Attack on Ahsan Iqbal and Playing with Fire in Punjab

One major political party also chose to exploit the issue and continued to do so at both the constituency and national level, ignoring the counsel of several commentators that this was akin to playing with dynamite. You can start this fire but when it gets raging you cannot extinguish its flames. If there is one thing that we seem to be utterly committed to, it is to never learn from history. And our own recent history in particular. Whatever the justification, the policy of nurturing religious militancy has cost us dearly. The images of our brave martyrs, uniformed or otherwise, and their loved ones are a slap-in-the-face reminder if one was indeed needed. All contestants must know that while stoking divisive flames, religious, sectarian or ethnic, may well bring them gains, the temporary advantage of following such a path will lead to hellish consequences. Abrar-ul-Haq and Imran Khan want us to respect these Rogue and Vagabond Clerics - 1

However, one man who has humiliated himself in this tragic situation is Ahsan Iqbal’s opponent from the Narowal district, Abrar ul-Haq, the musician-turned politician and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader. In a bizarre attempt to use this attack on one of the most senior and dignified statesmen in the country for point scoring, Abrar ul-Haq offered the minister treatment at his Sahara hospital in Narowal in a tweet as distasteful as it could get. This wasn’t all. Abrar while talking to a TV channel in the aftermath of the attack resorted even to veiled threats to the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, saying that the people had been calling him and justifying the attack, and then told the PML-N leaders to stay cautious. It isn’t the first time that Abrar ul-Haq has explicitly tried to woo the extremist right-wing vote-bank. In November 2017, when a number of Labbaik goons had surrounded Ahsan Iqbal’s house in Narowal and in turn had been baton-charged by the police, Abrar in a video message had not only justified the vandalism of the Labbaik activists but had gone on to issue sermons for the PML-N leadership, especially naming Ahsan Iqbal, saying the party leaders were ruining their afterlife. Abrar-ul-Haq and Imran Khan want us to respect these Rogue and Vagabond Clerics - 2

The point here is simple: a young man, semi-schooled, indoctrinated, who can’t find employment but can become the president of the youth wing of TLYRA and can come up with Rs. 15,000 for a pistol and Rs. 1,800 for purchasing 50 rounds for his weapon. Pakistan’s history, post-1979, is a testimony to the fact that ‘blasphemy’ is a nuclear option. Unfortunately, almost all major political parties have resorted to it for petty politicking. None seems to realize that starting this fire will engulf everyone. It has also been hyped by unscrupulous charlatans and televangelists. This has reached a point where any semi-schooled man looking for a place in Jannah can take it upon himself to kill whoever he deems to have presumably insulted Islam’s Prophet. But more than that, it is, to quote Mencken, the grotesqueries, chicaneries and theological buffooneries practiced by unethical clerics and large segments of their cretinous followers that is the problem. Perish the thought that others will condemn this act by Abid Hussain. As I write this, there will be many who would be preparing themselves for performing what they think is a sacred task. The accused told the police he was asked by Data Sahib to kill minister Iqbal. According to him he also saw other holy personages in his dream. There, we now have a good test case for psychologists and their Jungian mishmash. Incidentally, the accused also went to Dubai but returned after a month because he didn’t like the “mahol” (environment) there. So, here we have some initial observations. Let’s hope we draw the right lessons from them. Orya Maqbool Jan shower praises on Khadim Hussain Rizvi

1. (C) Summary: While politicians and religious leaders have sought to establish inter-religious peace in Gojra village after the August 1 burning of eight Christians, human rights activists have urged the government to reconsider the blasphemy law, which sparked the killing of a Muslim businessman in Sheikhupura August 4. In an August 6 meeting with A/PO, members of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan warned that the government must punish the perpetrators, and suggested modifying the blasphemy law that allows such incidents to occur. Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the imam of Lahore's Badshahi Mosque, related that he spent the week in Gojra encouraging interfaith reconciliation. He underscored that extremist Brelvi group Sunni Tehreek first sparked the riot, though an Ahl-e-Hadith mosque encouraged the violence. End Summary. The US gave money to a Pakistani Muslim group that organised anti-Taliban rallies, but which later demonstrated in support of an extremist who killed a leading liberal politician, the US Embassy in Pakistan said Wednesday. US government website Usaspending.gov shows that the group, the Sunni Ittehad Council, received $36,607 from Washington in 2009. A US diplomat said that the embassy had given money to the group to organise the rallies, but that it had since changed direction and leadership. He said it was a one-off grant, and wouldn't be repeated. He didn't give his name because he wasn't authorised to speak about the issue on the record. The grant was first reported by the Council of Foreign Relations on its website. The Ittehad council was formed in 2009 to counter extremism. It groups politicians and clerics from Pakistan's traditionalist Barelvi Muslim movement, often referred to as theological moderates in the Pakistani context. The American money was used to organise nationwide rallies against militants and suicide bombings, the embassy official said. The demonstrations received widespread media coverage, and were some of the first against extremism in the country. The rhetoric at the rallies was mostly focused on opposing militant attacks on shrines, which Barelvis frequent but are opposed by Deobandi Muslims, Pakistan's other main Muslim sect. In 2011 and also this month, however, the council led demonstrations in support of the killer of Salman Taseer, a governor who was killed a year ago for his criticism of anti-blasphemy laws. The displays have appalled Pakistani liberals and stoked international fears that the country is buckling under the weight of extremism. Taseer's assassin, Mumtaz Qadri, is a Barelvi. He claimed he acted to defend the honour of Prophet Mohammed. Reference: US aided Pakistan group which supported extremists January 11, 2012 https://www.dawn.com/news/687293

