MQM, Jamat-e-Islami & Al Qaeda.

July 2012: Leaders of two arch rival political parties, Jamaat-e-Islami and MQM, held their first formal dialogue at the former’s headquarters in Mansura, Lahore and agreed to maintain political contacts in future and work jointly for the security and integrity of the country. MQM delegation led by Federal Minister Dr Farooq Sattar met the Jamaat Islami Amir Syed Munawar Hasan and Secretary General Liaquat Baloch here on Tuesday during which the JI invited MQM to join the “Go America Go” movement and also to join the grand alliance for timely and transparent elections in the country. Others present during the highly significant political meeting were Farid Paracha and Salman Butt from the JI side and Provincial Minister Faisal Sabzwari, Waseh Jalil and some other MQM leaders. The two sides discussed the prevailing political situation, in the context of situation in Karachi and Balochistan, challenges to the national security and the forthcoming general elections. Later talking to media, Dr Farooq Sattar said that they discussed all the important issues with JI leaders and said the MQM has decided to contact all parties to resolve issues facing the country and build a national consensus to ensure national security. He said all the political parties should work for strengthening of democracy, political stability and holding of elections on schedule or before in a transparent manner. He said they also discussed with the JI leaders killings and lawlessness in Karachi. He said there is need for an agenda by all political parties which could give hope to the poor, improve economic situation and promote peace. Dr Farooq Sattar demanded the holding of round table conference to find out solution of problems to national security on priority basis and all parties should debate on present issues. Munawar Hassan said they welcome the MQM leaders at JI headquarters and hoped that contacts would continue between the two parties in the future. He pleaded for a grand alliance to ensure timely elections fearing that now there are speculations whether the elections would be held on time or not. Saudi Fatwa on Osama bin Laden Death

Shaykh 'Abdul-Muhsin on the Death of Usaamah ibn Laadin *http://www.fatwa-online.com/fataawa/worship/jihaad/jih005/0110512.htm

In the Name of Allaah, the All Compassionate, the All Merciful

Abdur-Rahmaan Aal 'Umaysaan reports: Our Shaykh, 'Abdul-Muhsin ibn Hamad al-'Abbaad al-Badar was asked regarding the killing of the Khaarijee Usaamah ibn Laadin, on Monday 28 Jumaada al-Awwal 1432 (corresponding to 2 May, 2011) after the 'Ishaa. prayer (without being recorded):

What is the balanced opinion regarding the killing of Usaamah ibn Laadin; Since there are those who rejoiced at his killing, whilst there are those who say he was a mujaahid - and [thereby] declared him to have attained martyrdom?

Our Shaykh responded: How was he a mujaahid?! Yes he was a mujaahid in the path of Shaytaan. Usaamah ibn Laadin brought about great evil [and harm] to the Muslims, and no doubt with his passing [away] - there is ease for them; The people will be at ease with his passing [away].

For example, after the 9/11, the former JI Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad stated that al-Qaeda was a figment of the Americans’ imagination. On the contrary, the then JI Secretary General Syed Munawar Hassan, the current chief of the party, said that al-Qaeda leaders were our brethren (Nawa-i-Waqt, October 13, 2002). Commenting on these statements, Prof. Ahmad said: ‘There is no contradiction between the two. The Muslims in al-Qaeda are our brethren. They should be punished if they are criminals!’ He sounded mightily reluctant to hold Al-Qaeda responsible for 9/11. He even refused to give any credence to Gulbadeen Hikmatyar’s statement that Al-Qaeda was responsible for 9/11. (It may be added here that Hikmatyar is Jamaat-i-Islami’s favorite Afghan leader.) Instead, he finds “dozens of scholarly books” casting doubt on the official version more credible. He justified the two-nation theory saying, the Hindus and the Muslims coexisted peacefully only under the Muslim rule and such an existence was otherwise impossible. ‘The colonial rule divided the Hindus and the Muslims…that resulted in the 1947 riots!’ He admitted that during the last 15-20 years, the Pakistani society had become increasingly intolerant. He conceded that the blasphemy laws were being misused, but he did not favor amending them. ‘The punishment for blasphemy is death – in Christianity, the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Quran and the precepts of the Holy Prophet Mohammad.’ The blasphemy does not apply to serious academic debate, he said. ‘It applies only to derogatory remarks.’ He dismissed the argument that the Barelvis consider the Deobandis and the Ahl-i-Hadith blasphemers. On the Kashmir jihad, Prof. Ahmad said that the JI has no organizational relationship with the Hizbul Mujahideen. ‘But of course, we do meet and whatever the Hizb is doing, it is its fundamental right.’ The JI India and JI Pakistan have different ideas on certain issues such as Kashmir though the source of inspiration for them was the same. He justified it saying that they became different and independent organization after the partition because the political situation had changed. He said that Israel was an illegitimate country, but did not support the annihilation of the Israeli Jews. In fact, he supported the idea of a single state in which the Jews and the Palestinians live together. He acknowledged that the US and NATO played some positive role in the Balkans, but they allowed the massacre of the Muslims to continue. Their intervention was aimed at preventing the revival of Islamic movements there. Jamat-e-Islami Links with Al-Qaeda

