Group of Newspapers including its TV Channel Geo often scratch each others back and both of them deserve each other. People have short memory and their attention span is even more short like for example take this Memogate which was actually invented by the same Jang Group of Newspapers and its head-honchos Shaheen Sehbai and Mohammad Malick and Imran Khan conveniently used that worthless Jang Group's Cock and Bull story in his Lahore Rally in 2011 and yet both the Jang Group and Imran Khan have the audacity to badmouth each other for mudslinging and interfering in each others private lives  which is actually a hobby of Jang Group and Imran Khan both! Not only that but the Jang Group has the history of sabotaging every political government since early 70s, their Urdu columnists are particularly religious bigots, hate-mongers, ethnic bigots, rumor mongers and they were vicious from 2008 to 2013 when they were playing footsie with the Twice PCOed Fraud Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who with other Judges of the Supreme Court weakened Parliamentary System and interfered in executive branch of the state and became State itself and Imran Khan and his yahoo horde PTI were foot soldiers in Judiciary's War on the Parliament.

Imran Khan blamed by Pakistan US envoy for links to army plot : Pakistan's embattled US ambassador has blamed legendary cricket captain-turned politician Imran Khan for linking him to an alleged plot to oust its powerful army and intelligence chiefs, according to a government source. Reference: (By Dean Nelson, South Asia Editor 21 Nov 2011 Telegraph) ------ Imran Khan while declaring any moving thing a traitor conveniently forgot what he unloaded against Pakistan Army and that too in front of US Congressional Delegation, "Quote" Noting that he was recently in Swat, he went on to accuse the Pakistan Army of extrajudicial killings, summary executions, and "sexual humiliation" of residents in some villages. Khan urged the USG to seek "alternative points of views" about what is happening in the tribal areas of Pakistan, and he recommended speaking with General Orakzai, former NWFP Govenor, for starters. Khan charged that the GOP is "blinded by dollars," and consequently lacks an accurate view of what is happening on the ground. He further claimed that the GOP "whips up the threat of the Taliban" in order to get more money from the U.S. He claimed last year's Swat operation, which he termed a "debacle," was one such exaggeration that was "stage managed" in order to gain U.S. funds; there was no imminent threat of militants marching on Islamabad, he said. WASHINGTON, Nov 3: A senior US official responsible for counter-terrorism on Tuesday directly accused Pakistan of supporting training of militant groups in Afghanistan as well as providing "material support" to some of the Kashmiri militants. "There are numerous Kashmiri separatist groups and sectarian groups involved in terrorism which use Pakistan as a base...We have repeatedly asked Islamabad to end support of terrorist training in Afghanistan," Michael Sheehan, State Department's coordinator for counter-terrorism, told a Senate Foreign Relations sub-committee. The sub-committee hearing was called and presided over by Senator Sam Brownback and the list of experts who testified included a former CIA officer in Pakistan Milt Bearden, president of Stimson Centre Michael Krepon, John Hopkins University Central Asia Institute chairman Dr Fredrick Starr and a Pakistani- American businessman and columnist Mansoor Ijaz. Mr Sheehan recently visited India to coordinate US-Indian responses to terrorist threats but when asked whether he would also visit Pakistan soon, he said: "Hopefully." "Pakistan has frequently acknowledged what it calls moral and diplomatic support for militants in Kashmir who employ violence and terrorism against Indian interests. We have continuing reports of Pakistani material support for some of these militants," Mr Sheehan said. He named several Pakistan-based militant Islamic groups including Lashkar Taiba, Harkatul Jehad Islami and Hizbul Mujahideen, which, he said, "operate freely in Pakistan and support terrorist attacks in Kashmir." Asked by Indian and Pakistani journalists after his hearing whether he found any change in the policy after the overthrow of the Nawaz government, Mr Sheehan said: "We are still waiting for their responses and it is too early to judge whether there is any change." When a correspondent pointed out whether it was "business as usual" with the military government, he crisply said "no" but added: "We hope to work with them on all these issues." Despite playing at the heart of the Mehrangate, Kidwai got lucrative position during Musharraf’s regime when he remained High Commissioner and Permanent Representative of Pakistan at the United Nations Environment Programme in 2003-2004. Even after the restoration of democracy in 2008, Kidwai enjoyed the status of Roving Ambassador until Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani sacked him with two others from the same position on February 11, 2009. The Mehran Bank scandal also known as Mehrangate was a major political scandal in the history of Pakistan between 1990-1994 in which senior politicians and political parties were found to have been bribed by the Pakistan Army and intelligence officers, from ISI, to prevent the re-election and to destabilise the government of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Initiated by the then army chief Mirza Aslam Beg with the alleged support of President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, payments of up to Rs140 million were made by the then Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director-General Lieutenant-General Asad Durrani and Corps of Engineers Engineer-in-Chief Lieutenant-General Javed Nasir via the owner of Mehran Bank Yunus Habib. Intelligence funds were deposited in Mehran Bank in 1992 propping up what was an insolvent bank as a favour for its owner’s help in loaning money to the Inter-Services Intelligence in 1990 that was used in the creation of the right wing alliance Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and bankrolling the campaigns of many opponents of the PPP. The scandal subsequently broke after the new ISI Director-General Lieutenant-General Javed Ashraf Qazi decided to transfer the intelligence fund back to state-owned banks as per official rules.  PTI Leader Dr Babar Awan on Imran Khan, Sita White Affair and Illegitimate Love Child Tyrian

