Judge, 10 others killed in Islamabad blasts, firing .ISLAMABAD: At least 11 people, including additional sessions judge Rafaqat Awan, were killed and 29 others wounded on Monday during a gun and bomb attack in a court in the capital city’s F-8 area, DawnNews reported. Asad Mansoor, a spokesperson for the Ahrarul Hind which is a lesser-known splinter group of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), while talking to Dawn.com claimed that his group was responsible for today's court attack. The group had recently parted ways with the TTP over holding of talks with the government. He claimed that the court was targeted as the prevailing system in the country was un-Islamic which included the courts and its administration. He added that their struggle would continue till Sharia law was implemented in Pakistan. According to police, two blasts took place inside the court's premises, one near the lawyers' chambers and the other outside another office. Moreover, lawyers fled from their chambers seeking shelter from bullets as fear and panic gripped the premises. Officers at the scene told AFP the incident began when a defendant was brought before the court and his associates tried to break him free. Another senior-ranking police official said the incident could be a terror attack but nothing could be said with certainty as yet. According to police authorities, militants entered the chambers of judge Rafaqat Awan and opened fire on him. Initial medical reports said that the judge was hit by three bullets. The hearings of cases scheduled for the day were postponed. Subsequently, police and special forces were deployed in the court and emergency was declared in hospitals. The capital city is currently under high alert and the Red Zone was also sealed. The head and feet of the alleged suicide attacker were found. Pakistan Bar Council calls strike against Islamabad court attack ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council has announced a countrywide strike on Tuesday against an attack on Islamabad local court that killed 11 people including a woman here on Monday. Vice Chairman PBC termed the assault on court as cowardly act and said that lawyers would protest the attack on Tuesday across the court. According to initial reports two suicide bombers resorted to indiscriminate firing before blowing themselves up. The Chief Justice of Pakistan has also taken notice of the attack. More than 500 clerics and scholars from the group Jamat Ahle Sunnat said no one should pray or express regret for the killing of the governor. The group representing Pakistan's majority Barelvi sect, which follows a brand of Islam considered moderate, also issued a veiled threat to other opponents of the blasphemy laws. ''The supporter is as equally guilty as one who committed blasphemy,'' the group warned in a statement, adding politicians, the media and others should learn ''a lesson from the exemplary death.'' Jamat leader Maulana Shah Turabul Haq Qadri paid ''glorious tribute to the murderer ... for his courage, bravery and religious honor and integrity.'' (2007) ‘Suicide bombers given go-ahead ISLAMABAD: The spokesman for the Lal Masjid administration, Maulana Abdul Qayum, told The News on Tuesday that suicide bombers of the Lal Masjid had been granted permission to find targets on their own and strike wherever they choose to. “In fact, that has already been done. It was previously decided that if we came under attack, then we will give this permission (to the suicide bombers to strike). So, they have been given permission to strike anywhere at any time,” Maulana Abdul Qayum told The News late on Tuesday from Lal Masjid. He said that at first the Lal Masjid administration had demanded that these people (Rangers) should go away from here. “We said that they should be evacuated from here. We demanded that these buildings (where Rangers have taken up positions) should be vacated and they should go back. We said that once they go back, we would control our Taliban. But they (the government) did not agree to all this,” he claimed. Maulana Abdul Qayum said that the situation had become critical. “Fifteen of our Taliban and two Talibat have been martyred and 60 to 70 others have been injured. Still the firing from their side is continuing. They are also firing tear gas shells,” he claimed. To a question, he said the Lal Masjid Taliban and Talibat were only defending themselves. “We have not started all this. They brought these Rangers and made them sit on our heads. They imposed all this on us. They have to stop firing. From our side, it has been already stopped,” he said. About the peace move initiated by Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz, he said the MNA from Karak negotiated with the government and announced that an agreement had been reached for a ceasefire. “But, on the other hand, the government continued to fire on us. The MNA talked with the chief commissioner but these soldiers were not accepting it and continued to fire.” He said he could not tell what would happen in the future. “We don’t know what is going to happen. We have already announced that our campaign is peaceful and we want to work peacefully. They brought these Rangers and they were preparing for so many days. So, it is up to them if they want to bring peace back,” he said. Anti-talks Taliban ‘to face armed Imran’ LAHORE: The extremist groups not ready to come to the negotiations table would be facing Imran Khan in a gunfight if one goes by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman's statement given at a party function here on Sunday. "If the Taliban groups not in favour of talks continue their terror hits to derail the peace process, they'll find me armed standing by the armed forces," he