1. (S) Summary: A well-placed Deobandi religious leader told Principal Officer in a meeting on March 18 that extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP) was increasing its activities in the central Punjab city of Faisalabad, the province's second largest, in collaboration with elements of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and a splinter group from the banned terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The cleric reported that SSP had recently launched a pamphlet campaign across the city in which it called for people to take steps to enforce Islamic law including: (1) cease business and social activities at the five daily calls to prayer, (2) remove all sources of ""vulgarity"" such as televisions, cd players, and radios from their homes, (3) seek dispute resolution through local imams rather than the courts, (4) take Friday rather than Sunday as the weekly holiday, and (4) strictly enforce purdah for female family members. The pamphlet states that it comes from SSP with support from the TTP and specifically praises ""the enforcement of Sharia in Swat"" and recommends it as a model for Faisalabad. Moral of the Story: In simpler terms, in Ahmad Raza’s endeavours, we see Islam entwined with the local cultural moorings evolving through the historical process. What Ahmad Raza failed to guard against was the exclusion and takfir. In his famous fatwa Husam al-Haramain ala Manhar al-Kufr wa’l Main (The Sword of the Haramain at the Throat of Kufr and Falsehood), which was written in 1902 but became public in 1906, Ahmed Raza denounced several individuals in the early twentieth-century India. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian was the first on Ahmad Raza’s lists of kafirs (infidels). He was followed by some eminent Ulema from Deoband denomination like Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, Ashraf Ali Thanvi and Khalil Ahmad Ambethwi whom he described as Wahabis. Among the twelver Shias and the organisation of the Ulema known as the Nadwat al-Ulama, he accused some specific people of kufr. This is the situation right now when two Barelvi factions are trading fatwas, calling each other kafir. One shudders to think about the prevalent situation invested with the possible likelihood of sub-sectarian violence among the Sunnis. A Time of Madness: A Memoir of Partition by Salman Rashid

Salman Rashid is Pakistan’s most widely travelled travel writer with few places in the country that do not carry his footprint. Acclaimed as ‘the most erudite travel writer of the country’, he is the author of eight books that include anthologies of his newspaper articles. This book is the outcome of nearly a quarter century of the Deosai romance over several visits to the plateau. During the chaos of partition in 1947, something dreadful happened in the city of Jalandhar in Punjab. As a result of this, Salman Rashid's family fled Jalandhar for Pakistan, the newly created country across the border. They were among the nearly two million people uprooted from their homes in the greatest transmigration in history. Besides those who fled, other members of the family became part of a grimmer statistic: They featured among the more than one million unfortunate souls who paid with their lives for the division of India and creation of Pakistan. After living in the shadow of his family’s tragedy for decades, in 2008, Rashid made the journey back to his ancestral village to uncover the truth. A time of madness tells the story of what he discovered with great poignancy and grace. It is a tale of unspeakable brutality but it is also a testament to the uniquely human traits of forgiveness, redemption and the resilience of the human spirit.  Introduction of Salman Rashid

And in the end, when Rashid does indeed uncover the terrible secret, when the last clue to the puzzle has fallen in place, when he finds himself standing face to face with the man whose father had led a murderous mob, when he understands the reason for his family’s long silence, he finds nothing in his heart but understanding and compassion. As to why this had to happen, the only solace, if there can be solace in a situation like this, is in the fact that such a tragedy did not just fall to his lot; it happened to millions. However, if violence and bestiality are followed by guilt and remorse, forgiveness is possible. A heart-felt apology, even after seven decades, can heal old wounds. A Time of Madness seems to be telling us that while we may fall victims to the madness unleashed by political and religious leaders causing us to fall into pits of unimaginable darkness, it is up to us to find our way back to light. Only genuine remorse and real forgiveness can show us the way. Ammara's Adda with Salman Rashid

Salman Rashid’s latest book, published in India, is the story of his grandfather’s pre-partition household. A Time of Madness – A memoir of partition narrates how Rashid’s grandfather was murdered by a Sikh neighbour. Ten years ago, Rashid met the son of the murderer in Jalandhar and he narrated the tale of the entire household to the audience. The talk was moderated by academic Shaista Sirajuddin and senior journalist Khaled Ahmed, both close friends of the author, who had heard of these stories already and read the book closely. Sirajuddin understood the author’s sentimental relationship with the story and carefully directed the talk while giving the author room to breathe and grieve. The hall was full of Rashid’s fans, some sitting on the ground, others standing on the stairs. The audience had many interesting questions to supplement Rashid’s intriguing story. Curious Case of Imran Khan, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman & MKRF