A U-S court has ruled that cricket star Imran Khan is the father of a five year child. The ruling came from a Los Angeles court after ex-girlfriend Sita White filed a lawsuit claiming Khan's paternity over her daughter Tyrian-Jade.White says Khan should apologise to the Pakistani people for misleading them during his election campaign that he had no children before he married Jemima Goldsmith. A Los Angeles court on Wednesday said Imran Khan wasn't playing cricket and added it was time he owned up to being the father of Tyrian-Jade White. The former Pakistani cricket star has denied fathering the five-year-old American girl with British heiress Sita White who now lives in L-A. But the court went with the daughter of Lord "Gordy" White - and gave Khan the official stamp of father. The ruling came after Khan failed to respond to a paternity suit and a request to take a bloodtest. Reference: A U-S court has ruled that cricket star Imran Khan is the father of a five year child. (Associated Press Archive Date: 08/13/1997)  It is official now: Babar Awan has quietly conceded before the Election Commission through the latest nomination papers for the Senate slot that he is neither a PhD doctor nor had acquired any education from Saudi Arabia, contrary to his past declarations in 2006. Not only he mentioned holding a doctorate degree earned from the fraudulent Monticello University of United States, in previous papers for Senate seat, he continued using the title ‘Dr’ with his name. Even his twitter identity is @DrBabarAwan, not amended to-date. But in latest nomination papers, he is Zaheerud Din Babar only, without the prefix ‘Dr’.

His radical break from the past practice has gone unnoticed even by the PML-N, the main rival party that has not challenged this contradiction in his previous and present nomination papers. The Supreme Court that has directed him to produce educational credentials after suspending his legal practice license seems to have forced him to submit a statement of facts in the nomination paper. As for Babar’s case is concerned, he declared under oath in the 2006 nomination papers, a long list of his qualifications. Babar then disclosed that he did his Matric in Science in 1971 from Board of Sargodha; Intermediate in Humanities from Board of Sargodha in 1973; BA in Arts from the University of Punjab in 1975; Masters in Economics from the University of Punjab in 1978; DAL in Arabic Islamic Law from King Saud University, KSA in 1982; LLB from University of Karachi in 1986; and PhD in Criminal Law from the “Monty Cello University USA” in 1998 session. He also wrote his full name as “Dr. Zaheerud Din Babar Awan.”Awan, interestingly misspelled the fake Monticello university in his nomination papers as “Monty Cello” from where he affirmed to have done his doctorate degree. He claimed to have done his PhD in Criminal Law from “Monty Cello University USA” in 1998. Notwithstanding his declaration of PhD degree in 2006 paper, a photocopy was not submitted unlike other educational certificates annexed with the documents. His DAL from King Saud University was not shown either. Reference Babar Awan finally concedes he is no doctor from any university (The News February 18, 2012) PhD matters: Fake it if you can’t make it (The News by Umar Cheema March 1, 2016)

Confusion ensues when you mix religious rhetoric with politics & this is the case with Pakistani politicians since Jinnah to the present lot and Imran Khan is no exception , he tries to ride many boats at the same time e.g. he claims to be real heir of Jinnah and Iqbal, Sufi, Mullah, Secular, Liberal, Democrat, Patriot, Leftist, Progressive etc.etc and all this ends up in confusion. Yesterday, he participated in Finality of Prophet-hood Conference in Golra Punjab to strengthen his vote religious bank particularly the Barelvi votes in Punjab but browse his last 10 years interviews which he gave to the international media on Religious Extremism, Misuse of Blasphemy Law, Murder of Salmaan Taseer, Basic Human Rights for the Marginalized Communities in Pakistan, Religious Persecution in Pakistan, Terrorism and Taliban , and his every interview create more confusion and problem then solving the existing one (evident in the 3 video clips below). If Imran Khan wasn't enough, we also have the worst kind of time serves and opportunists i.e. Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) whose center of attention is Punjab and Punjab alone and they are least bothered that their footsie with Mullahs will not only ruin Punjab but shake the very foundations of Pakistan because core of Religious Extremists is based in Punjab and so far no long term action is taken against them.