told the maiden meeting of the PTI Punjab Council here. Reiterating his opposition to army operation in North Waziristan, he said it would badly hurt 700,000 innocent tribesmen, expressing fear that the victims would also take up arms and become Taliban. Mr Khan denied the impression that the statement in support of the operation had been given to keep the PTI's popularity intact. "I'm not after vote bank rather I take decisions by my conscience." He said the PTI was the first to promote dialogue with the Taliban and the ceasefire announced by the Taliban vindicated the party's stance that dialogue should be the first option. The party never asked that those who wanted any lenience for those who wanted to rule the country at gunpoint but it did propose to isolate those who wanted to talk from those who didn't, he said. Lal Masjid has 10,000 suicide bombers: Abdul Aziz by our correspondent Thursday, May 31, 2007  ISLAMABAD: The Lal Masjid administration has more than 10,000 suicide bombers on the mosque premises and more than one lakh across Pakistan, claimed Khateeb of Lal Masjid, Maulana Abdul Aziz. “The suicide attackers are ready to operate anywhere/anytime in Pakistan,” he said at a press briefing at the Lal Masjid on Wednesday evening. “We consider suicide attacks are right in Pakistan in few circumstances, while we consider them as absolutely justified in the context of Afghanistan and Iraq,” he said. “Our students enjoy the moments when a police or Rangers operation looms, and they get bored when the situation normalises,” he said of the situation inside Lal Masjid. He said, “We favoured the Taliban not only in the past, we favour them even today.” Responding to a question that the strategy adopted by the Lal Masjid administration to solve different problems was helping Musharraf’s agenda to bring liberalism in the country and that analysts think that the clerics were operating on the direction of agencies and basically helping the regime to achieve its agenda, he said it was totally wrong. “We are not operating under the command of some agency, and I am ready for ‘Mubahela’ in this regard,” he added. He said the Musharraf government was not taking any advantage to fulfil its agendas from the actions of the Lal Masjid. However, at this moment Aziz’s younger brother Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi took the mike from him and further elaborated the answer saying, “Sometimes it happens. Someone takes advantage from some action, which is actually not aimed to support him.” He said: “When we were fighting against the USSR, the US had taken advantage of the situation. Our struggle against the USSR was not aimed to benefit the US, but they took an indirect advantage of our struggle.” He also cited the example of the war of Muslims against Persia which indirectly benefited the Romans. Aziz also disclosed that Gen (retd) Hamid Gul had told him during a conversation that according to the Constitution, any citizen of Pakistan can play the role of a ‘law officer’ if he observes some illegal activity somewhere and not find law-enforcement authorities there. The Lal Masjid cleric said that not a single finger was cut during their peaceful movement. Asked why the administration did not do something for the poor and depressed class of society and confined its version of Islam to CD shops and brothels, the cleric said they could not do anything for improving the condition of the poor with their resources. However, they could stop people from doing wrong. “We are doing what we can do,” he added. President of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Parvez Shaukat, Shakil Turabi of Sana news agency, Moniza Jehangir and Rauf Klasra had also approached the court. “My grouse is that without verification the court ordered to place the list ‘A’ on its official website to defame people as if they are proclaimed offenders,” lamented Ms Asma. “What constitutional violation a journalist had committed even if he had gone abroad with the prime minister to perform his professional duty,” she asked, adding that the court had given legitimacy to a flawed list by putting it on its website, but it never placed names of 7,500 condemned prisoners on the website. Ms Asma argued that instead of approaching the apex court the petitioners should have filed defamation cases at a proper forum to clear their names. “You cannot put apple and oranges in the same basket and place it before the public,” she regretted. “We should not suffocate this court with self-righteousness.” The counsel argued that the court should clarify its order as no-one should be subjected to a smear campaign. The apex court never sent its registrar before the Public Accounts Committee or placed its accounts on the website, she said. 2012 : ISLAMABAD, July 19: Television anchors Hamid Mir and Absar Alam filed on Thursday a joint petition with the Supreme Court seeking an inquiry into the list of journalists and anchors who were allegedly granted favours by owners and administration of Bahria Town Ltd. They have asked the court to direct the Bahria Town and its former chairman Malik Riaz to appear along with a proof of all the persons, including journalists, military officials and bureaucrats and any other individual whom they have tried directly or indirectly to buy favours from. The context in which the petition has been filed is very clear. Soon after real estate tycoon Malik Riaz claimed that he had paid huge sums of money to Arsalan Iftikhar, the son of Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, for possible relief in certain court cases, a leaked conversation between Mr Riaz and two anchorpersons during intervals of a talk show had provoked public anger against the media. The following day a list