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on Tuesday broke his silence on reports of his plans to marry again in a series of tweets, accusing former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif of being behind the "vicious" campaign. Sharif denied the allegation and said he would not stoop so low. Pakistan’s political circles have been abuzz with speculation about the 65-year-old chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf marrying for a third time after an English daily reported on Saturday that he had married a woman who was his spiritual guide. The party issued a statement on Sunday that said Khan had only proposed marriage to Bushra Maneka, a divorcee and ‘pir’ (faith healer). Khan tweeted, "For 3 days I have been wondering have I looted a bank; or money laundered bns in nation's wealth; or ordered a model-town-like killing spree; or revealed state secrets to India? I have done none of these but discovered I have committed a bigger crime: wanting to get married." Shakil-ur-Rahman is the founder of Geo Television Network. In another tweet, he told “NS & MSR” that their vicious campaign has only strengthened his resolve to fight them. Imran Khan and Jang Group of Newspapers including its TV Channel Geo often scratch each others back and both of them deserve each other. People have short memory and their attention span is even more short like for example take this Memogate which was actually invented by the same Jang Group of Newspapers and its head-honchos Shaheen Sehbai and Mohammad Malick and Imran Khan conveniently used that worthless Jang Group's Cock and Bull story in his Lahore Rally in 2011 and yet both the Jang Group and Imran Khan have the audacity to badmouth each other for mudslinging and interfering in each others private lives  which is actually a hobby of Jang Group and Imran Khan both! Not only that but the Jang Group has the history of sabotaging every political government since early 70s, their Urdu columnists are particularly religious bigots, hate-mongers, ethnic bigots, rumor mongers and they were vicious from 2008 to 2013 when they were playing footsie with the Twice PCOed Fraud Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who with other Judges of the Supreme Court weakened Parliamentary System and interfered in executive branch of the state and became State itself and Imran Khan and his yahoo horde PTI were foot soldiers in Judiciary's War on the Parliament.

Khan urged the USG to seek "alternative points of views" about what is happening in the tribal areas of Pakistan, and he recommended speaking with General Orakzai, former NWFP Govenor, for starters. Khan charged that the GOP is "blinded by dollars," and consequently lacks an accurate view of what is happening on the ground. He further claimed that the GOP "whips up the threat of the Taliban" in order to get more money from the U.S. He claimed last year's Swat operation, which he termed a "debacle," was one such exaggeration that was "stage managed" in order to gain U.S. funds; there was no imminent threat of militants marching on Islamabad, he said. WASHINGTON, Nov 3: A senior US official responsible for counter-terrorism on Tuesday directly accused Pakistan of supporting training of militant groups in Afghanistan as well as providing "material support" to some of the Kashmiri militants. "There are numerous Kashmiri separatist groups and sectarian groups involved in terrorism which use Pakistan as a base...We have repeatedly asked Islamabad to end support of terrorist training in Afghanistan," Michael Sheehan, State Department's coordinator for counter-terrorism, told a Senate Foreign Relations sub-committee. The sub-committee hearing was called and presided over by Senator Sam Brownback and the list of experts who testified included a former CIA officer in Pakistan Milt Bearden, president of Stimson Centre Michael Krepon, John Hopkins University Central Asia Institute chairman Dr Fredrick Starr and a Pakistani- American businessman and columnist Mansoor Ijaz. Mr Sheehan recently visited India to coordinate US-Indian responses to terrorist threats but when asked whether he would also visit Pakistan soon, he said: "Hopefully." "Pakistan has frequently acknowledged what it calls moral and diplomatic support for militants in Kashmir who employ violence and terrorism against Indian interests. We have continuing reports of Pakistani material support for some of these militants," Mr Sheehan said. He named several Pakistan-based militant Islamic groups including Lashkar Taiba, Harkatul Jehad Islami and Hizbul Mujahideen, which, he said, "operate freely in Pakistan and support terrorist attacks in Kashmir." Asked by Indian and Pakistani journalists after his hearing whether he found any change in the policy after the overthrow of the Nawaz government, Mr Sheehan said: "We are still waiting for their responses and it is too early to judge whether there is any change." When a correspondent pointed out whether it was "business as usual" with the military government, he crisply said "no" but added: "We hope to work with them on all these issues." Despite playing at the heart of the Mehrangate, Kidwai got lucrative position during Musharraf’s regime when he remained High Commissioner and Permanent Representative of Pakistan at the United Nations Environment Programme in 2003-2004. Even after the restoration of democracy in 2008, Kidwai enjoyed the status of Roving Ambassador until Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani sacked him with two others from the same position on February 11, 2009. The Mehran Bank scandal also known as Mehrangate was a major political scandal in the history of Pakistan between 1990-1994 in which senior politicians and political parties were found to have been bribed by the Pakistan Army and intelligence officers, from ISI, to prevent the re-election and to destabilise the government of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Initiated by the then army chief Mirza Aslam Beg with the alleged support of President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, payments of up to Rs140 million were made by the then Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director-General Lieutenant-General Asad Durrani and Corps of Engineers Engineer-in-Chief Lieutenant-General Javed Nasir via the owner of Mehran Bank Yunus Habib. Intelligence funds were deposited in Mehran Bank in 1992 propping up what was an insolvent bank as a favour for its owner’s help in loaning money to the Inter-Services Intelligence in 1990 that was used in the creation of the right wing alliance Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and bankrolling the campaigns of many opponents of the PPP. The scandal subsequently broke after the new ISI Director-General Lieutenant-General Javed Ashraf Qazi decided to transfer the intelligence fund back to state-owned banks as per official rules.  PTI Leader Dr Babar Awan on Imran Khan, Sita White Affair and Illegitimate Love Child Tyrian

