MQM-PTI Ideological Partnership

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday indicated that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and coalition partners Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) could contest the next elections as allies. "It seems that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf could join hands with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in the next elections," said the premier during his speech in Islamabad at the stone laying ceremony of Hyderabad University. The prime minister said that the PTI and MQM-P have similar ideologies. "I always used to think that MQM's viewpoint — the things that they spoke of — was closely aligned with that of PTI," he said. "Our only problem was that of militancy which we both thought was wrong." LAHORE, May 14: Tehreek-i-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan has accused President Pervez Musharraf and MQM leader Altaf Husain of bloodshed in Karachi and called upon the opposition to unite on one-point agenda of getting rid of Musharraf and dictatorship. Addressing a press conference after presiding over a meeting of the Tehreek central executive committee here on Monday evening, he said the disturbance in Karachi was not unexpected because the issue had been raised in the National Assembly session only a day earlier, but the government did nothing to prevent the bloodshed. “Instead of taking steps for maintaining law and order in Karachi, it got the MQM rally arranged intentionally to sabotage the reception of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry which was expected to be much better than Lahore.” He said President Musharraf was not tired of talking about enlightened moderation on the one hand and had joined hands with “top terrorist” MQM leader Altaf Hussain on the other for remaining in power. “The hardened criminals of MQM set at liberty by the government continued firing bullets at the people but the police and the Rangers did not fire even a single teargas shell at them. Ten PTI men were among those who sustained bullet injuries and were under treatment in hospitals.” The PTI, he said, was consulting lawyers to lodge an FIR against Gen Pervez Musharraf and Altaf Husain for the Karachi killings. KARACHI, May 26: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has announced that it will collect evidence about the “bad character” of Imran Khan and will submit it in the National Assembly for getting him unseated as MNA under Articles 62 & 63 of the Constitution. “We will also take every possible legal action if needed to unseat Mr Khan from the National Assembly,” MQM MNA Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi told a crowded news conference at the Karachi Press Club on Saturday. He was accompanied by Dr Farooq Sattar, Anwar Alam, Faisal Sabzwari and other MNAs, MPAs, and members of the MQM coordination committee. The press conference was part of a series of briefings being held by the MQM leadership to counter the allegations levelled by Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan and his threat to file a case against British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the United Kingdom for giving political asylum to MQM leader Altaf Husain who, according to Mr Khan, heads a fascist organisation. Mr Khan in his press briefings and statements has held President Pervez Musharraf and Altaf Hussain responsible for the May 12 bloodbath in Karachi. Mr Rizvi said the MQM was collecting evidence against Imran Khan and it would take all possible legal and constitutional steps to have him unseated from the National Assembly. He said the MQM always welcomed criticism on party policies or difference of opinion on principles but the character assassination of his leader could not be tolerated. Faisal Sabzwari disclosed that the MQM members in the Sindh Assembly would move a resolution condemning Imran Khan for character assassination of Altaf Hussain. “We will not only move a resolution in the provincial assembly but will expose Imran Khan at every forum. He had destroyed the career in cricket of many youths belonging to Karachi and people had not forgotten it,” he added. ISLAMABAD: After years of political animosity, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Altaf Hussain’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) appear to be coming closer as the two leaders held their first telephonic conversation and exchanged good will with each other. In a rare move, Imran Khan called Altaf Hussain on Saturday and appreciated the ‘bold’ stance taken by the latter on national issues, separate but identical statements issued by media offices of both the parties said. The two leaders agreed to bury their past differences and vowed to work together for the betterment of the country, the statements added. PTI and MQM have been considered staunch rivals in the past, at times holding public rallies and resorting to personal attacks against each other’s leadership. Recently, however, the two parties have come closer, mainly due to back-channel efforts by some common friends and political leaders in Pakistan, observers say. The second-tier leadership of the two parties prepared the ground that culminated in direct interaction between their leaders. During their conversation, both sides discussed common agenda points and vowed to work together to achieve their goals. Altaf Hussain has recently started taking a tough stance in public, on issues like unabated US predator attacks inside Pakistani territory, release of CIA contractor Raymond Davis and Dr Aafia Siddiqui. The same issues take centre-stage in Imran Khan, and several right-wing parties’, political agendas. Published in The Express Tribune, March 20th, 2011. Addressing a function organised by the Islamabad Bar Association, Imran Khan termed MQM a terrorist organisation and said it had never been a political party but was a group of ‘goondas’ prospering under the patronage of a dictator. On May 12, he said, the MQM has crossed all limits of terrorism in Karachi and killed innocent people with impunity. He said that Altaf Hussain was being sheltered by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who had killed Muslims in the name of war on terrorism. Criticising the government’s unwise policies, he said while inflation soared, about Rs8 billion to Rs9 billion were being utilised for the construction of the new GHQ and millions of rupees were spent by the government to stage a rally in Islamabad.—Online Case to be filed against Altaf: Imran May 20, 2007 https://www.dawn.com/news/247885