apparently on the letterhead of the Bahria Town was circulated on social media, containing names of the anchors and journalists allegedly paid hefty amounts by the Bahria Town besides luxury cars, plots, houses and sponsored visits to foreign countries. The petition seeks directions to the Federal Board of Revenue to produce asset and income statements of all media persons under scrutiny and question. It also seeks directions to the Federal Investigation Agency to inquire as to who spread the list of media persons on social media and through short messaging service (SMS). The scope of the petition is wide ranging as it not only challenges the legality of establishment and maintenance of secret fund by the information ministry and seeks the court to summon complete record of the money doled out to various elements along with the purpose, but also pleads for asking the DG of Anti-Corruption of Punjab police to reveal reasons of hushing up a scam involving misuse of Rs640 million government funds. It also questions the legal status of code of conduct for the electronic media and calls for disclosure of assets and political affiliation of TV channel owners. The petition says it was essential that rags to riches story of Malik Riaz be made public as to how an ordinary man over the course of less than two decades became one of the richest man in the country. It questions the dubious nature of land acquisition by Malik Riaz and the Bahria Town and calls for exposing certain criminal element aiding and abetting Malik Riaz as his muscle by their active role in forcibly taking over possession of land from real owners. The petitioners have asked the court to either adjudicate and inquire into the issues itself or to constitute a commission for the purpose. 2009: Rampant corruption real problem: Malik Riaz RAWALPINDI: There is no economic problem in Pakistan but the rampant corruption, and if there is no corruption and left alone by the US and Britain, the country could achieve self-reliance within four years. Malik Riaz Hussain, head of Bahria Town, stated this while speaking as chief guest at a forum on problems faced by the Pakistani expatriates in property affairs, particularly in purchase of plots and after that. The event was organised by Daily Jang and Geo News, London, and panellists included Lord Nazir Ahmed, Zubair Gul, Mohsin Akhter and Ahmed Shahzad while Iftikhar Qaiser hosted the forum. “In this regard, we had also suggested some steps through we could have repaid the country’s debt,” Malik Riaz said. “In fact, every big figure in Pakistan is part of land mafia as no poor can grab land of another, therefore, there is a need to lay hands on big fish. All those sitting in the government are part of the mafia, otherwise a law can be passed within 24 hours,” he said. Malik Riaz said that all areas have their own desperados who do not allow setting up of schools in the respective areas so that people could not get education. He said that he did not get education from college or university and has learnt everything from experiences of his life. He said that an under-construction university affiliated with Middlesex University of Britain would start functioning in Pakistan. “After the October 8, 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, the government had no machinery to remove debris and without any request from the government, we shifted our machinery to the quake-hit areas. We have left no room for a fraud in Bahria Town project and any other scheme in which it is a partner. We are always alert about the mafia. Whenever I announce a new scheme, the pocket plots are purchased there in a single night. Then I pay several times more to acquire such plots so that every person can get a plot,” Malik Riaz said. “Under a law of the Punjab government, if anybody purchase 80 per cent land anywhere, he can get the remaining 20 per cent land vacated after payment to the owners,” he added. The Bahria Town chief said that according to his estimates, currently Pakistan needs 700,000 new houses annually whereas the government is building only 250,000 houses. He said that neither he is a political person nor has any intention to join politics. He said he has allocated 75 per cent of his assets for welfare activities while the remaining 25 per cent is meant for his family. “There is nothing to worry about and expatriate Pakistanis should make investment in their homeland without any fear. Only there is a need for purchasing property and making investment in a planned manner,” he said. Malik Riaz said that Bahria Town is the largest housing project in Asia with annual turnover of $1 billion. He said that 20,000 people are employed in the Bahria Town project and thus it is source of income for 100,000 people. He said that Henry Ford, the owner of the American car manufacturer, Ford, impressed him immensely for being a semi-educated person like himself. Quoting Henry Ford that he desired always to be remembered as a philanthropist, Malik Riaz said it is his wish that instead of a real estate tycoon he is remembered as a welfare tycoon. A large number of Pakistani expatriates in Britain attended the forum held in a big hall of the House of Lords. There was so much rush of people that around 150 people stood for two hours while another 150 people could not attend the forum because the management of the hall had stopped them outside the hall. Perhaps this first hurdle may be the only big hurdle and may never be crossed. The peers, naturally those who come out unscathed and "clean", should sit down to formulate lists of those who have been publicly demonstrating a lack of intellectual, moral and professional integrity. Big names like Minhaj Barna, Mushahid Hussain, Maleeha Lodhi, Wajid Shamsul