A U-S court has ruled that cricket star Imran Khan is the father of a five year child. The ruling came from a Los Angeles court after ex-girlfriend Sita White filed a lawsuit claiming Khan's paternity over her daughter Tyrian-Jade.White says Khan should apologise to the Pakistani people for misleading them during his election campaign that he had no children before he married Jemima Goldsmith. A Los Angeles court on Wednesday said Imran Khan wasn't playing cricket and added it was time he owned up to being the father of Tyrian-Jade White. The former Pakistani cricket star has denied fathering the five-year-old American girl with British heiress Sita White who now lives in L-A. But the court went with the daughter of Lord "Gordy" White - and gave Khan the official stamp of father. The ruling came after Khan failed to respond to a paternity suit and a request to take a bloodtest. Reference: A U-S court has ruled that cricket star Imran Khan is the father of a five year child. (Associated Press Archive Date: 08/13/1997)  It is official now: Babar Awan has quietly conceded before the Election Commission through the latest nomination papers for the Senate slot that he is neither a PhD doctor nor had acquired any education from Saudi Arabia, contrary to his past declarations in 2006. Not only he mentioned holding a doctorate degree earned from the fraudulent Monticello University of United States, in previous papers for Senate seat, he continued using the title ‘Dr’ with his name. Even his twitter identity is @DrBabarAwan, not amended to-date. But in latest nomination papers, he is Zaheerud Din Babar only, without the prefix ‘Dr’.

His radical break from the past practice has gone unnoticed even by the PML-N, the main rival party that has not challenged this contradiction in his previous and present nomination papers. The Supreme Court that has directed him to produce educational credentials after suspending his legal practice license seems to have forced him to submit a statement of facts in the nomination paper. As for Babar’s case is concerned, he declared under oath in the 2006 nomination papers, a long list of his qualifications. Babar then disclosed that he did his Matric in Science in 1971 from Board of Sargodha; Intermediate in Humanities from Board of Sargodha in 1973; BA in Arts from the University of Punjab in 1975; Masters in Economics from the University of Punjab in 1978; DAL in Arabic Islamic Law from King Saud University, KSA in 1982; LLB from University of Karachi in 1986; and PhD in Criminal Law from the “Monty Cello University USA” in 1998 session. He also wrote his full name as “Dr. Zaheerud Din Babar Awan.”Awan, interestingly misspelled the fake Monticello university in his nomination papers as “Monty Cello” from where he affirmed to have done his doctorate degree. He claimed to have done his PhD in Criminal Law from “Monty Cello University USA” in 1998. Notwithstanding his declaration of PhD degree in 2006 paper, a photocopy was not submitted unlike other educational certificates annexed with the documents. His DAL from King Saud University was not shown either. Confusion ensues when you mix religious rhetoric with politics & this is the case with Pakistani politicians since Jinnah to the present lot and Imran Khan is no exception , he tries to ride many boats at the same time e.g. he claims to be real heir of Jinnah and Iqbal, Sufi, Mullah, Secular, Liberal, Democrat, Patriot, Leftist, Progressive etc.etc and all this ends up in confusion. Yesterday, he participated in Finality of Prophet-hood Conference in Golra Punjab to strengthen his vote religious bank particularly the Barelvi votes in Punjab but browse his last 10 years interviews which he gave to the international media on Religious Extremism, Misuse of Blasphemy Law, Murder of Salmaan Taseer, Basic Human Rights for the Marginalized Communities in Pakistan, Religious Persecution in Pakistan, Terrorism and Taliban , and his every interview create more confusion and problem then solving the existing one (evident in the 3 video clips below). If Imran Khan wasn't enough, we also have the worst kind of time serves and opportunists i.e. Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) whose center of attention is Punjab and Punjab alone and they are least bothered that their footsie with Mullahs will not only ruin Punjab but shake the very foundations of Pakistan because core of Religious Extremists is based in Punjab and so far no long term action is taken against them.