XXXXXXXXXXXX claimed that in the last month he has observed a dramatic increase in propaganda activities from Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). He believed that this increase coincided with a number of visits to Faisalabad from activists both of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and a splinter group from the southern Punjab-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM). XXXXXXXXXXXX believed that the activists were involved in recruiting for TTP militant operations in the FATA and NWFP through madrassas in southern Punjab and hoped to replicate that success in Faisalabad. XXXXXXXXXXXX noted that SSP leaders had long-standing ties with JeM, as both were Deobandi organizations that had collaborated in the past in anti-Shia and anti-India activities. XXXXXXXXXXXX shared with Principal Officer an Urdu-language sticker that he claimed he had confiscated from several of his madrassa students in Faisalabad. The sticker, which he stated was also being printed and distributed as a pamphlet, praised the implementation of Sharia law in Swat and exhorted Muslims to pursue the same sort of Sharia law in Faisalabad. It then recounted five steps that every Faisalabad based Muslim should take to begin the process of implementation in the district. The steps were: : (1) cease business and social activities at the five daily calls to prayer, (2) remove all sources of ""vulgarity"" such as televisions, cd players, and radios from their homes, (3) seek dispute resolution through local imams rather than the courts, (4) take Friday rather than Sunday as the weekly holiday, and (4) strictly enforce purdah for female family members. Maulana XXXXXXXXXXXX shared that he had received reliable information that SSP leader Maulana Ludhianvi was on a fundraising trip to Tripoli sponsored by the Libyan government. XXXXXXXXXXXX claimed that Ludhianvi had made contact with Libyan officials in the guise of working against Iran and Shia agents in Pakistan. (Note: SSP was originally founded as a violent anti-Shia organization and has, in the past, received extensive foreign funding from a variety of Sunni states, including Saudi Arabia. End Note). According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, Ludhianvi was scheduled to return to Pakistan in ""a few days"" and was bringing with him a ""donation"" from the Libyan government valued at nearly 25 million Pakistani rupees (approximately $312,000) that XXXXXXXXXXXX was certain would be used to increase further SSP activities. Chaudhry Nisar admits his wife, children are US citizens (Dawn September 13, 2011) Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan assured the US in 2008 that he and his party were pro-American. According to a US embassy cable released by WikiLeaks, “Saying that his wife and children in fact are American, Nisar did admit that he went to the US Embassy in London to renew his daughter’s passport because he wanted to avoid being seen at the US Embassy in Islamabad.” More telling, however, is Khan’s stance on US military action within Pakistan, and how the PML-N would act to remain “publicly credible”. Khan reportedly avoided saying that the PML-N opposed either air attacks or US ground action, contrary to its reaction over the May 2011 raid in Abbottabad by a US Navy SEALs team which killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Reference: WikiLeaks: Chaudhry Nisar did not want to be seen at the US embassy in Islamabad (By Saba Imtiaz Published: September 11, 2011 Express Tribune) Calling the drone strike that killed Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud on Friday “an attack on regional peace by America,” Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Saturday said bilateral ties with the US will now be reviewed. Murderous & Butchering Pakistani Media doesn't pay salaries to their Employees.