Hassan, Nazir Naji, Ataul Haq Qasmi, Ayaz Amir, Hussain Haqqani, Irshad Ahmed Haqqani, Najam Sethi, Nasim Zehra, Jamiluddin Aali and many others who sought or accepted political, diplomatic or government jobs, or joined political parties as activists, should be asked to explain why they did not quit journalism to do so and why they continued to use the profession to get, keep or regain lucrative jobs or positions of power. How do they retain, or claim to retain, their objectivity and credibility, once they have demonstrated their political ambitions. In the least they should have apologised to the profession. Some of them have been going in and out of journalism so frequently as if the profession was a revolving door only to be used when they needed a push to restore their lost position of political, economic or administrative influence and power. Some others, like the once-revered Minhaj Barna, who led the trade union movement of journalists and whose "Barna Group" of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists still exists, accepted so petty, temporary and at times demeaning jobs that the entire profession could only hang its head in shame. Scenes when stalwarts of the profession like him were seen waiting outside offices of petty bureaucrats in Islamabad’s corridors of power, to get an extension of their foreign assignment were, to say the least, despicable, bringing no merit to Pakistani journalism. I would never forget a supposedly well known name in today's op-ed pages who, in order to "please" a lady ambassador in Washington, turned himself into her private photographer and started taking her pictures with all those present at a grand farewell dinner thrown at her official residence. For three hours this newspaper columnist behaved like a personal privately hired professional. He even carried his "act of sycophancy" to the next day at the airport where people went to see her off, clicking rolls and rolls of pictures with the ambassador sitting, standing, waving and smiling at every Tom, Dick, Harry and Larry. Even junior embassy staffers started making jokes about this senior journalist and his "buttering skills". To his ultimate disgrace, he was never obliged by the slick ambassador, despite his publicly self-demeaning conduct. But later these very skills worked well with the successor political government and he landed a cushy government job in Islamabad. The moment the government was ousted, his columns started attacking his previous employers. Still he retains his claim to be an "impartial and objective" analyst and writer and does not include himself in the long list of trapeze artists that crowd the media circus in Pakistan. The author would like to clarify that it is not a personal attack, but an attempt to question the ideas and personal allegations expressed in the above article. In the words of the author, What proof did Mr Sehbai offer that the 12 people mentioned in the article had become millionaire(s) overnight and that the wealth they allegedly earned was unlawful?  "Who will bell the bad, fat cats?" This is a model piece of journalism i.e. it "reflects superficial thought and research, a popular slant and hurried composition...as distinguished from scholarly writing."(Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language). We all live in the proverbial glass house. Of course, anyone may decide if and when to cast the first stone. You have recklessly exercised that option. It is one thing to "measure" someone by a "yardstick". However, it is downright cruel to flog people publicly with what you may misguidedly characterize as a "yardstick". You refer to Minhaj Barna as "the once-revered...who led the trade union movement of journalists... (but) accepted so petty, temporary and at times demeaning jobs that the entire profession could only hang its head in shame...." Barna Saheb is still revered! What is a "petty" and "demeaning" job? Did he put an honest day's work in whatever job he held? Was he qualified for the job, no matter how petty and demeaning? It is better to do a demeaning job than to demean the job one does.

The "entire profession" of journalism ought to have hung its head in shame not because Barna Saheb allegedly sought and accepted "demeaning jobs" but because he had to do so. He did so much for this "entire  profession" and yet none of its self proclaimed vigilantes came to his rescue in his old age and in his time of need. What do you want? Journalists of "integrity" should murder their families and then commit suicide in their twilight years simply to please hypocrites among their ranks? Without responsibilities, we are all capable of being very bold. It is the welfare of those whom we love that makes us stoop--sometime to our own disliking. There is no such thing as objective and/or independent journalism. Let me give you an insight into the proper use of analogies because an analogy contains the genetic map, so to speak, showing you exactly the nature of the beast.

Media is called a watchdog, correct? The analogy of a watchdog tells us that it is definitely "owned" to protect certain specific interests. A watchdog is always on a leash. The owners must ensure that the dog doesn't relieve itself on the property of others just because it perceives itself as an "independent dog"! The watchdog is supposed to bark only at strangers and outsiders. If it barks at the owners or at fellow dogs, it becomes an irritation--not to be tolerated indefinitely. The day it bites or attempts to bite, it is put to sleep. For the time being, I am leaving your subtleties alone. But tell me, since when has someone trying "to please a lady...in Washington" has required observers to send a reference to the Journalistic Accountability Bureau (JAB)?