He believed that this increase coincided with a number of visits to Faisalabad from activists both of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and a splinter group from the southern Punjab-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM). XXXXXXXXXXXX believed that the activists were involved in recruiting for TTP militant operations in the FATA and NWFP through madrassas in southern Punjab and hoped to replicate that success in Faisalabad. The sticker, which he stated was also being printed and distributed as a pamphlet, praised the implementation of Sharia law in Swat and exhorted Muslims to pursue the same sort of Sharia law in Faisalabad. It then recounted five steps that every Faisalabad based Muslim should take to begin the process of implementation in the district. The steps were: : (1) cease business and social activities at the five daily calls to prayer, (2) remove all sources of ""vulgarity"" such as televisions, cd players, and radios from their homes, (3) seek dispute resolution through local imams rather than the courts, (4) take Friday rather than Sunday as the weekly holiday, and (4) strictly enforce purdah for female family members. Maulana XXXXXXXXXXXX shared that he had received reliable information that SSP leader Maulana Ludhianvi was on a fundraising trip to Tripoli sponsored by the Libyan government. XXXXXXXXXXXX claimed that Ludhianvi had made contact with Libyan officials in the guise of working against Iran and Shia agents in Pakistan. (Note: SSP was originally founded as a violent anti-Shia organization and has, in the past, received extensive foreign funding from a variety of Sunni states, including Saudi Arabia. End Note). According to XXXXXXXXXXXX, Ludhianvi was scheduled to return to Pakistan in ""a few days"" and was bringing with him a ""donation"" from the Libyan government valued at nearly 25 million Pakistani rupees (approximately $312,000) that XXXXXXXXXXXX was certain would be used to increase further SSP activities. Chaudhry Nisar admits his wife, children are US citizens (Dawn September 13, 2011) Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan assured the US in 2008 that he and his party were pro-American. According to a US embassy cable released by WikiLeaks, “Saying that his wife and children in fact are American, Nisar did admit that he went to the US Embassy in London to renew his daughter’s passport because he wanted to avoid being seen at the US Embassy in Islamabad.” More telling, however, is Khan’s stance on US military action within Pakistan, and how the PML-N would act to remain “publicly credible”. Khan reportedly avoided saying that the PML-N opposed either air attacks or US ground action, contrary to its reaction over the May 2011 raid in Abbottabad by a US Navy SEALs team which killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Greater Sindh, Greater Punjab, Smaller Pakistan --> Blood Borders.

(2006) International borders are never completely just. But the degree of injustice they inflict upon those whom frontiers force together or separate makes an enormous difference — often the difference between freedom and oppression, tolerance and atrocity, the rule of law and terrorism, or even peace and war. The most arbitrary and distorted borders in the world are in Africa and the Middle East. Drawn by self-interested Europeans (who have had sufficient trouble defining their own frontiers), Africa’s borders continue to provoke the deaths of millions of local inhabitants. But the unjust borders in the Middle East — to borrow from Churchill — generate more trouble than can be consumed locally. While the Middle East has far more problems than dysfunctional borders alone — from cultural stagnation through scandalous inequality to deadly religious extremism — the greatest taboo in striving to understand the region’s comprehensive failure isn’t Islam but the awful-but-sacrosanct international boundaries worshipped by our own diplomats. Of course, no adjustment of borders, however draconian, could make every minority in the Middle East happy. In some instances, ethnic and religious groups live intermingled and have intermarried. Elsewhere, reunions based on blood or belief might not prove quite as joyous as their current proponents expect. The boundaries projected in the maps accompanying this article redress the wrongs suffered by the most significant “cheated” population groups, such as the Kurds, Baluch and Arab Shia, but still fail to account adequately for Middle Eastern Christians, Bahais, Ismailis, Naqshbandis and many another numerically lesser minorities. And one haunting wrong can never be redressed with a reward of territory: the genocide perpetrated against the Armenians by the dying Ottoman Empire. For its part, the unnatural state of Saudi Arabia would suffer as great a dismantling as Pakistan. What Afghanistan would lose to Persia in the west, it would gain in the east, as Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier tribes would be reunited with their Afghan brethren (the point of this exercise is not to draw maps as we would like them but as local populations would prefer them). Pakistan, another unnatural state, would also lose its Baluch territory to Free Baluchistan. The remaining “natural” Pakistan would lie entirely east of the Indus, except for a westward spur near Karachi. (2014) KARACHI: In a no holds barred attack on his party’s former coalition partners, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Friday evening said if their demands are unacceptable to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) then Urdu speaking Sindhis should be given a separate province. Speaking to the party workers in Hyderabad in the wake of upcoming local government polls, he demanded equal rights for Urdu and Sindhi speaking population of Sindh. He also threatened that the demand of a separate province can quickly turn into a demand of a separate country for Urdu speakers of Sindh. Severally criticizing the provincial government regarding new delimitations before the LG elections, the MQM chief alleged that the PPP wants to keep away from the polls. “Torch bearers of democracy had never been able to hold local government elections,” Hussain said sarcastically in an obvious reference to the PPP. Awarding a legal victory to the MQM, the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Dec 30 ruled all amendments made to the Local Government Ordinance unconstitutional, paving way for the polls to be conducted under previous delimitations. Altaf Hussain Interview with Dr.Shahid Masood - 1