http://criticalppp.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Ayaz-Amir.jpg
Khaleej Times OnlineThere is no such thing as positive journalism, a notion put about, mostly in a whining manner, by government information departments. Journalism is at its most responsible when it is explosive and incendiary, shaking people out of accepted modes of thinking. It is at its most irresponsible when it follows the dotted line. Demagogues and second-rate politicians play to the gallery or dance to the tune of public opinion. The journalist with some respect for his calling looks at the other side of the coin. Priests and other doctors of the cloth may deal in the currency of faith. The journalist treads on less hallowed ground. His primary tool is language for without it he would be like a soldier unskilled in the use of arms. But his highest education is in doubt and cynicism. The journalist points the path to no celestial heaven. His Valhalla is here and now. Good intentions he leaves to professional charity workers. For he knows where the best of intentions so often lead. Pomposity and self-righteousness, cant and humbug, and all declarations of excessive virtue bring a smile to his lips.Falstaff, Shakespeare’s comic hero, was no journalist although if he had been around, with his jaundiced views on life he would be hailed as the
unrivalled prophet of journalism. The high priest of the calling, however, would have to be the American H L Mencken who could make fun of presidents and politicians, and journalists, like no one else. To read Mencken even a century later is to get an education into what journalism, if touched by the gods, can be. Journalism is flourishing in Pakistan today but of what kind is it? Is it a source of enlightenment or a primary cause of national confusion? Some idea of
what this phenomenon is we can get from some of the knights of the profession. Modesty is not one of their primary failings. They give the impression as if they are somehow possessed of the ultimate truth; that they hold a net of commandments in their hands and are thereby entitled to bestow the titles of virtue and sin in whichever direction their unqualified wisdom dictates. In the hands of these knights a news report is not a news report unless it is laced with editorial opinion of the strongest kind, expressed in language which leaves much to be desired. We have known many forms of arrogance: military, civilian, and bureaucratic, not to mention the arrogance of self-appointed arbiters of the faith. The arrogance we now face is of a different kind and it comes from what can loosely be called media jihadis, who are as destructive in their own fashion as the Taleban. Whatever the exalted view that they may have of themselves, what they have helped create is a climate of uncertainty in which the first casualty is democratic stability. They rail against corruption and talk of cleansing the national stables but their real target is President Asif Ali Zardari. We all know that with his colourful past and his familiarity with Swiss bank accounts, Zardari makes for an easy target. But the point lost on our new jihadis is that our national woes did not begin with him and will not end with his departure from the office he holds. There is another uncomfortable truth to confront. Zardari, whether one likes him or not, is elected President of Pakistan. And he was elected by no process of chicanery but by the freely-expressed wish of a large majority of the presidential electoral college, a choice not forced upon Parliament and the provincial assemblies but a choice they freely made. We can regret the choice but we have to live with it. If anyone, or a combination of any forces, is out to remove him, there is a path delineated by the Constitution: impeachment. If there are the numbers, and the resolve, to impeach him, this path is there to follow. But if the prerequisites are missing, then good sense and a sense of realism demand that the windmills of conspiracy should take a break and the new media jehadis should rein in their ambitions. Zardari is going to do us no Roman favour. He is not going to fall upon his sword. This is not going to happen. So the temperature of things should come down. And we should return to the working of the Constitution and the logical playing out of the political process. It would help if Zardari and government were to conduct themselves better and curb the urge to shoot themselves in the foot. Zardari is no one’s idea of an angel. But then what is the strength of angels in the Islamic Republic? Zardari has a past. But who in the current pantheon—politician, tycoon or even jurisprudential giant—is without some kind of a past or the other? All their lordships in the Supreme Court once-upon-a-time were counted as PCO judges, taking oath at the altar of Musharraf’s first PCO. But no one is saying that because of that they should commit hara-kiri. On the contrary, the nation is wishing them well and urging them to do their best in the performance of their duties. There’s another thing we shouldn’t forget. When Benazir Bhutto was assassinated many political parties thought that there was no point in participating in the elections. Even the PML-N, thinking that an election under Musharraf would be an exercise in futility, was in favour of a boycott. At that juncture the most powerful voice urging everyone to participate was Zardari’s. We should get our history straight. The lawyers’ movement weakened Musharraf. But it did not strip Musharraf of his uniform and it did not lead to the restoration of the judiciary. The judges were restored by the political process as exemplified by Nawaz Sharif’s leadership of the long march. My lawyer friends may not like it but it was that (Sharif‘s leadership), Prime Minister Yusuf Gilani’s counselling and the strategic intervention on the part of the army chief, Gen Kayani, which restored the judges. Politicians have been short-sighted in the past but for the most part they are behaving maturely now. Like every party, the PML-N has its share of hawks who see things in black and white. But the overriding sentiment within the party is that come what may, and whatever the charge sheet against an individual, the country cannot afford another derailment of democracy. The person who has done the most to hold the line is Nawaz Sharif. He may have been anything in the past, and his record may have much that may be open to criticism, but in the afternoon of his years it is hard to deny that he is conducting himself like a statesman. All this is surely not to the liking of the media jihadis. But then it is their turn to grow up and start behaving maturely.REFERENCE: The New Media Jihadis Ayaz Amir (PAKISTAN DIARY) 25 December 2009 http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?xfile=/data/opinion/2009/December/opinion_December153.xml&section=opinion

Complainant Khizar Abbas Attari is a resident of Multan, while suspect Noor Khan is of Khar and Dr Jalal, who is brother of Noor, is a witness to the incident. Attari told Dawn he had visited Khar along with a Barelvi congregation called ‘Madni Kafla’ on a preaching tour. He said on Aug 1, 2009, he along with others was raising the slogans of ‘Sada-i-Madina’ when Maulvi Idrees and Noor Khan attacked them and uttered “blasphemous” words about the sacred personalities.

He said he informed the elders of Dawat-i-Islami about the issue who advised him not to report the matter to the police. On the insistence of residents, he lodged a first information report (FIR) with Khar Border Military police station of the incident against Noor. Dr Jalal became a witness. The police quashed the blasphemy FIR after investigators said the suspects were innocent. On Feb 20, 2010, the area magistrate, however, ordered the police to submit charge-sheet of the case. Noor Khan moved the Lahore High Court (LHC), Multan bench, against the orders of the area magistrate and Justice Tariq Javed quashed the FIR on April 20, 2010. Attari, through his counsel Manzoor Ahmad Talpur, filed an intra-court appeal against the decision of the single bench. On May 25, 2010, an LHC double bench consisting of Justice Hafiz Abdul Rehman and Justice Mansoor Akbar suspended the single bench order and ordered the magistrate to resume hearing.