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement said on Sunday the whole nation knew as to who was providing funds to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. Commenting on Mr Khan’s remarks earlier in the day that the MQM should approach a court of law against the BBC which had reported that the MQM had allegedly got money from the Indian government, the coordination committee of the MQM said it was for the MQM to decide and not Mr Khan whether to sue the BBC. It said that Mr Khan needed the people of Karachi only for fundraising or at the time of election, as he never tried to know the problems of Karachiites. Published in Dawn, July 6th, 2015 MQM’s rejoinder to Imran https://www.dawn.com/news/1192639 Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has called for the setting up of a technocratic government in the country for a period of two years, DawnNews reported. The demand came as the MQM chief expressed his concern over the present political crisis during a meeting with Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar in London. The statement comes amid rumours that differences have developed between Sharif brothers and Sarwar over governance issues and that the latter is planning to resign. Sarwar has denied the rumours saying there was no truth in reports that he was going to resign upon his return from London. Hussain also emphasised on what he believes as the need to divide the province of Sindh into several administrative units. He had earlier suggested that new provinces be created in all existing provinces of the country, including Sindh. Technocrats should govern country for two years: Altaf Hussain https://www.dawn.com/news/1133794 Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has sought formation of a technocrat government for two years, without derailing democracy, for “ruthless accountability” of those involved in looting and plundering the country. “If any of my brothers, sisters or relatives is found guilty they should not be spared. No leniency should be shown towards them,” he told reporters in London late on Monday night after meeting Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar. According to an MQM press release issued on Tuesday, Mr Hussain praised Governor Sarwar and went on to say that he should be made prime minister in the technocrat government. “In my opinion, Chaudhry Sarwar is the only person in Pakistan who has the courage to speak truth.” The MQM chief said he did not support a demand by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek for the resignation of the prime minister. “Nawaz Sharif enjoys a two-thirds majority in parliament. If some people think that elections were rigged, an inquiry should be carried out to satisfy both sides. We can solve matters through dialogue,” he added. PESHAWAR, Sept 7: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has said that whether President Gen Pervez Musharraf remains in uniform or decides to doff it is a secondary issue because every government in Pakistan has sought protection of the military uniform. Speaking at the Peshawar Press Club's 'Meet the Press' programme here on Tuesday, he said the issue of uniform would be there as long as a people's government was not established in the country. Every ruler in the past had sought the help of the 'uniform' and compromised on principles, he added. He said that former prime ministers, including Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, had formed their governments with the help of the 'uniform'. The Jamaat-i-Islami supported Gen Ziaul Haq, who also was in uniform, for 11 long years, but now JI chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed was opposing a president in uniform to hoodwink the nation. Musharraf's uniform a secondary issue: Altaf September 08, 2004 https://www.dawn.com/news/369907 WASHINGTON, Aug 9: Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar has urged opposition parties to stop forcing the president to divest his uniform. He was speaking at a gathering in Washington on the party’s 25th anniversary. The MQM’s leader said the present system was not ideal but “even an incomplete and moth-eaten democracy was better than no democracy.” He also urged the opposition parties not to waste their energies on the demand for abolishing the Legal Framework Order because “even removing the LFO will not ensure that there will be no threat to democracy in the future.” Dr Sattar said that in 1999, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had already removed the Eighth Amendment, becoming the most powerful prime minister in Pakistan’s history. “But in less than 10 months after he removed the Eighth amendment, the parliament was dismissed and Mr Sharif was sacked.” “LFO or no LFO, uniform or no uniform,” said Mr. Sattar, “democracy will remain weak so long as democratic institutions are not strengthened.” Mr Sattar said that the same religious leaders “saw no harm in accepting, even kissing, Gen Zia’s uniform. Then why this aversion to Musharraf’s uniform? If you believe in a principle, apply it equally to all.” “You cannot say that the LFO is OK for participating in elections, even for filing your nomination papers for the prime minister’s post, as Maulana Fazlur Rahman did. But when that process is over, it should be thrown out,” he added. Mr Sattar urged Pakistan’s religious parties to stop doing new “experiments with the country every day. In the present international scenario, the country cannot afford such experiments.” The MQM leader said that in a country where “prime ministers are tailored to meet the needs of the establishment and parliaments are made on order, you cannot have political stability.” He suggested three basic changes for bringing stability to the country: a consistent and sustainable fiscal development policy, constitutional and political reforms and devolution of power and resources. Mr Sattar said that unless the federation’s powers were decentralized and resources distributed equally, there would be no justice and no stability. He said the government took “a 180-degree somersault” when it dumped the Taliban after the 9-11 incident. “A similar decision is now needed to ban jihadi activities at home,” he added. The MQM leader also urged the government to resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully because unless it is resolved “we will continue to waste our precious resources on unproductive activities.” MQM backs Musharraf on LFO, uniform August 10, 2003 https://www.dawn.com/news/134480

Curious Case of PTI/MQM Joint Leader Minister Farogh Naseem and 12 May 2007 Massacre in Karachi

Mr Imran Khan Explaining the Similarities between PTI and MQM (Geo TV 2007)