Altaf Hussain Interview with Dr.Shahid Masood - 1 by SalimJanMazari

(6 December 2004): KARACHI, Dec 5: Addressing a huge public meeting at the Nishtar Park here on Sunday, Muttahida Qaumi Movement's founder Altaf Hussain called for convening an all-party conference for evolving a national consensus on Kashmir and other vital issues confronting the country. He also stressed the need for a code of conduct for political parties and said criticism should not degenerate into calling an opponent "a traitor or a kafir". He offered an olive branch to rival political parties and declared he would not respond to the criticism because it was now essential to put heads together and work out a strategy for national survival. Mr Hussain claimed that he was making a last attempt to save Pakistan, as activists chanted slogans of "jiyae Altaf". Mr Hussain advised Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Rahim to undertake a visit to Rajhastan and develop relations with people across the border. Why can't this be done by a functionary of the Sindh government when Punjab chief minister was undertaking a similar visit to the Indian Punjab and was mixing with the people there and even offering prayers in Sikh temples, he said. Nobody, he added, questioned the patriotism of the Punjab chief minister. He deemanded that the Khokhrapar-Monabao route be opened as soon as possible. Otherwise, he said, the people of Sindh themselves would do it. Mr Hussain stressed that "no greater Punjab plan would be acceptable and demanded that people of smaller provinces should be recognized and respected. He talked about the changed geo-strategic environment since 9/11 and said that India's importance had increased in recent months while the importance of Pakistan, which was frontline state in the international war on terrorism, had diminished lately. It was, therefore, necessary for all political forces to put their heads together. Stressing that his party stood for peace and amity, he reiterated his stand on the two-nation theory and said that he did not violate this concept. The Quaid-i-Azam advocated it but he himself later declared that a vast majority of Muslims had to stay back in India. REFERENCES: Muttahida calls for APC on Kashmir: Public meeting at Karachi 2004-12-06 http://www.dawn.com/news/376171/muttahida-calls-for-apc-on-kashmir-public-meeting-at-karachi Nazir Naji on Greater Punjab 2 Daily Jang 2004 http://www.mqm.org/images/naznagjang041209.htm

It was demolished on the day the borders of Pakistan were closed for the Indian Muslims in 1953. The two- nation theory was negated again when Bangladesh emerged in 1972. He warned that the country would suffer if political and religious forces did not change their attitude and did not give up the politics of accusation and counter-accusations. He offered that as a first the Muttahida would not reply to accusations and directed workers of his party not to respond to accusations at any stage because the party believed in love and peace and wanted to follow the policy of 'live and let live.' He reiterated his proposal for a code of conduct for all political and religious parties in the interest of forming a culture of democracy and tolerance in the country. The theme of the public meeting was "Peace and stability leads to progress and prosperity". Rejecting the criticism from certain elements of his recent India visit and his proposal about the Line of Control (LoC). Mr Hussain said that he would welcome and withdraw his proposal if anybody came up with a better proposal. Earlier the deputy convener of the party Dr Farooq Sattar said that the Muttahida public meeting was a referendum and proved that the people of the city were against religious fundamentalism and wanted a secular and tolerant culture in the province. He said the meeting was also a reply to the MMA public meeting held at same venue last week in which only a few thousand people turnout. He claimed that the participation would be doubled when all coalition parties of the Sindh government would hold a public meeting. Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim said that the Muttahida rally proved that the people rejected the MMA. He said he was chief minister because of the support of Altaf Hussain who had always fought for the rights of Sindh while those who used a Sindh card never defended the rights of the province. The Secretary General of the PML Sindh, Imtiaz Shaikh, congratulated Altaf Hussain for holding such a big public meeting. Dev Das MNA, Abdul Khaliq Baloch, Nisar Panwar, Col (retd) Tahir Mashhadi and Badsha Khan delivered speeches in Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto and Punjabi languages. (2011) Altaf Hussain AND MQM ask Taliban to join hands -- KARACHI: In what appears to be a major policy shift, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has invited the Taliban to join hands with their fellow countrymen, instead of disassociating themselves from Pakistan. “I ask the Taliban leaders that this country came into being as a result of great sacrifices. Come and join Pakistanis…do not disassociate yourselves from Pakistan,” he said in a telephonic address at the 27th foundation day of the MQM on Friday. The day was celebrated across Pakistan and Mr Hussain’s address was simultaneously relayed to 34 places in the country. Carrying MQM’s tri-coloured flags and portraits of Mr Hussain, a large number of people attended the main rally at Karachi’s Jinnah Ground. Condemning the United States for drone attacks in tribal areas, Mr Hussain said that the US was violating Pakistan’s sovereignty and killing innocent people, adding that drone attacks were being carried out in clear violation of the UN charter. He assured the government and the armed forces that every Pakistani would support them if they took ‘meaningful steps’ with courage and bravery to stop drone strikes and part ways with the carrot-and-stick game of superpowers. —Staff Reporter REFERENCE: Taliban asked to join hands with fellow countrymen 2011-03-18 http://www.dawn.com/news/614195/taliban-asked-to-join-hands-with-fellow-countrymen