You are from Peshawar. Be understanding of the fundamental human right that "Har Bandey Nu'n Dil Peshauri Karan Da Hukk Hai" (Sorry folks, this cannot be translated). As for taking photographs at a farewell dinner or at the airport, let me say that "parting is such sweet sorrow" that I don't blame anyone for preserving it on the film for pure academic pleasure later on. You accuse "stalwarts of the profession" of "waiting outside the offices of petty bureaucrats" to "get an extension of their foreign assignment". Every journalist is not fortunate enough to have an unabashed practitioner of nepotism as an uncle at a major newspaper. Please understand that God Almighty did not allow us to choose our parents. The same goes about uncles! So, don't rub it in! The Pakistani "journalists" living or stationed here (in the West)have no right to judge their distant peers who live and practice journalism in a totally different environment. The only exception would be those who come out in public moaning and groaning about being victimized. We do not need an Altaf Hussain of journalism in United States! If you wish to hold peers accountable, a proper way is to evaluate their work and products. This can be done by taking specific stories and columns and measuring them with the "yardstick"of journalistic and linguistic principles. This may be done in a "media watch" type of column. Using your own approach, of suspecting the motives (the hidden agendas), please consider this (and correct me, if I am wrong): The DAWN-USA.com is a business for profit web-site owned by you and/or your immediate family. You have advertisers who sponsor on the basis of "traffic" to the web-site. Your advertising rate also depends on the number of people who visit.

Please answer these questions, if you have any respect whatsoever for your own "credibility", if any, and "integrity", if any:

1) Are you losing your main source of income (DAWN Correspondent) in near future and, therefore, need to boost your income from other sources (like your web-site business)?

2) Have your web-site revenues fallen to a point where advertisers may withdraw unless you boost the traffic?

3) Or, you already have or plan to ask the advertisers to increase their rates because of the purported or anticipated increased traffic to your web site (as a result of this reckless attack on the professional integrity of your peers and others)?

It is this last possibility that disturbed me enough to oppose your approach. You may continue this disconcerting approach simply to maintain traffic to your web-site. By wilfully using a "popular slant" (see para three) you may be trying to increase your income at the expense of other peoples' reputations. 2009: MQM benefited the most from NRO ISLAMABAD, Nov 18 The government did not present in the National Assembly a list of beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) despite a promise made by the prime minister to that effect. The list has names of about 5,800 people who were facing financial irregularities and criminal cases. The list obtained by Dawn shows that 3,775 cases (mostly criminal) were against leaders and workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Leaders of the Pakistan People`s Party, Pakistan Muslim League-N, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) and Awami National Party are also among the beneficiaries. The fate of the NRO is hanging in the balance and there is a possibility that corruption cases dumped under the ordinance might be reopened. Sources in the government said that pressure exerted by coalition partners had forced the government not to present the list of the beneficiaries in the National Assembly. They said there was pressure from the MQM and the JUI-F because hundreds of their workers allegedly involved in corruption and criminal cases had availed themselves of immunity under the NRO. The PPP decided to take the NRO to parliament, but reversed the decision when the coalition partners refused to vote for it. However, a government spokesman said the list would be presented in 15 days as promised by the prime minister. “The law minister was to present the list of NRO beneficiaries in the last NA session but he could not do so because the record was not consolidated,” the spokesman said. The next session of the National Assembly is likely to be held after Eidul Azha. Meanwhile, NAB has started consultations with its legal experts to decide the stance it would take after the deadline for parliamentary approval of the NRO ends on Nov 28. 2012: NRO beneficiaries not entitled to hold govt office: CJ Iftikhar 27 January, 2012 ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursday declared that the beneficiaries of the defunct National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) could not hold government offices. The Supreme Court admitted a petition for regular hearing against Sharmila Farooqui's eligibility as an adviser to the Sindh chief minister as well as member of the provincial cabinet. The chief justice ordered the removal of objections placed by the Registrar's office on the application and directed it for regular hearing. Petitioner Habib Wahabul Khairi, Chairman Al-Jehad Trust, appeared in person, and said Sharmila had taken relief under the National Reconciliation Ordinance. The Chief Justice observed that if she had taken relief under the plea bargain, then her case was a continuation of the NRO issue. He remarked that her eligibility as an adviser in the provincial cabinet should be reviewed as those who got relief under the NRO were no longer entitled for such benefits now. Khairi had made the federation, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of Sindh, NAB chairman, National Savings Director General, Usman Farooqui, Aneesa Farooqui, Sharmila Farooqui and State Bank as respondents. Qadri ready to become caretaker premier 29th December, 2012 : LAHORE, Dec 28: Tehrik Minjhajul Quran chief Dr Tahirul Qadri is not a candidate for the general election but will accept the challenge of becoming the caretaker prime minister in case “millions of participants in his long march and the nation force him to do so”. The TMQ chief held a marathon press conference in Model Town on Friday where he tried to dispel ‘certain apprehensions’ about his movement. On one occasion he broke down while giving details about funding for the movement. He said his wife and daughters had already sold their gold ornaments and were now planning