Mr Talpur quoted the area magistrate as saying that he would start the proceedings only after the complete decision of the court. The LHC is yet to release the detailed judgment. BMP Risaldar Waqar Aziz Qaisrani said the case had been quashed after investigation as he himself had visited the area and collected evidence.
He said the case was the result of family differences between Dr Jalal and his father, Haji Azad.

Dawn learnt Haji Azad had sold out his first wife (mother of Dr Jalal) to a man of Rakhni (Balochistan) after declaring her “kali” (sinner). Later he married another woman from where he bears Wali Khan and Noor Khan. Haji Azad and his sons, Wali Khan and Noor, are active members of the preaching congregation of Deoband school of thought, while Dr Jalal is a follower of Barelvi school of thought. Both Haji Azad and Wali established a preaching centre opposite the house of Dr Jalal which annoyed him. Dr Jalal, however, denied any family dispute, saying it was a religious matter and the suspect had used blasphemous language. According to reports reaching here, the trouble started when Hafiz Qamar Javed, prayer leader at local Masjid Ahl-e-Hadith, burnt some trash near his mosque. The fire attracted neighbours, including people from the rival sect, who propagated that Javed was burning pages from Quran. Within no time a huge mob turned up at the scene and attacked Javed. When Ahl-e-Hadith’s local leader Master Muhammad Sadiq came to his rescue, he was also beaten up severely. The assailants left the scene when the two fell unconscious. Police rushed to the scene after getting information. In a hurry, a police vehicle hit and injured Muhammad Nadeem (13). The mob then damaged the van and thrashed ASI Muhammad Nawaz, who also sustained injuries. Later, the Hasilpur DSP and tehsil nazim reached Choonawala and managed to disperse the mob. The injured were rushed to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, where Hafiz Qamar Javed succumbed to injuries while Master Muhammad Sadiq was in precarious condition. Following an appeal, Choonawala traders’ president, shopkeepers pulled down their shutters to protest the ‘blasphemous act’. Meanwhile, it was learnt that a case under the Blasphemy Act had been registered against deceased Hafiz Qamar Javed and injured Muhammad Sadiq while no case was registered against the assailants. DPO Arif Nawaz was not available for comments. The case follows the assassination of Punjab governor Salman Taseer by his bodyguard last week, after he called for reform of the blasphemy law under which a Christian woman was sentenced to death. Mohammad Shafi, 45, and his son Mohammad Aslam, 20, were arrested in April last year for removing a poster outside their grocery shop promoting a religious event in a nearby village. The poster allegedly carried Quranic verses. Judge Mohammad Ayub, heading an anti-terrorism court in Muzaffargarh, handed down a life sentence to the pair on Monday, his assistant Faisal Karim said by telephone. According to the prosecution, the organisers of the event marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said the pair had “pulled the poster down, tore it and trampled it under their feet,” Mr Karim said.

The case is the result of differences between Deobandi and Barelvi sects of Sunni Muslims,” he said. “Shafi is a practising Muslim, he is the imam of a mosque and he had recently returned from a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia… I am defending them because I am convinced they are not guilty of blasphemy,” he said. ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has informed the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Education that the University of Monticello, US, from where Law Minister Babar Awan claims to have done his PhD, is a non-recognised and non-chartered university, it is learnt. HEC Chairman Javed Leghari, when approached, confirmed on Saturday that the commission had recently received a formal query from the NA Committee on Education Chairman Abid Sher Ali regarding the standing of the University of Monticello and its mandate to offer PhD programmes. Leghari disclosed that the HEC verification proved the university was non-recognised and non-chartered. “We have formally informed the NA committee chairman about the fact,” Leghari said.

Ansar Abbasi & Jang Group Exposing Dr. Babar Awan "Fake Degree"

According to sources, Abid Sher Ali had recently approached the HEC to verify the standing of the university after the media reports about the dubious status of Babar Awan’s doctorate. Although ‘The News’ broke the story of Babar Awan PhD degree as being fake in November 2008, the HEC’s letter to the NA Committee on Education chairman regarding the standing of the Monticello University is the official confirmation of the fact. It is yet to be seen as to how the NA committee or the Election Commission of Pakistan would proceed as it involves a federal minister, who appears to be more powerful than even the prime minister because of his close association with the president.