Imminent threat: Altaf says ISIS is more dangerous than Taliban Published: November 1, 2014: KARACHI: MQM leader Altaf Hussain disclosed on Friday that Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS), which is also known as Daish or by shorter acronym IS, has started taking roots in Pakistan which can entail far worse situation here than Rwanda and other African countries. “Army alone cannot control the situation. We all Pakistanis have to play our part, otherwise the situation will spiral out of control and Pakistan may witness civil war and genocide,” he said while addressing the media by telephone at a press conference at the party headquarters Nine Zero. The MQM leader warned the Pakistan government, political parties, youth and civil society members to be alert against the extremist organisation, calling it more dangerous than Taliban and al Qaeda. “You can find flags of this organisation right from Sadiqabad (southern) Punjab to Islamabad. It originally came to being on October 15, 2006 in Iraq, but now many militant groups and some Taliban and al Qaeda leaders have joined it,” he said, appealing to the authorities concerned to convene all parties conference (APC) on this issue. “Around 10 years ago, no one believed me when I made a hue and cry against hatcheries of Taliban and extremist groups in Karachi. The then government and leaders of political parties turned a deaf ear to me, but it later proved (to be correct) when these militants started their activities in the city,” he said. Briefing about the organisation, he said that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi initially led the organisation in Iraq and militant organisations from other areas including South Western Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Afghanistan joined it. Later, when Zarqawi was killed, its shura council appointed Abu Omar al-Baghdadi as its head under the name of Abu Abdullah al-Rasheed al-Baghdadi. In 2010, the consultative or Shura council of the militant organisation announced the death of Abu Omar and appointed Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi as its new head, who has integrated different militant groups and wants to start their activities in Pakistan. “Army and its intelligence agencies should also mobilise the network and we are ready to help them,” he said, offering the army his party’s help in the mission. Altaf, while recalling the existence of Taliban in this region said that America created Taliban after the cold war. “Not only America, but Saudi Arabia and Pakistan also supported Taliban against the Soviet Union,” he said, adding that after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the US pulled out of Afghanistan by ignoring the militants they had created. “Since there was no one to financially support them, these Taliban started looting and plundering the people by committing bank robberies, kidnapping for ransom, extortion and occupation of lands in order to generate funds,” he said, adding that thousands of innocent people and personnel of police and army were killed and important installation were attacked by these extremists. “They want to impose their self-styled sharia at gunpoint.” MQM leader stressed the need to impart awareness among the people against the ISIS. (6 December 2006)  'Punjab-to-Punjab' contact slammed: Altaf Hussain demands Sindh be allowed access to India  KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement's self-exiled leader Altaf Hussain on Sunday spoke extensively on the increasing contact between the Punjabs of Pakistan and India and demanded that the government in Pakistan not only allow Lahore to befriend Chandigarh, but also permit Sindh to get nearer to its Indian borders. "The chief minister of Pakistani Punjab has recently visited Amritsar and says the people of Punjab do not accept the Berlin Wall between them. His words have not damaged our much-trumpeted two-nation theory but it would have had Altaf Hussain visited any prominent temple during his recent Indian visit," said Mr Hussain during his address to the public meeting his party organised mainly in support of the president's uniform, at Nishtar Park. People attended the public meeting in huge numbers, overflowing the bounds of Nishtar Park. The meeting place was decorated with illuminations, banners, placards and pamphlets inscribed with pro-Altaf and pro-democracy slogans. The activists were holding party flags in a large numbers and they were chanting 'Jeay Altaf' and 'Jeay Sindh' slogans. The police and party volunteers had blocked main MA Jinnah Road to route the vehicles carrying party activists, media and dignitaries attending the meeting. The traffic police had devised alternative routes for routine traffic and there were traffic jams in various parts of the city despite that it was a weekly holiday. The organisers were repeatedly announcing that a large number of the vehicles carrying their activists from different parts of the city and elsewhere from Sindh were stuck in traffic and could not reach the meeting place. They said those who could not make it were asked to stay where they were and the organisers had managed to install loudspeakers there to for them to hear Altaf's speech from London. When the organisers announced Altaf's speech was about to be broadcast, the entire park was showered with flowers by party activists present on ground and those standing on a fire engine's ladder. Thousands of balloons were released into the air and party's theme song "Saathi" was played. Mr Hussain said the two-nation theory was an ambiguous slogan, which was used by rulers whenever they deemed fit, for political gain. "The Punjab chief minister visited the Golden Temple where he was presented a sword but it did not hurt our two-nation theory, but the same theory would have been in danger had I visited some places which do not belong to Muslims, during my visit to India," he said. He said the people from East Punjab and West Punjab visited each other frequently and he made it clear that he had no objection to that, but insisted that the people of Sindh also be allowed to visit India freely. Chairman of Pakistan Ulema Council Allama Tahir Ashrafi has said that certain powers want to create a law and order situation in Karachi and erode the mandate of the MQM one way or another. “I say to these forces to adopt the path of dialogues as the country needs love and not hatred.”He said this while talking to the journalists