Terror mastermind captured – Terror mastermind captured – Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is thought to be the man who masterminded the attacks on 11 September. His capture in Pakistan was seen as a key success in the US fight to counter al-Qaeda. BBC News Online presents key video reports following the arrest. Tuesday, 4 March, 2003, 22:56 GMT  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/2820179.stm  - KARACHI – Under immense pressure from the United States, a slow and gradual operation has begun in Pakistan against the strongest political voice of Islamists and the real mother of international Islamic movements, of which Osama bin Laden’s International Islamic Front is the spoiled child. In a surprise move this week, Pakistan’s federal minister of the interior, Faisal Saleh Hayat, listed a number of incidences in which members of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), the premier fundamentalist party in the country, had been tied to al-Qaeda, and called on it to “explain these links”. “It is a matter of concern that Jamaat-e-Islami, which is a main faction of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal [MMA], has neither dissociated itself from its activists having links with the al-Qaeda network nor condemned their activities,” Faisal said, adding that “one could derive a meaning out of its silence”. The MMA is an alliance of six religious parties that gained unprecedented electoral victories in national elections in 2002. One of its members is the leader of the opposition in the Lower House, while the MMA controls the provincial government in North West Frontier Province. It also forms part of a coalition government in Balochistan province. The MMA has 67 seats in the 342-seat National Assembly, with just under a third of them held by the JI. Asia Times Online predicted that the JI would be targeted (Jihadi’s arrest a small step for Pakistan , Aug 10) and now contacts confirm that moves have already started against associates of the JI in its strongest political constituency, Karachi. The next phase will most likely be in Rawalpindi and southern Punjab. Several close affiliates are believed to have been arrested by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) without charges being laid against them. ISLAMABAD: One of the top security agencies on Wednesday picked up Raja Ehsan Aziz, a member of Tehrik-e-Islami (TI), for his alleged connections with terrorists who had attacked the Parade Lane Mosque in Rawalpindi and Moon Market in Lahore. Tehrik-e-Islami is a splinter group of the JI. Two female members of the Tehrik have already been taken into custody. Sarwat Wahid, another female member whose son’s car was used in the Parade Lane Mosque attack, is missing. Also her son, Jawad, who was studying in Faisalabad after doing A Level from Beacon House School System, is missing. Aziz, a graduate of Columbia University who also served on senior positions at the Foreign Office, is a retired professor of International Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University. His elder son is an Army doctor. Aziz was taken away from his house in G/10-3 on Wednesday evening by sleuths of the Counter-Terrorism Cell, his wife Amira Aziz told The News. Amira, an ex-MNA of Jamaat-e-Islami and now a Shura member of the Tehrik, is a religious scholar and writes columns in an Urdu daily. Aziz’s driver, Phool Zeb from Nowshera, has already been arrested as investigators found a mobile SIM allegedly used for conversation during the attacks on the Parade Lane Mosque and Moon Market, was issued in his name. Likewise, the car used in the mosque attack belonged to Jawad, the son of a Tehrik-e-Islami woman, Sarwat Wahid, a resident of I-8 Sector, Islamabad. Both of them are missing since then. Likewise, Aziz’ son, Omer, a student of Islamic International University, has not returned home for the last five days. JI splinter group leader, females held for links to suicide attackers Friday, December 18, 2009 By Umar Cheema http://www.thenews.com.pk/TodaysPrintDetail.aspx?ID=214063&Cat=2&dt=12/21/2009