It is pertinent to note here that the United States Educational Foundation (USEF) in Pakistan has already confirmed that the University of Monticello was never allowed to offer degree programmes, including PhD. “It was a fraud,” the USEF Pakistan has written to this newspaper when approached in Nov 2008. The minister, however, while admitting to have done his PhD from the same university insisted that his doctorate degree was genuine. However, the latest finding of the HEC about the Monticello University, now formally conveyed to the NA committee, is a subtle disclaimer of the Government of Pakistan to the minister’s claim. In his letter, the Standing Committee on Education chairman only inquired about the university and did not name the minister. When asked if the commission would also verify the post-graduation and PhD degrees of MPs who claim to have done masters and PhD, the HEC chairman said such questions do not pertain to the commission, which is only there to do the verification work.

Leghari assured that the HEC would honestly and professionally do its work without any fear and favour or taking into consideration political pressure from any side. He said the verification of the degrees of parliamentarians, already referred to the commission, would be completed by July 16. Leghari said the universities concerned had been given the deadline of 13th of July to send their reports on the degrees already referred to them. According to the HEC chairman, out of the 161 cases of degrees of parliamentarians referred back to the Election Commission of Pakistan recently, degrees of 20 parliamentarians are still missing while the ECP has submitted the degrees of the remaining ones. NOW READ THE SAME ANSAR ABBASI AND JANG GROUP

ISLAMABAD: Law Minister Babar Awan on Monday strongly advised the prime minister to neither amend the blasphemy law nor pardon Aasia Bibi, arguing that the said law containing death penalty for a blasphemer, as interpreted by the Federal Shariat Court, is in consonance with the injunctions of Islam as laid down in Holy Quran and the Sunnah of Holy Prophet (SAW). In a detailed reference, reportedly sent to the prime minister on Monday, the minister also asked for the rejection of Sherry Rehman’s bill seeking amendment in the blasphemy law. He also dispelled the impression that the blasphemy law targets a particular class of society, quoted precedents of several other countries where blasphemy laws do exist, and strongly recommended to the PM, “...the death penalty for blasphemy provided in section 295C of the PPC 1860 is well in accordance with the injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of Holy Prophet (SAW) and NEED NOT BE CHANGED OR AMENDED.” An unsigned copy of the reference as available with The News, which shows that not only the interior ministry had moved the case for pardon of Aasia Bibi, who was convicted of blasphemy by a district court, but another reference was also initiated by the Ministry of Minorities calling for amendment in the blasphemy law. The law minister’s reference shows that behind the scene efforts were afoot not only to amend the blasphemy law but also to seek pardon for Aasia Bibi without letting her appeal to be heard by the superior judiciary.

He reminded the prime minister that as per the Constitution, Pakistan is an ideological state where the Constitution demands the creation of a society wherein the Muslims shall be enabled to order their lives in the individual and collective spheres in accordance with the teachings and requirements of Islam as set out in the Holy Quran and Sunnah and wherein adequate provision shall be made to safeguard the legitimate interests of minorities and backward and depressed classes. Regarding the pardon for Aasia Bibi as sought by the interior ministry, the law minister said, “The Ministry of Interior is advised to follow the legal course of respecting the principle of re lis-pendens. No action is required by executive authorities as Mst. Aasia Noreen had already sought herself legal remedy under section 410 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1898 by filing an appeal against her conviction...” “So far as the request made to the prime minister by the Ministry of Minorities which is also referred to the Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs Division to look into the reforms of blasphemy legislation as a matter of urgency is concerned, it has no substance. Therefore, no action is recommended.” Citing different examples, the law minister also said that some propaganda-driven minds and agenda-driven individuals give a wrong impression that procedural laws in Pakistan do not meet the international standards of human rights or these laws are not recognisable globally. “This impression is totally baseless and ill-founded.”

Regarding Sherry Rehman’s bill, the law minister wrote, “The present Private Member’s Bill as reported in the press stands verbally withdrawn by the member concerned too......The blasphemy laws as discussed in the preceding paragraphs have already been examined by the Federal Shariat Court under clause (2) of Article 203D. The Federal Shariat Court has already decided that the legislative instrument under question is in accordance with the injunction of Islam and has declared the alternative punishment repugnant to the injunctions of Islam. This decision by virtue of proviso (b) to clause (2) of Article 203D has taken effect already, therefore, in view of the aforesaid resume the Criminal Law (Review of Punishment for Blasphemy) (Amendment) Bill, 2010 moved by Mst Shehrbano Rehman (Sherry Rehman), MNA is liable to be rejected.”