at MQM Head Office Nine Zero after meeting with the Co-ordination Committee. Hailing the statement of Mr Altaf Hussain, the founder and leader of the MQM, regarding the establishing of the system of the Pious Caliphs in Pakistan, Allama Ashrafi said that the MQM and the Ulema Council would make concerted effort for the just and equitable system in the country. Referring to the discussion of Mr Hussain with Dr Tahirul Qadri on this subject, Allama Ashrafi said, “We would go with Altaf Hussain with whomsoever he would go for attaining this objective.” Allama Ashrafi said that he had to come to Nine Zero to repay a debt. “Altaf Hussain had asked me to come to London or Nine Zero after an incident had befallen me. He had expressed his love and I had assured him that I would come as soon as I regained my health.” Allama Ashrafi said that whenever madrasas and religious scholars were targeted during the last one month, it was only Mr Hussain who expressed his well-wishes for our injured. He said, “The MQM is a reality and those who seek to avoid reality are bereft of knowledge and wisdom. Those spewing hatred will have to face defeat and the feelings of love would grow.” “Altaf Hussain has talked about the establishing of the system of Pious Caliphs in the country only after sending poor people to the assemblies. I ask him to start the struggle for this cause and we would support as his soldiers. Every madrasa or religious organization that does not have any political ambition wants the just system of the Pious Caliphs in the country. This is the only system that can give justice to the poor.” Allama Ashrafi said, “Allah has bestowed religious knowledge to Altaf Hussain besides giving him political sagacity. We will work together for establishing a just and equitable system in Pakistan.” Speaking about the law and order situation in Karachi, Allama Ashrafi said, “Peace cannot be established in Karachi by ignoring the MQM and the followers of the Sunni and the Shia schools thought. Those who think that peace can be restored in Karachi by keeping out these forces are only playing with the sentiments of the people.” He warned that these were the same people who wanted to weaken the MQM and destroy Karachi. He asserted that if any harm came to Karachi then the existence of Pakistan would also be threatened. He said that the poor people would have to be empowered in Pakistan by ending the rule of the privileged class. The feudal system must be wrapped up and justice should be done to the poor. “Together we will create a Pakistan of the poor people.” Earlier when Allama Tahir Ashrafi arrived at Nine Zero, he was warmly welcomed by the Co-ordination Committee and a large number of the MQM workers. Deputy Conveners Mr Anis Ahmed Qaimkhani and Senator Mrs Nasrin Jalil were present in the meeting held in the Nine Zero. Talking to the journalists Mrs Jalil said, “We want to build strong relations and promote the feelings of love as they would have positive effect on the political culture of Pakistan.” She thanked Allama Ashrafi for his visit. ISIS threat looming large in Pakistan: Altaf KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Friday said that the Iraqi militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has entered Pakistan, adding that it is more dangerous than the Taliban and al Qaeda. The MQM chief said that a number of Taliban were seeking memberships in the ISIS. In his address in Karachi via telephone from London, Altaf Hussain said that he was the first one to alert Pakistan about the Taliban’s entrance in Karachi and that he was alerting the nation again regarding a threat that was bigger than the Taliban and al Qaeda. He said that he was going to make a revelation regarding a threat that “the majority of Pakistanis don’t know about”. The MQM chief said that the threat of ISIS was increasing in Pakistan with each passing day. He said that several of the Taliban members along with six commanders had joined the ISIS, whereas a large number of people continue to join them. He said that several ISIS flags were visible from southern Punjab to Islamabad. Altaf said that a new and grave threat in the shape of the ISIS had entered Pakistan. The MQM chief said that the army alone could not protect the nation, and that everyone had to play a role in this regard. Earlier this month, national and international media reported that six senior members of the TTP, including prominent regional leaders, had vowed allegiance to the Islamic State and its head, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Shahidullah Shahid had openly pledged allegiance to “the Caliph of Muslims... Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi” and said that he would listen to and obey his every order whether he liked the order or not. Baghdadi had proclaimed himself caliph of the entire Muslim world in June and demanded allegiance from all Muslims. The claim put him in direct opposition to Mullah Omar, who once provided a haven for Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda while the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. Earlier, Mullah Fazlullah had also expressed support for all groups fighting in Syria and Iraq, but said he continued to pledge allegiance to the leader of the Afghan Taliban. Altaf Hussain Interview with Dr.Shahid Masood - 3 by SalimJanMazari

May 12, 2013 - Updated 01 Altaf greets ‘Punjabi representative party’ on its big win: LONDON: Congratulating Pakistan Muslim League-N on its big win, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain called the Nawaz Shairf-led party which has so far bagged maximum number of seats in the center as ‘Punjabis representative party’. “Muslilm League-N has emerged victorious in elections 2013 and Nawaz Sharif as a representative of leader of the Punjabis,” Altaf Hussain said in his derogatory statement following PML-N’s winning big in the Punjab in today’s general elections. He did not stop there, saying Nawaz Sharif appears to have stood by his philosophy and slogan he chanted twenty years back ‘Jaag Punjabi Jaag, Teri Pag Noon Lag Gaya Dagh’. “Today he got the fruit of this slogan,” he added. Altaf Hussain said he extends hearty congratulations to the people of Punjab and hoped ‘as the leader of the biggest province of the country Nawaz Sharif will also treat the non-Punjabi people of the remaining three provinces with equality, justice and honesty’ with a view to promote brotherhood among people.