MQM, Altaf Hussain and Mehran Bank Scandal

Islamabad: At a time when Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) formed a new team to record statements of two retired generals in Mehran Bank Scam (Asghar Khan case), Yousaf Memon Advocate made startling revelations about Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) which, according to him, was sponsored by the then Chief of Army Staff General Mirza Aslam Beg. In his statement, Yousaf Memon, who is cousin of MQM Pakistan chief Farooq Sattar, claimed that he came close to Younis Habib, key character in Asghar Khan case, in 1988-89, when he was zonal chief of HBL, Karachi. “He [Younis Habib] called me to deliver a message to Altaf Hussain from [General] Aslam Beg. I was actively involved in MQM and politics by that time as Farooq Sattar was my nephew. He said that General Aslam Beg wanted to meet Altaf Hussain,” Yousaf Memon revealed in his statement recorded by FIA which is all set to summon General (R) Aslam Beg and Lt General (R) Asad Durrani — two key accused in this case who doled out state money among politicians to pollute 1990 elections in Pakistan -- this week. The Supreme Court directed federal government to ensure implementation of the verdict of this case within a week, even though Premier Abbasi can summon cabinet meeting to decide next course of action against the accused. Yousaf Memon, who later joined Pakistan People’s Party, further revealed, “First such meeting [between Altaf Hussain and General Beg] was arranged at central avenue DHA [Karachi]. After courtesies were exchanged the discussion started on political scenario and it was discussed that then prime minister Benazir Bhutto was not running government property. In this regard they had planned a no-confidence motion against Benazir Bhutto government in National Assembly. It was decided that Younis Habib would provide funds for Altaf Hussain/MOM for their support in vote of no confidence. Altaf Hussain said that he needed transportation for his party. In this regard 20 Mehran vehicles and 1 Cultus were bought for MQM.” Afterwards second meeting was held at another house after 15-20 days, Yousaf Memon told FIA investigator. “During this meeting it was decided as to which steps would be taken once no confidence motion was successful. It was I who had brought Nawaz Sharif from Punjab House for the meeting. A final agreement was also signed. In order to keep a proof of this, Altaf Hussain had got the ceremony photographed and kept the two rolls with him. During this meeting asking prime minister Benazir Bhutto to get a vote of confidence was also discussed. President Ghulam lshaq Khan was contacted and it was decided that no confidence motion would be the option chosen. It was I who had typed the text of no confidence motion,” Yousaf Memon continued to reveal. Yousaf Memon, on directions of General Durrani, is accused of distribution Rs70 million among politicians. Yousaf Memon further told FIA that “MNAs present there signed the document and it was introduced in lower house of Parliament. A lot of horse trading was done but eventually the motion was defeated. During this whole process, Nawaz Sharif got wiser and he had realised that if the government did eventually fall, it would be Mustafa Jataoi who would become the prime minister and not he.” He further got recorded in his statement that during this process Altaf Hussain became jittery and tried to contact President lshaq Khan on telephone but the President did not talk to him and Colonel Ajaib, secretary to President, said that the President was asleep. After this General Beg was contacted who advised Altaf Hussain to leave Pakistan and stay in UK, where his stay would be made comfortable. “We were taken in British Airways fight and Saleem Wahidi travelled with us as our escort. He was in 1" class and we were in club class but he also sat with us for some time during the flight. Afterwards immigration was done in UK and a Pakistani High Commission vehicle (Mercedes 500 SEL) was there to receive us.” Yousaf Memon further revealed that they stayed in hotels and it was decided that they must agitate against the Pakistani government and it was suggested that they should either contact Saarc countries or OIC countries. It was upon this issue that differences arose between MQM leadership and him as leadership was in contact with India and therefore, he left UK. “I returned and I was directed to mark my attendance," daily in Nine Zero, the MOM HQ till Altaf Hussain returns. On August 22, Altaf Hussain returned and told that date he complied with the orders given to him. It was during this period that MOM (Haqeeqi) was created. He said that he fought elections against MOM and lost. Later on he joined Pakistan People's Party. He had best of relations with Younis Habib since that time and Rafiq Moon was their common friend he had a working relationship for distribution of funds 1989-90. “I knew during this time that these funds would be used during elections and I was also getting benefit from this activity as I was getting close to General Beg.” Yousaf Memon further said in his statement, “I knew at that time because of my law background that army chief could not enter political activity as per the constitution of Pakistan. I knew about existence of article 6 and its implications as I was a lawyer. I knew that army chief was indulging in political activities. I knew that I was becoming part of the activity and that it was unconstitutional. I also knew the consequences. My motivation was politics and not financial. I was getting close to leadership of the country and I expected this relationship to benefit me in later years as I could have become member of Senate etc. After assembly was dissolved, money started flowing through various accounts. Whenever money was put into some bank account I used to visit Islamabad and used to hand over the receipts to General Beg. My motivation was politics and not monetary as I have already mentioned.” He further revealed, “I was tasked to give money to Javed Hashmi. In the first step I invested Rs187 lacs with him in Cotton Ginning industry. It was my personal money. Later on, a meeting was arranged with Javed Hashmi, once General Beg and Nawaz Sharif had fallen apart over "doctrine of strategic defiance." Army wanted to have a pressure group in the National Assembly. I met General Beg and Younis Habib who gave me a task to take over Javed Hashmi. During this meeting Javed Hashmi also asked for making of a house as he needed to have a place with proper "drawing room" for getting people together and also asked for making funds available for alluring the politicians. Rs149 lacs were given to him for the purpose. He took this information to Shahbaz Sharif who took him to Nawaz Sharif. Upon getting the whole information, prime minister confronted General Aslam Beg.” Reference: Yousaf Memon accuses Gen Beg of sponsoring MQM May 16, 2018 https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/317305-yousaf-memon-accuses-gen-beg-of-sponsoring-mqm by Zahid Gishkori . General Election 2018 in Pakistan (Tehran Times)

‘Political transition may be smooth but Imran Khan won’t be able to run the country smoothly’ By: Syed Zafar Mehdi July 29, 2018 http://www.tehrantimes.com/news/425917/Political-transition-may-be-smooth-but-Imran-Khan-won-t-be-able

Q. Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan claimed victory in general election on Thursday amid accusations of rigging and manipulation by rivals. Are other parties being ungraceful in defeat or do they have legitimate grievances?

A: Yes, and it is premature to say anything else because situation is very fluid. The very exercise of elections stands highly doubtful and irregularities are not only reported by national but international media as well.

Q. As you mentioned, there are reports about irregularities. PML-N, the main rival of PTI in this election, has rejected the result claiming rigging. What options do they have now?

A: PML-N is in strong position because Nawaz Sharif and Maryam are back in the country and they have proved everyone wrong, Nawaz Sharif’s narrative is intact and trending as anyone can see in print and electronic media as well as social media. Imran Khan’s very victory is tainted.

Q. As alleged by PML-N, PPP and other smaller parties prior to the election, all the parties were not given a level playing field and PTI was favored over others. Do you think Imran Khan's turnaround in fortunes is largely because of military establishment's blessings?

A: Yes, writing is on the wall and widely reported and even a child can tell that polls were highly mismanaged, rather engineered.

Q. Since most of the parties have rejected the result, do you think the transition of power will be smooth and the new government will be stable?

A: Transition may or may not be smooth but Imran Khan won’t be able to run the country smoothly. He doesn’t have committed ‘original PTI’ with him. He now has the turncoats of every party in the shape of electable and electable are basically carpetbaggers. Imran Khan has lost the moral high ground.