to sell their house to fund the TMQ long march. “I am determined not to contest the upcoming election. However, if the participants in my march and the nation as well press me to become the caretaker premier, (which I really don’t want) I will be ready to accept this challenge by doing unprecedented electoral reforms amid massive accountability for the first time in the history of the country,” he said. He said he and the TMQ had a one-point agenda — the formation of an honest and trustworthy caretaker government after involving all stakeholders. And this should introduce electoral reforms in order to bring a leadership for the country that could represent all segments of society, including journalists, farmers, workers, lawyers and traders. The TMQ chief said as the armed forces and the judiciary were important part of the country’s democratic and electoral system, there was no harm in taking them on board. “We call military in flood-hit areas, for collection of bills and for several civic issues. Why are we afraid of consulting them on such an important issue. Similarly, we can involve judiciary in this process by seeking legal and constitutional guidance in this regard,” he said. Dr Qadri stressed that the long march would be peaceful as the TMQ would not allow anyone to take over the country on the pretext of their march and law and order. Commenting on rampant corruption in the country, he said it was a major problem and a cause of weakening of state institutions. He quoted a former prime minister of New Zealand, David Lange, as having told him in late 80s about huge kickbacks by a Pakistani premier. He said Bob Hawke (a former Australian PM) had informed him about the demand of 30 per cent share by a top Pakistani authority when Australia planned making foreign investment in Pakistan. He expressed his confidence in the present judiciary and military leadership, saying both were playing a vital role in saving the democratic system. 2009 MQM beneficiary in mostly criminal cases ISLAMABAD: With Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Huassain’s name on top of the list of MQM leaders who benefited from the NRO – details of the 72 cases against him show that all of the lawsuits were registered on criminal charges. Details show that 31 of the cases have been registered on murder charges, 11 on attempted murder charges, three on kidnapping charges, 25 on hooliganism charges and two on other charges. In all 3,230 cases – most of which had been registered against MQM members – were withdrawn in Sindh. Almost all cases against MQM leaders were registered on criminal charges. Other top MQM leaders who benefited from NRO include Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Farooq Sattar, federal Minister for Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri and Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad. ---- Afzal Sindhu said persons who had been benefiting from NRO’s Article-2 in Sindh and in lieu of the Review Board, included MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Babar Ghauri, Ishratul Ebad Khan, Dr Imran Farooq, Nouman Sehgal, Dr Farooq Sattar, Saleem Shehzad, Kanwar Khalid Younis, and Safdar Baqri. Sindh Minister Siraj Durrani and certain MQM provincial ministers and MPAs are also included in the list of such beneficiaries. -- LAHORE: As many as 182 criminal cases have been withdrawn under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) against 11 mainstream politicians of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, in addition to dozens of cases against politicians of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), National Accountability Bureau sources told Daily Times on Friday. Former president Pervez Musharraf had promulgated the NRO on October 5, 2007 and given political relief to a total of 8,041 people against any cases registered against them between January 01, 1986 and October 12, 1999. The move came after a reported “under-hand deal” with mainstream politicians. The ordinance is set to lapse today (Saturday). According to the NAB sources, MQM politicians including Altaf Hussain, Farooq Sattar, Ishratul Ibad, Imran Farooq, Babar Ghauri, Shoaib Bukhari, Saleem Shahzad, Waseem Akhtar, Safdar Baqri and Kanwar Khalid Younus, among others, had been charged with cases of 68 murders, 30 attempted murders, 10 kidnappings and 70 balwa (rioting) cases. Three murders, an attempted murder, two kidnappings and 10 rioting cases had been registered against MQM leader Safdar Baqri, while Farooq Sattar had been accused of involvement in five murders, four attempted murders and 13 rioting cases. There were 13 cases of murder, three attempted murders and five rioting cases registered against Shoaib Bukhari. Kanwar Khalid Younus had been charged with four murders, five attempted murders and three rioting cases, while a murder case, an attempted murder and five rioting cases were registered against Waseem Akhtar. Babar Ghauri was accused of four murders, rioting and two counts of attempted murder. Two kidnappings and two rioting cases were registered against Saleem Shahzad. MQM’s governor in Sindh, Ishratul Ibad, along with some other accused had been charged with attempted murder, while a case had also been registered against MNA Noman Sehgel. Altaf had reportedly been sentenced to 27 years imprisonment, in one of the cases against him by a special anti-terrorism court two years after he left Pakistan. Although, the Sindh High Court later acquitted him of those charges in 1998, he had taken benefit of the NRO in three kidnapping cases registered against him. 2009: 3576 criminal cases against Altaf, others withdrawn KARACHI At least 83 corruption cases registered against 200 persons including Interior Minster Rehman Malik, Salman Farooqi, Sindh Minister Agha Siraj Durani, and other former bureaucrats and politicians have been withdrawn under the cover of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) in Sindh. Moreover, a large number of the 3576 criminal cases registered against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, Dr Farooq Sattar, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad, and others were also withdrawn, invoking the NRO. A list of the cases and the names of accused persons who benefited from the NRO provision in Sindh, has been sent to the federal government which has already announced to unveil the list of the persons whose cases have been withdrawn. A Sindh government official privy