In order to dispel what the law minister called “the false propaganda and baseless proposition” that blasphemy law is enacted only in Pakistan and thus it allegedly targets a particular class of people, he listed Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Malta, the Netherland, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, the UAE, United Kingdom, Yemen and United States as amongst those countries where blasphemy laws do exist. He also quoted a number of blasphemy cases decided in these countries. Rejecting the propaganda that the law has been used to target many, he narrated the fact:

“Pakistan being a very responsible state was capable of creating such lego-constitutional mechanism of trials, appeals and constitutional and other procedural remedies that even since 1986 till date, reportedly, no execution has taken place under this law so far. This fact is an ample proof alone of safeguards embodied in the entrenched judicial practices in this country.” REFERENCE: Awan advises against amending blasphemy law, pardoning Aasia By Ansar Abbasi Tuesday, February 08, 2011 http://www.thenews.com.pk/TodaysPrintDetail.aspx?ID=3853&Cat=13&dt=2/8/2011

http://www.pakistanileaders.com.pk/mainPhotos/Ansar-Abbasi_220.jpgISLAMABAD: Like a minister of the Musharraf cabinet, a high profile PPP minister has also been found holding a doctorate degree issued by a fake US university declared to be ‘fraud’ by an authentic US organisation and fined by a US court.  Although Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan told The News his degree was valid, every body else says it was fake and was wrongfully awarded by a university that was never accredited for such degree programmes and was shut down in 2000 for being fraud. The United States Educational Foundation (USEF) in Pakistan confirmed that the said University was never allowed to offer degree programmes, including Ph.D. “It was a fraud,” the USEF Pakistan wrote to this correspondent on Monday. The minister, who admitted to have got his Ph.D degree from the University of Monticello USA in 1997-98 through its distant learning programme (correspondence course), however, insisted that his Ph.D was valid. But the USEF Pakistan is of the view that the “fraud” university was closed down in the year 2000 and was also fined US$1.7 million for befooling innumerable international aspirants of different degree programmes. The Foundation also disclosed that a court in Hawaii had also directed the university management to return all the tuition fees of the students, who had enrolled with the institute. Acting spokesperson of the US embassy in Islamabad Mr Wes Robertson when approached said that the USEF Pakistan is an organisational set-up to promote opportunities and assist students intended to study in Pakistan and vice versa. “It (USEF Pakistan) gives accurate and credible information,” Robertson categorically said. To a question if there exists any university in the US in the name of Monticello, the USEF Pakistan said: “The closest that any university comes to that name is University of Arkansas, which is in the town of Monticello. There was an unaccredited institute named Monticello University but it was closed down.”

The Foundation also referred to two web links -

http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/stories/2000/05/29/focus1.html

http://hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/ocp/udgi/lawsuits/monticello/

- which give details of how the university defrauded international students and also give details of the ruling of a court in Hawaii in a lawsuit filed against the University. One of the links tells the tale of a student of history and law, Todd Rebillot, who said that he had found the university on the Internet, which looked professionally prepared. “I accepted that at face value and felt confident that (the school) could provide me with an education and the degree I was looking for.” It was not until the Wisconsin resident had paid more than $3000, saw the school’s address changed three times and was given the run-around by school administrators that he finally grew suspicious. “When I started asking questions, then they [the school] began skirting the issue. I wasn’t getting straight answers,” Rebillot said.

Soon afterwards Rebillot was convinced that he had been scammed. Others apparently had come to the same conclusion. Babar Awan was one of those who were caught in the fraud but he was given a degree after which he started writing the title of ‘Dr’ before his name. This may not be valid now. In April 2000, Monticello University operator Leslie Snell was found guilty in Hawaii and Kansas of issuing invalid degrees without state authority and was fined in excess of $1.7 million. The organisation was ordered to refund tuition to all the students. Whether Dr Awan received his money back is not known. Despite all this evidence, Babar Awan insists that it is incorrect that the Monticello University was unaccredited and that the Ph.D degree he was awarded is fake. Awan, who also delivers regular lectures on Quran and Islam on a television channel, said that he got to know about the university through an advertisement in the international Times magazine and also reconfirmed the standing of the institution from his acquaintances in the United States. The minister said that he was awarded the Ph.D degree through the university’s distant learning programme and because of his (Awan’s) experience and research work.

He recollected that when he was awarded the Ph.D degree, the news of his becoming doctorate also appeared in certain newspapers. He said that during those days he was defending Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in the SGS reference before an accountability court comprising Justice Qayyum and Justice Najmul Hasan. Besides the newspaper record, he said he still has the fee vouchers that he had paid to the Monticello University and sent through proper banking and financial channels. “There was absolutely no question of fraud at that time when I got the degree from the said university,” the minister said. Babar Awan, who is known for oratory skills, however, perhaps does not know that the University that awarded him the Ph.D degree was never authorised to do so and that he had been fooled along with many other international students. REFERENCE: Babar Awan declares his American doctorate degree valid Ansar Abbasi Wednesday, November 12, 2008 http://www.thenews.com.pk/TodaysPrintDetail.aspx?ID=146175&Cat=2&dt=11/12/2008

NOW READ THE SAME ANSAR ABBASI AND JANG GROUP

Ansar AbbasiAnsar Abbasi’s column of 26 November is a curious piece of work. He begins by reporting some statements of Law Minister Babar Awan about repeal of the blasphemy law. According to Ansar Abbasi, the esteemed minister has said that he opposed repeal of the law and that no one should think of repealing it while he is in office. Abbasi then observes that this is a difference in opinion between Babar Awan and Salmaan Taseer, the latter favouring release of Asia Masih – the Christian woman who was recently sentenced under the controversial law. Because these two politicians of the same political party disagree on the issue, Ansar Abbasi claims that “it shows serious cracks within the ruling elite about its policy on the blasphemy law.”