Q. While Khan is considered a non-corrupt and honest politician, he is seen close to army and to the Taliban. Is Pakistan ready for a leader like him?

A: Question is how do you define ‘corruption’? In my opinion intellectual dishonesty is more harmful than financial corruption and Pakistan has suffered due to this intellectual corruption in the last 60 years, particularly judiciary’s intellectual dishonesty.

Q. What are the major challenges in front of the new government?

A: FATF, Pakistan’s International Image, Completion of CPEC and distribution of proper dividends amongst provinces, NFC Award, Missing Persons, Freedom of Expression and last and the most important “complete eradication of decimation of sectarian groups from Punjab, Baluchistan and Upper Sindh. Sectarian organisations are clear and present danger.

Q. Now that PML-N has failed to retain power, do you think Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Sharif have to spend more time in jail than they would have expected?

A: I won’t say that Sharif family is innocent but the trial was also not fair and media was allowed to influence during proceedings. Corruption cases and the way these cases are manipulated and tried in Pakistan is itself a joke, we all know how Musharraf inducted those who were Bank defaulters and thoroughly corrupt and facing NAB enquiries. Therefore, such cases in Pakistan carry no weight.

Q. If Imran Khan becomes the next PM, what would be the focus of his foreign policy, especially vis a vis relations with neighbors India and Afghanistan and America's shadow over Pakistan.

A: It would be a disaster. He or his team has no idea what to do. Imran Khan is totally clueless and amateur as a political leader.

Attack on Ahsan Iqbal and Playing with Fire in Punjab

One major political party also chose to exploit the issue and continued to do so at both the constituency and national level, ignoring the counsel of several commentators that this was akin to playing with dynamite. You can start this fire but when it gets raging you cannot extinguish its flames. If there is one thing that we seem to be utterly committed to, it is to never learn from history. And our own recent history in particular. Whatever the justification, the policy of nurturing religious militancy has cost us dearly. The images of our brave martyrs, uniformed or otherwise, and their loved ones are a slap-in-the-face reminder if one was indeed needed. All contestants must know that while stoking divisive flames, religious, sectarian or ethnic, may well bring them gains, the temporary advantage of following such a path will lead to hellish consequences. Abrar-ul-Haq and Imran Khan want us to respect these Rogue and Vagabond Clerics - 1

However, one man who has humiliated himself in this tragic situation is Ahsan Iqbal’s opponent from the Narowal district, Abrar ul-Haq, the musician-turned politician and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader. In a bizarre attempt to use this attack on one of the most senior and dignified statesmen in the country for point scoring, Abrar ul-Haq offered the minister treatment at his Sahara hospital in Narowal in a tweet as distasteful as it could get. This wasn’t all. Abrar while talking to a TV channel in the aftermath of the attack resorted even to veiled threats to the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, saying that the people had been calling him and justifying the attack, and then told the PML-N leaders to stay cautious. It isn’t the first time that Abrar ul-Haq has explicitly tried to woo the extremist right-wing vote-bank. In November 2017, when a number of Labbaik goons had surrounded Ahsan Iqbal’s house in Narowal and in turn had been baton-charged by the police, Abrar in a video message had not only justified the vandalism of the Labbaik activists but had gone on to issue sermons for the PML-N leadership, especially naming Ahsan Iqbal, saying the party leaders were ruining their afterlife. Abrar-ul-Haq and Imran Khan want us to respect these Rogue and Vagabond Clerics - 2

The point here is simple: a young man, semi-schooled, indoctrinated, who can’t find employment but can become the president of the youth wing of TLYRA and can come up with Rs. 15,000 for a pistol and Rs. 1,800 for purchasing 50 rounds for his weapon. Pakistan’s history, post-1979, is a testimony to the fact that ‘blasphemy’ is a nuclear option. Unfortunately, almost all major political parties have resorted to it for petty politicking. None seems to realize that starting this fire will engulf everyone. It has also been hyped by unscrupulous charlatans and televangelists. This has reached a point where any semi-schooled man looking for a place in Jannah can take it upon himself to kill whoever he deems to have presumably insulted Islam’s Prophet. But more than that, it is, to quote Mencken, the grotesqueries, chicaneries and theological buffooneries practiced by unethical clerics and large segments of their cretinous followers that is the problem. Perish the thought that others will condemn this act by Abid Hussain. As I write this, there will be many who would be preparing themselves for performing what they think is a sacred task. The accused told the police he was asked by Data Sahib to kill minister Iqbal. According to him he also saw other holy personages in his dream. There, we now have a good test case for psychologists and their Jungian mishmash. Incidentally, the accused also went to Dubai but returned after a month because he didn’t like the “mahol” (environment) there. So, here we have some initial observations. Let’s hope we draw the right lessons from them. 1. (C) Summary: While politicians and religious leaders have sought to establish inter-religious peace in Gojra village after the August 1 burning of eight Christians, human rights activists have urged the government to reconsider the blasphemy law, which sparked the killing of a Muslim businessman in Sheikhupura August 4. In an August 6 meeting with A/PO, members of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan warned that the government must punish the perpetrators, and suggested modifying the blasphemy law that allows such incidents to occur. Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the imam of Lahore's Badshahi Mosque, related that he spent the week in Gojra encouraging interfaith reconciliation. He underscored that extremist Brelvi group Sunni Tehreek first sparked the riot, though an Ahl-e-Hadith mosque encouraged the violence. End Summary. Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad says that Supporters of Mumtaz Qadri (Salmaan Taseer's Killer) would vote for Imran Khan