to the matter said that the majority of the beneficiaries include former bureaucrats and government officials. Meanwhile, some of such bureaucrats continue to hold higher posts in the federal government while some are serving in the foreign service. Official sources said that a total 83 of corruption cases pending in five Accountability Courts in Sindh-Karachi against 200 persons including politicians and former bureaucrats were withdrawn under NRO. According to details, 43 corruption cases were withdrawn from Accountability Court (AC)-1, 22 from AC-2, 17 from AC-4 and one from AC-5. The sources concerned confirmed that a small number of politicians benefited from NRO while the majority of such persons included former government officials, autonomous bodies chiefs and banks heads. However, Sindh Minister for Local Government Department Agha Siraj Durani who falls in the category of politicians who benefited from NRO. The corruption case against him pending in Accountability Court has been withdrawn. Mr Durani is considered as the close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari. After 2008 general elections, he was expecting to grab the slot of Sindh Chief Minister, but his name was dropped due to untold reasons. Similarly, the name of Interior Minister Rehman Malik forms part of the list of the persons whose corruption cases have been withdrawn. A corruption case was pending in Accountability Court Karachi against Mr Malik in his capacity as former Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Others who benefited from NRO are: former President National Bank of Pakistan MB Abbasi, currently serving as Pak Ambassador in Iran, former bureaucrat Salman Farooqi, currently serving Principal Staff officer of President of Pakistan, Siraj Shamsul Hassan, a businessman Chaudhry Sharif, former bank president Younas Dalmia, former Vice-President of Habib Bank, Pir Didar Jan Sarhandi, former Secretary Board of Revenue of Sindh government, Ghulam Abbas Soomor and former official of Board of Revenue of Sindh Ramesh Odesi. MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, MQM Parliamentary leader in National Assembly Dr Farooq Sattar and other party workers are some of the beneficiaries. The cases registered against them were withdrawn. A NRO committee headed by Justice (r) Ghous Muhammad and including former Advocate General Of Sindh Khawaja Naveed and Law Secretary Ghulam Nabi Shah had reviewed the criminal cases which were pending in courts against MQM leaders and workers of other political parties. After a thorough review, the committee sent its recommendations to the then Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim for withdrawal of 3576 criminal cases under NRO. According to the sources, at least 95 per cent of the total criminal cases pertained to MQM leaders and workers. Such persons were nominated in the FIRs registered for torching vehicles during strike calls in the City. 2009: KARACHI: MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain has said that his party respects the Supreme Court judgment on the National Reconciliation Ordinance. “We respect the Supreme Court judgment and we believe in the freedom of judiciary,” he was quoted as saying in a short statement issued here by the party’s Rabita Committee. MQM leader Mohammad Anwar told The News from Dubai that others should also respect the verdict. Meanwhile, Sindh Minister for Local Bodies Agha Siraj Durrani said he was ready to face all the cases against him, adding his name was wrongly placed on the NRO list. When Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Ghauri was asked to comment on the issue, he said the MQM Coordination Committee will issue an official statement from London. 2007: Altaf wants CJ to tender resignation: KARACHI, May 12: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain on Saturday asked Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to resign from his post for violating his oath of office. “Mr Chief Justice, you had breached the oath taken under the Constitution by taking another oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order. I demand that you make an apology to the whole nation for this act, tender resignation and then come forward for the cause of the independence of the judiciary,” he said while addressing a rally called by the party against what was described as political jugglery in the name of the independence of the judiciary. Mr Hussain was of the view that opposition political and religious parties were using the issue of CJ for dissolution of the government. “This should be stopped forthwith as solidarity of Pakistan lies in a true democratic government,” he added.A large number of people reached M.A. Jinnah Road to take part in the MQM rally. Mr Hussain, who was sad and grieved over the loss of lives on Saturday, said that no untoward incident had taken place in any part of the city but with the landing of CJ’s flight at Karachi Airport the situation started deteriorating. “After noon when the CJ’s plane landed in Karachi, terrorists started targeting MQM rallies in different areas by firing indiscriminately.” He informed the participants that over a dozen workers of the MQM were targeted while hundreds of workers and supporters were injured. However, he declared that nothing could stop the struggle of the MQM for the rights of the oppressed people. 2010 : MQM retreated on NRO on US, UK pressure KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) took back its support of government for NRO on pressure from the US and Britain, according to a cable leaked by WikiLeaks. According to a US State Department cable released by WikiLeaks, Interior Minister Rehman Malik suspected that the “establishment” was out to get President Asif Zardari and that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was being influenced by the US and the UK. In a meeting held on November 9, 2009, Malik claimed to then US ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson that the MQM had repeatedly stated that both the US and the UK had urged the party to oppose the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO)  a move that led the government to withdraw the legislation from parliamentary consideration and placed the future of Zardari at risk. In a November 9 meeting with Ambassador Patterson, Interior Minister Rehman Malik requested that the USG (United States government) issue a public statement in support of Pakistani democracy.  