This was the first item that raised my eyebrows. Actually, two officials having a disagreement on an issue is quite common, is it not? Especially when these two men are not even part of the same government – Babar Awan is a federal minister and Salmaan Taseer is a provincial governor – how is it some evidence of cracks within ‘the ruling elite’? And who exactly does Abbasi mean when he says ‘ruling elite’? Surely Mian Nawaz Sharif and Altaf Hussain must be considered members of the ‘ruling elite’ and they disagree with President Zardari and each other seemingly every day! It seems that Ansar Abbasi has thrown in this bit of his opinion in order to take a swipe at the governing political party and not due to any substance.

This possibility is made even more probable once the reader continues through the final paragraphs of Ansar Abbasi’s column. Here, he deviates from the topic of Babar Awan’s statements and begins listing a series of accusations against the minister as if to soil his name only. Ansar Abbasi mentions Harris Steel Mill case and Monticello University, neither of which have anything to do with the blasphemy law. He then goes on to say, “Babar Awan is also generally believed as the man responsible for the government’s confrontational mode with the judiciary.” Really? This is ‘generally believed’? And what evidence does Ansar Abbasi base this claim on? Has he done some polling of the nation? And even if it were true, what would it have to do with the blasphemy law? Perhaps this is only another instance of Ansar Abbasi being both source and reporter. The statements of a minister on a controversial law such as the blasphemy laws adopted under General Zia are important news items to be reported. The people should be aware of what their government officials are saying on important topics. But Ansar Abbasi’s practise of infusing his own opinions and adding paragraphs about unrelated scandals reeks of political opportunism, not journalism. Please, Mr Ansar Abbasi, stick to the facts. Regarding the pardon for Aasia Bibi as sought by the Interior Ministry, Babar Awan wrote to the PM: “The Ministry of Interior is advised to follow the legal course of respecting the principle of re lis-pendens. Therefore, no action is recommended.”

The law minister, in his note, had also asked for the rejection of Shehrbano Rehman’s (Sherry Rehman) bill, seeking amendment in the blasphemy law. The note in Shehrbano’s case had recommended, “The present private member’s bill as reported in the press stands verbally withdrawn by the member concerned too......The blasphemy law as discussed in the preceding paragraphs have already been examined by the Federal Shariat Court under clause (2) of Article 203D, Federal Shariat Court has already decided that the legislative instrument under question is in accordance with the injunctions of Islam and has declared the alternative punishment repugnant to the injunctions of Islam. The approved note of the law minister had concluded that the death penalty for blasphemy as provided in section 295C of the PPC 1860 is well in accordance with the injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of Holy Prophet (SAW) and “NEED NOT TO BE CHANGED OR AMENDED”. Barelvi Mullah Shah Turabul Haq & Barelvis support Killing.

In a shockingly blunt endorsement of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer’s assassination, Ameer Jamat-e-Islami in Sindh Asadullah Bhutto has declared that the assassin will directly go to the “seventh heaven”. He said this after a press conference addressed by JI Ameer Munawar Hasan at Idara-e-Noor-e-Haq on Tuesday. The press conference ended abruptly when a JI spokesman Sarfaraz Ahmad broke the news of Taseer’s assassination to Munawar. “Is he alive?” was his first reaction. “Whoever has killed him is a pious man and will go directly to heaven,” replied Bhutto to a question put forward by this correspondent. He even went on to say that Taseer would not have got killed if the government had replaced him. “Aasia Bibi will suffer the same fate if the punishment awarded to her by the court for using derogatory remarks against Hazrat Mohammed Mustafa (PBUH) is not implemented,” he added. Earlier, during the press conference, Syed Munawar Hasan said that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) should also clear its position in Sindh after parting ways with the government at the Centre. He said that Altaf Hussain’s party’s stand would sound vague unless all members of his party resign, including the governor, resign and sit on the opposition benches. He said Altaf had twice contacted him on the phone to discuss the political situation. He was in favour of the government completing its five-year tenure, but he added the people should be provided with some relief by reducing the inflation rate and addressing unemployment issues. He informed the media that his party would stage a sit-in in Peshawar on January 23 against the forced disappearances and drone attacks.