The US gave money to a Pakistani Muslim group that organised anti-Taliban rallies, but which later demonstrated in support of an extremist who killed a leading liberal politician, the US Embassy in Pakistan said Wednesday. US government website Usaspending.gov shows that the group, the Sunni Ittehad Council, received $36,607 from Washington in 2009. A US diplomat said that the embassy had given money to the group to organise the rallies, but that it had since changed direction and leadership. He said it was a one-off grant, and wouldn't be repeated. He didn't give his name because he wasn't authorised to speak about the issue on the record. The grant was first reported by the Council of Foreign Relations on its website. The Ittehad council was formed in 2009 to counter extremism. It groups politicians and clerics from Pakistan's traditionalist Barelvi Muslim movement, often referred to as theological moderates in the Pakistani context. The American money was used to organise nationwide rallies against militants and suicide bombings, the embassy official said. The demonstrations received widespread media coverage, and were some of the first against extremism in the country. The rhetoric at the rallies was mostly focused on opposing militant attacks on shrines, which Barelvis frequent but are opposed by Deobandi Muslims, Pakistan's other main Muslim sect. In 2011 and also this month, however, the council led demonstrations in support of the killer of Salman Taseer, a governor who was killed a year ago for his criticism of anti-blasphemy laws. The displays have appalled Pakistani liberals and stoked international fears that the country is buckling under the weight of extremism. Taseer's assassin, Mumtaz Qadri, is a Barelvi. He claimed he acted to defend the honour of Prophet Mohammed. Reference: US aided Pakistan group which supported extremists January 11, 2012 https://www.dawn.com/news/687293

Meet Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad and his Sectarian Friends - 2

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad is a Friend of Sectarian Terrorist Malik Ishaq

1. (S) Summary: A well-placed Deobandi religious leader told Principal Officer in a meeting on March 18 that extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP) was increasing its activities in the central Punjab city of Faisalabad, the province's second largest, in collaboration with elements of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and a splinter group from the banned terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The cleric reported that SSP had recently launched a pamphlet campaign across the city in which it called for people to take steps to enforce Islamic law including: (1) cease business and social activities at the five daily calls to prayer, (2) remove all sources of ""vulgarity"" such as televisions, cd players, and radios from their homes, (3) seek dispute resolution through local imams rather than the courts, (4) take Friday rather than Sunday as the weekly holiday, and (4) strictly enforce purdah for female family members. The pamphlet states that it comes from SSP with support from the TTP and specifically praises ""the enforcement of Sharia in Swat"" and recommends it as a model for Faisalabad. Moral of the Story: In simpler terms, in Ahmad Raza’s endeavours, we see Islam entwined with the local cultural moorings evolving through the historical process. What Ahmad Raza failed to guard against was the exclusion and takfir. In his famous fatwa Husam al-Haramain ala Manhar al-Kufr wa’l Main (The Sword of the Haramain at the Throat of Kufr and Falsehood), which was written in 1902 but became public in 1906, Ahmed Raza denounced several individuals in the early twentieth-century India. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian was the first on Ahmad Raza’s lists of kafirs (infidels). He was followed by some eminent Ulema from Deoband denomination like Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, Ashraf Ali Thanvi and Khalil Ahmad Ambethwi whom he described as Wahabis. Among the twelver Shias and the organisation of the Ulema known as the Nadwat al-Ulama, he accused some specific people of kufr. This is the situation right now when two Barelvi factions are trading fatwas, calling each other kafir. One shudders to think about the prevalent situation invested with the possible likelihood of sub-sectarian violence among the Sunnis. Accursed Parliament of Pakistan and Blessed Sham Referendum

The joint opposition’s gathering to seek ouster of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government ended abruptly on Wednesday after Sheikh Rashid’s repeated cursing of parliament and announcement of resignation from his National Assembly seat prompted Imran Khan to consider quitting the assemblies on the grounds that parliament had lost its utility in protecting people’s rights. (Lahore rally yields no concrete plan to oust Sharif's Dawn Ahmad Fraz Khan January 18, 2018) In an unusual turn of events, lawmakers in the National Assembly adopted a resolution on Thursday slamming two of their own colleagues — Imran Khan and Sheikh Rashid Ahmad — for cursing parliament during Wednesday’s protest in Lahore. But at a press conference held shortly afterwards, a defiant Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief brushed aside the criticism and doubled down on his remarks, saying he didn’t care if the assembly passed a hundred resolutions against him. (NA slams Imran, Rashid for ‘cursing parliament’ (Dawn Amir Wasim | Iftikhar A. Imran Khan justified his slur in a couple of tweets on micro-blogging website, Twitter, saying, “When a Parliament, which must protect nation's interests, passes a person-specific law allowing a disqualified person guilty of Rs 3 bn money laundering, tax evasion, concealment of assets, forgery & perjury to become head of a political party, then such a law is a "laanath" on Parliament.” Reference: (Imran Khan justifies ‘lanat’ to Parliament January 18, 2018 By Samaa)

How USA Backed Military Dictator General Ziaul Haq Ruined Pakistani Politics

“What is the Constitution? It is a booklet with ten or twelve pages. I can tear them up and say that from tomorrow, we shall live under a different system. Is there anybody to stop me? Today the people will follow wherever I lead. All the politicians, including the once mighty Mr Bhutto, will follow me with their tails wagging.” — General Ziaul Haq: Reported by Iranian publication, Kayhan International, on September 18, 1977. Reference: (A leaf from history: Furious Zia gets Bhutto re-arrested by Shaikh Aziz June 15, 2014 Dawn)

He also condemned the statements of Benazir Bhutto whose recent remarks were solely directed to undermine Pakistan’s interest only to seek the blessings of her foreign masters in her quest for power. (Imran flays Bush for pressurizing Pakistan - Dawn June 01, 2002) While commenting after a huge bomb blast in PPP rally resulted in numbers of casualty , the Einstein aka Imran Khan had to say this "I'm sorry to say this, but the bombing of Benazir Bhutto's cavalcade as she paraded through Karachi on Thursday night was a tragedy almost waiting to happen. You could argue it was inevitable.Everyone here knew there was going to be a huge crowd turning up to see her return after eight years in self-imposed exile. Everyone also knows that there has been a spate of suicide bombings in Pakistan lately, especially in the frontier region where I am campaigning at the moment. How was it ever going to be possible to monitor such a large crowd and guarantee that no suicide bombers would infiltrate it? This may sound equally harsh, but she has only herself to blame. By making a deal with Musharraf's government — a deal brokered by the British as well as the Americans, by the way — she was hoping to get herself off the corruption charges that have been levelled against her. Imran Khan on Gentleman Musharraf and Accursed Parliament