He suggested that such a statement would be useful in protecting President Asif Ali Zardari from military-induced pressure for Zardari to leave office. In addition, it would help dispel persistent charges from the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) that the United States and the United Kingdom had urged it to withdraw support for the National Reconciliation Ordinance, thereby placing Zardari at risk. Malik assessed that Saudi Arabia and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) were cooperating with the military and MQM to bring down President Zardari. Despite these charges, Malik was optimistic that the Supreme Court would not/not strip Zardari of his presidential immunity and suggested that even if it did, the government would simply cease prosecution of Zardari`s cases, thereby allowing him to continue to hold office. Interior Minister Rehman Malik met on November 9 with Ambassador Patterson to provide a read-out of his meetings with senior officials of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) in Dubai. Throughout the meeting, Malik was clearly nervous that the USG was distancing itself both from him and President Zardari. Malik claimed that during the course of his Dubai meetings, the MQM had repeatedly stated that both the United States and the United Kingdom had urged the party to oppose the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) — a move that led the government to withdraw the legislation from parliamentary consideration and placed the future of President Zardari at risk. Malik claimed that the MQM stated it had received this message during the Sindh Governor`s recent trip to the United States and that Altaf Hussain had been approached by the British government in London. 

Ambassador strongly denied these allegations, stating that the USG had not/not had any such discussions with the Sindh Governor. Minister Malik inquired as to whether the Ambassador was aware that the “establishment” — local short-hand for the military and the intelligence services — was involved in working against the NRO and for President Zardari`s departure. Ambassador told Rehman that we were aware of such allegations. Minister Malik reported that the MQM had told him directly in the Dubai meetings that the military was involved, although Malik personally did not/not believe that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani was involved in the plotting. Malik also claimed that the MQM was meeting regularly with the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and that PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif was, in turn, pressuring Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to disqualify President Zardari. Malik also assessed that Saudi Arabia was working to unseat President Zardari. Malik intended to visit Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz, Chief of Saudi General Intelligence, in Saudi Arabia and then travel on to London to meet with MQM Convener Altaf Hussain. Malik suggested that the best way to deal with military pressure would be for President Zardari to make internal changes within the military hierarchy. Malik proposed that Zardari recreate the Deputy Chief of Army Staff position and move Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Ahmad Shuja Pasha into that position in March 2010. Zardari could then commit to elevating Pasha to COAS in October 2010 on the expiration of Kayani`s term. Malik suggested that Kayani could then be moved to Chairman of the Joint Staff. Comment: Malik seemed to believe that ISI DG Pasha was unilaterally behind the push to oust Zardari — which we know is not/not the case. Despite these concerns, Malik reiterated the government`s line that Zardari is not in any real danger on expiration of the NRO. He asserted that the Chief Justice would not/not revoke Zardari`s presidential immunity. Even if he did, Malik claimed that the Interior Minister can instruct prosecutors to dismiss charges in any court case. He shared that, in one of his own corruption cases, this had been done, and that in another case, the Supreme Court had ruled his imprisonment illegal. Malik also added that President Zardari had the ability to pardon anyone. Malik pressed the Ambassador for issuance of a strong statement from the United States. Ambassador inquired as to the content and the audience. Malik suggested that it be a public statement saying that the United States supported democracy in Pakistan. Malik was clearly worried that President Zardari and his inner circle of advisors — including Malik — had lost the support of the international community. Malik appeared to believe that such support was essential for their survival in the face of military plotting against them. Malik`s view that ISI DG Pasha is behind the moves against President Zardari and that COAS Kayani is not involved is either naive or intentionally misleading. It would be impossible for Pasha to move without Kayani`s acquiescence. Malik`s views on Zardari`s legal troubles presuppose that Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry will be bound by normal interpretations of the law and precedent. Such an assumption ignores Chaudhry`s penchant for ignoring both in recent rulings and his personal animosity towards Asif Ali Zardari.