Imran Khan while condemning Benazir Bhutto for being Pro American had almost declared her traitor whereas he himself backed, voted and campaigned for US backed General Pervez Musharraf's sham and fraudulent referendum in 2002  ----> Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf, Awami National Party and Millat Party leaders are likely to meet the president in the next couple of days to extend their support, the sources said. Thus, while the pro-Musharraf parties, i.e. PML-QA, Tahirul Qadri’s PAT, Farooq Leghari’s Millat Party, the ANP, and Imran Khan’s PTI have already given their consent to the referendum proposal, the opposition parties have expressed their dissent against it. (Dawn Opposition parties may boycott referendum March 22, 2002) Information Minister Nisar Memon said on Tuesday that turnout in the referendum was “beyond our expectations” as silent majority had come out to cast its votes. He told a press conference that in the last general election only 16 per cent votes had been polled which was interpreted as heavy mandate. He said that was the minimum target they had in mind. But, he pointed out, the turnout in referendum was at least double of the votes polled in the last general election. (Nisar terms response beyond expectations - Dawn May 01, 2002) Information Minister Nisar Memon on Wednesday dismissed the coverage of referendum by national press and international news agencies, describing the reports of low turnout and irregularities as “inaccurate and exaggerated”. The minister told a news conference that he had gone through the newspapers and often wondered about the decline in the objectivity. He also rejected the reports of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and other independent sources. (Nisar unhappy with press coverage - Dawn May 02, 2002)

Imran Khan on Blessed Sham Referendum of Musharraf and Accursed Parliament

Imran Khan and Gang jointly sent curse to the Parliament of Pakistan and conveniently forgot that they had supported this Notoriously sham, rigged, fraudulent referendum of General Pervez Musharraf and that too after the start of US War on Terror ------>  PAKISTANIS vote in a referendum today on extending Gen Pervaiz Musharraf's term as president for five years, but opposition is growing to the continuation of what many see as undiluted military rule. Gen Musharraf, who has mobilised the army, the intelligence services, the bureaucracy and industrialists to ensure a solid turnout for a Yes vote, is likely to win easily. But his credibility among voters has fallen sharply after his announcement last month that he would not share power with a civilian prime minister after elections scheduled to be held in October. Pakistan's major opposition parties started their anti-referendum campaign on Saturday with a rally in Lahore called by the Alliance to Restore Democracy. All the large Islamic groups were among the 33 political parties taking part in the rally. They have condemned today's referendum as unconstitutional, urged the public to boycott it and demanded an immediate general election. Reference: Army mobilised to ensure vote for Musharraf By Ahmed Rashid in Lahore 30 Apr 2002) Talking to The News, the head of the ISI’s political cell in 2002, admitted manipulating the last elections at the behest of President Musharraf and termed the defeat of the King’s party, the PML-Q, this time “a reaction of the unnatural dispensation (installed in 2002).” Zamir said the ISI together with the NAB was instrumental in pressing the lawmakers to join the pro-Musharraf camp to form the government to support his stay in power. Looking down back into the memory lane and recalling his blunders which, he admitted, had pushed the country back instead of taking it forward, Zamir feels ashamed of his role and conduct. Massively embarrassed because he was the one who negotiated, coerced and did all the dirty work, the retired Maj-Gen said he was not in a position to become a preacher now when his own past was tainted. He said the country would not have faced such regression had the political management was not carried out by the ISI in 2002. But he also put some responsibility of the political disaster on the PML-Q as well. The former No: 2 of the ISI called for the closure of political cell in the agency, confessing that it was part of the problem due to its involvement in forging unnatural alliances, contrary to public wishes. Imran Khan on GHQ and Musharraf on 100 Seats to Imran Khan

Speaking at ‘Democracy: For the People or in Spite of Them’, a seminar organised by the Awami Workers Party (AWP) at the National Press Club, the former senator used the example to highlight just how incapacitated politicians were in the face of the military. To illustrate his point, Mr Khattak quoted the example of former military ruler, retired General Pervez Musharraf, who had once mentioned that Imran Khan was demanding 100 seats from him, but that he (Musharraf) was only willing to give him 10 seats. “Musharraf is not capable of winning a single seat if he contested the election himself. He negotiated with Imran Khan because he knew the agencies would engineer the elections for him,” he said. Talking about the state of democracy in Pakistan, he said that the system in the country was a “controlled democracy”, adding that a certain group was running the system at the behest of the ‘state’. Imran Khan didn't want Pathological Liar Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad to be even his Peon

LAHORE, May 17: President Pervez Musharraf will seek another term after his current tenure ends in 2007, federal Information Minister Sheikh Rashid told newsmen here on Tuesday. “He (Gen Musharraf) will continue as president even after 2007. However, nothing can be said at this stage whether he will retain his army chief’s office as well,” the minister said. About talks with various political leaders, Sheikh Rashid said the government was engaged in ‘indirect dialogue’ with several leaders, including Ms Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari and Shahbaz Sharif, but not with Nawaz Sharif and Qazi Husain Ahmed. He, however, refused to give reasons why the government did not talk to the MMA president whose alliance was in power in the NWFP and Balochistan. He denied reports that there was any rift in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League. “There is no rift in the PML and Chaudhry Shujaat Husain will continue as its president,” he added. In 1985, he contested elections held during Ziaul Haq’s regime and won a seat in Rawalpindi. He continued winning from that seat on various platforms — from the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and also as an independent — until he finally lost in the 2008 general election by a wide margin to a PML-N candidate. His defeat from NA-55 on a PML-Q platform led him to part ways with the league and launch his own political party, which he called the Awami Muslim League Pakistan (AMLP). Alleged Liberal and Secular PPP Deserve the Company of Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad

In a television programme aired recently, former chief of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and an important leader of Difa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC) General (retd) Hamid Gul cast doubts over the authenticity of a picture run by the website of The Express Tribune. The picture in question was that of Malik Ishaq, commander of the banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), who was shown to be in attendance at the DPC meeting in Multan – a meeting also attended and addressed by General Gul. During a talk show on Aaj TV, host Wajahat S Khan showed Gul the picture on The Express Tribune’s website as evidence of Ishaq’s attendance – in response to which the retired general alleged that the photo had been doctored. When he was further challenged by the show’s host, Gul resorted to questioning the reporter of the story. The Express Tribune takes strong exception to General Gul’s allegations and contends that the picture is authentic. It was taken by our photographer, who was assigned to cover the gathering. In fact, the picture was also run by other newspapers. If Gul has the slightest doubt regarding the authenticity of the photograph, we ask him to take the matter to court. Curious Case of Imran Khan, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman & MKRF

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on Tuesday broke his silence on reports of his plans to marry again in a series of tweets, accusing former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif of being behind the "vicious" campaign. Sharif denied the allegation and said he would not stoop so low. Pakistan’s political circles have been abuzz with speculation about the 65-year-old chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf marrying for a third time after an English daily reported on Saturday that he had married a woman who was his spiritual guide. Khan tweeted, "For 3 days I have been wondering have I looted a bank; or money laundered bns in nation's wealth; or ordered a model-town-like killing spree; or revealed state secrets to India? WASHINGTON, Nov 3: A senior US official responsible for counter-terrorism on Tuesday directly accused Pakistan of supporting training of militant groups in Afghanistan as well as providing "material support" to some of the Kashmiri militants. "There are numerous Kashmiri separatist groups and sectarian groups involved in terrorism which use Pakistan as a base...We have repeatedly asked Islamabad to end support of terrorist training in Afghanistan," Michael Sheehan, State Department's coordinator for counter-terrorism, told a Senate Foreign Relations sub-committee. The sub-committee hearing was called and presided over by Senator Sam Brownback and the list of experts who testified included a former CIA officer in Pakistan Milt Bearden, president of Stimson Centre Michael Krepon, John Hopkins University Central Asia Institute chairman Dr Fredrick Starr and a Pakistani- American businessman and columnist Mansoor Ijaz. Mr Sheehan recently visited India to coordinate US-Indian responses to terrorist threats but when asked whether he would also visit Pakistan soon, he said: "Hopefully." "Pakistan has frequently acknowledged what it calls moral and diplomatic support for militants in Kashmir who employ violence and terrorism against Indian interests. We have continuing reports of Pakistani material support for some of these militants," Mr Sheehan said. He named several Pakistan-based militant Islamic groups including Lashkar Taiba, Harkatul Jehad Islami and Hizbul Mujahideen, which, he said, "operate freely in Pakistan and support terrorist attacks in Kashmir." Asked by Indian and Pakistani journalists after his hearing whether he found any change in the policy after the overthrow of the Nawaz government, Mr Sheehan said: "We are still waiting for their responses and it is too early to judge whether there is any change." When a correspondent pointed out whether it was "business as usual" with the military government, he crisply said "no" but added: "We hope to work with them on all these issues." Initiated by the then army chief Mirza Aslam Beg with the alleged support of President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, payments of up to Rs140 million were made by the then Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director-General Lieutenant-General Asad Durrani and Corps of Engineers Engineer-in-Chief Lieutenant-General Javed Nasir via the owner of Mehran Bank Yunus Habib. Intelligence funds were deposited in Mehran Bank in 1992 propping up what was an insolvent bank as a favour for its owner’s help in loaning money to the Inter-Services Intelligence in 1990 that was used in the creation of the right wing alliance Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and bankrolling the campaigns of many opponents of the PPP. The scandal subsequently broke after the new ISI Director-General Lieutenant-General Javed Ashraf Qazi decided to transfer the intelligence fund back to state-owned banks as per official rules.  PTI Leader Dr Babar Awan on Imran Khan, Sita White Affair and Illegitimate Love Child Tyrian

A U-S court has ruled that cricket star Imran Khan is the father of a five year child. The ruling came from a Los Angeles court after ex-girlfriend Sita White filed a lawsuit claiming Khan's paternity over her daughter Tyrian-Jade.White says Khan should apologise to the Pakistani people for misleading them during his election campaign that he had no children before he married Jemima Goldsmith. A Los Angeles court on Wednesday said Imran Khan wasn't playing cricket and added it was time he owned up to being the father of Tyrian-Jade White. The former Pakistani cricket star has denied fathering the five-year-old American girl with British heiress Sita White who now lives in L-A. But the court went with the daughter of Lord "Gordy" White - and gave Khan the official stamp of father. The ruling came after Khan failed to respond to a paternity suit and a request to take a bloodtest. Reference: A U-S court has ruled that cricket star Imran Khan is the father of a five year child. (Associated Press Archive Date: 08/13/1997)  It is official now: Babar Awan has quietly conceded before the Election Commission through the latest nomination papers for the Senate slot that he is neither a PhD doctor nor had acquired any education from Saudi Arabia, contrary to his past declarations in 2006. Not only he mentioned holding a doctorate degree earned from the fraudulent Monticello University of United States, in previous papers for Senate seat, he continued using the title ‘Dr’ with his name. Even his twitter identity is @DrBabarAwan, not amended to-date. But in latest nomination papers, he is Zaheerud Din Babar only, without the prefix ‘Dr’.

His radical break from the past practice has gone unnoticed even by the PML-N, the main rival party that has not challenged this contradiction in his previous and present nomination papers. The Supreme Court that has directed him to produce educational credentials after suspending his legal practice license seems to have forced him to submit a statement of facts in the nomination paper. As for Babar’s case is concerned, he declared under oath in the 2006 nomination papers, a long list of his qualifications. Babar then disclosed that he did his Matric in Science in 1971 from Board of Sargodha; Intermediate in Humanities from Board of Sargodha in 1973; BA in Arts from the University of Punjab in 1975; Masters in Economics from the University of Punjab in 1978; DAL in Arabic Islamic Law from King Saud University, KSA in 1982; LLB from University of Karachi in 1986; and PhD in Criminal Law from the “Monty Cello University USA” in 1998 session. He also wrote his full name as “Dr. Zaheerud Din Babar Awan.”Awan, interestingly misspelled the fake Monticello university in his nomination papers as “Monty Cello” from where he affirmed to have done his doctorate degree. He claimed to have done his PhD in Criminal Law from “Monty Cello University USA” in 1998. Notwithstanding his declaration of PhD degree in 2006 paper, a photocopy was not submitted unlike other educational certificates annexed with the documents. His DAL from King Saud University was not shown either. Confusion ensues when you mix religious rhetoric with politics & this is the case with Pakistani politicians since Jinnah to the present lot and Imran Khan is no exception , he tries to ride many boats at the same time e.g. he claims to be real heir of Jinnah and Iqbal, Sufi, Mullah, Secular, Liberal, Democrat, Patriot, Leftist, Progressive etc.etc and all this ends up in confusion. Yesterday, he participated in Finality of Prophet-hood Conference in Golra Punjab to strengthen his vote religious bank particularly the Barelvi votes in Punjab but browse his last 10 years interviews which he gave to the international media on Religious Extremism, Misuse of Blasphemy Law, Murder of Salmaan Taseer, Basic Human Rights for the Marginalized Communities in Pakistan, Religious Persecution in Pakistan, Terrorism and Taliban , and his every interview create more confusion and problem then solving the existing one (evident in the 3 video clips below). If Imran Khan wasn't enough, we also have the worst kind of time serves and opportunists i.e. Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) whose center of attention is Punjab and Punjab alone and they are least bothered that their footsie with Mullahs will not only ruin Punjab but shake the very foundations of Pakistan because core of Religious Extremists is based in Punjab and so far no long term action is taken against them.

XXXXXXXXXXXX claimed that in the last month he has observed a dramatic increase in propaganda activities from Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). He believed that this increase coincided with a number of visits to Faisalabad from activists both of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and a splinter group from the southern Punjab-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM). XXXXXXXXXXXX believed that the activists were involved in recruiting for TTP militant operations in the FATA and NWFP through madrassas in southern Punjab and hoped to replicate that success in Faisalabad. XXXXXXXXXXXX noted that SSP leaders had long-standing ties with JeM, as both were Deobandi organizations that had collaborated in the past in anti-Shia and anti-India activities. XXXXXXXXXXXX shared with Principal Officer an Urdu-language sticker that he claimed he had confiscated from several of his madrassa students in Faisalabad. The sticker, which he stated was also being printed and distributed as a pamphlet, praised the implementation of Sharia law in Swat and exhorted Muslims to pursue the same sort of Sharia law in Faisalabad. It then recounted five steps that every Faisalabad based Muslim should take to begin the process of implementation in the district. The steps were: : (1) cease business and social activities at the five daily calls to prayer, (2) remove all sources of ""vulgarity"" such as televisions, cd players, and radios from their homes, (3) seek dispute resolution through local imams rather than the courts, (4) take Friday rather than Sunday as the weekly holiday, and (4) strictly enforce purdah for female family members. Maulana XXXXXXXXXXXX shared that he had received reliable information that SSP leader Maulana Ludhianvi was on a fundraising trip to Tripoli sponsored by the Libyan government. XXXXXXXXXXXX claimed that Ludhianvi had made contact with Libyan officials in the guise of working against Iran and Shia agents in Pakistan. (Note: SSP was originally founded as a violent anti-Shia organization and has, in the past, received extensive foreign funding from a variety of Sunni states, including Saudi Arabia. End Note). According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, Ludhianvi was scheduled to return to Pakistan in ""a few days"" and was bringing with him a ""donation"" from the Libyan government valued at nearly 25 million Pakistani rupees (approximately $312,000) that XXXXXXXXXXXX was certain would be used to increase further SSP activities. Chaudhry Nisar admits his wife, children are US citizens (Dawn September 13, 2011) Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan assured the US in 2008 that he and his party were pro-American. According to a US embassy cable released by WikiLeaks, “Saying that his wife and children in fact are American, Nisar did admit that he went to the US Embassy in London to renew his daughter’s passport because he wanted to avoid being seen at the US Embassy in Islamabad.” More telling, however, is Khan’s stance on US military action within Pakistan, and how the PML-N would act to remain “publicly credible”. Khan reportedly avoided saying that the PML-N opposed either air attacks or US ground action, contrary to its reaction over the May 2011 raid in Abbottabad by a US Navy SEALs team which killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Reference: WikiLeaks: Chaudhry Nisar did not want to be seen at the US embassy in Islamabad (By Saba Imtiaz Published: September 11, 2011 Express Tribune) Calling the drone strike that killed Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud on Friday “an attack on regional peace by America,” Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Saturday said bilateral ties with the US will now be reviewed. Speaking to a press conference after concluding a high level meeting at the interior ministry, he vowed to raise the matter at international forums including the United Nations. In a statement, he said executing Molla after a delay of 42 years to the events of 1971 was very unfortunate and tragic and some circles are declaring it a judicial murder. Molla became the first person to be hanged for his role in the country's bloody 1971 war of independence when he was sent to the gallows at a prison in the capital Dhaka late Thursday.