Aziz has been picked up for the second time, his wife said, denying any links of the family with terrorism incidents. “I’m a sworn enemy of America and can pay any price for it but I strongly oppose terrorism within Pakistan,” Amira Aziz told The News. She said the intelligence operatives had been following the women activists of Tehrik-e-Islami for the last six months and harassed them. She alleged that her husband was beaten black and blue when picked up last time and kept in illegal custody for a night. Amira said her son, Omer, a heart patient, was very upset when intelligence guys kept his father in their custody for a night. A female member of Tehrik, Najma Sana, who lives in G-9/1, is already in the agency’s custody for the last 10 days. Sarwat Wahid, after being chased by the intelligence agency, left Islamabad for Karachi where she was again pursued by the police. Her sister and children in Karachi have been arrested to press for recovery of Sarwat who has gone underground there. Sarwat’s son, Jawad, is also missing. Tahira Mumtaz, another female member of the Tehrik, was twice called for investigation over her alleged assistance to Sarwat to flee the capital. Altaf Aziz Khattack, SHO, said he was not aware of any such incident. He asked this correspondent to take up the matter with the R A Bazaar police in whose jurisdiction the mosque was attacked. When contacted, officials of the concerned police station said that they had not arrested Ehsan Aziz, adding the Army was investigating the attack and the matter may be taken up with them. The DG ISPR could not be contacted. Meet Dr. General Ziaul Haq, Ph.D. (Courtesy: Abbas Zaidi/Abbas Nasir)

Dr Shershah Syed, a KU graduate and a member of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, said that the responsibility for failing varsities didn’t lie with the chancellor alone. “The faculty members and alumni of the relevant institutions must also share the blame, as they didn’t raise their voice and protest against malpractices.” Citing an example, Dr Syed said the Dow International Medical College, which was part of the DUHS, had been deceiving students for many years by lying that a hospital was attached to the varsity. “It’s a small ward and not a hospital as the university claims in its prospectus. On top of that, the institution charges its students an exorbitant fee of $12,000 annually,” he said, adding that no one was taking notice of the severe violation of PMDC rules. He expressed dismay over the prevailing situation and said the discussion could prove futile in that the higher authorities had already decided to extend the services of the DUHS and KU vice chancellors.- First it was the Sitara-e-Imtiaz awards that our government gave out so generously to numerous people that barely deserved them. Now, we are faced with the reality of knowing that our very own Interior Minister Rehman Malik has received an honourary degree of Doctorate from the Karachi University. What’s more shocking than the fact that Malik is now Dr. Malik, is the reason given to explain why he was chosen: The degree has been awarded in recognition of his “matchless services to the country in the war on terror and particularly in restoring peace to the citizens of Karachi.” The fact that thousands have died in the war on terror and are still dying seems to not matter here. The fact that Karachi has lost hundreds in target killings under Malik’s reign also does not seem to make a difference. What seems to be the most disturbing thought on this news however remains, who actually believes Malik has made any kind of positive impact to Pakistan’s security situation? More importantly, how could Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ebad assess that “Malik’s efforts against terrorism and valuable help in maintaining law and order in Karachi are known to everyone.” If that’s true, then could it be possible that we are all simply oblivious to the great man Dr. Malik just might be under that cloak of failures that he wears? Geomentary - Mere Azeez Hum Watano. Story of the 3rd Martial Law - 21 Oct 2011 Part 1

http://youtu.be/wuF3UJJEkbY

When General Zia was awarded an LLD, there were no dissenting voices other than those of a few Punjab University professors. Most of them were sacked, and many of them were removed from department chairmanship - Ninety-nine percent of Pakistani (electronic and print) media (Urdu as well as English) is right wing, and 100 percent of it has run amok in fury over an honorary doctorate awarded to Interior Minister Rehman Malik by Governor Sindh Ishratul Ebad Khan. A newspaper editorialised its anger thus: “The huge smile on ‘Dr’ Malik’s face as he accepted his degree reaffirms his own sense of surety that all that he is doing is right.” A columnist wrote in sarcasm: “Rehman Malik has joined the ranks of 5,300 PhD scholars in Pakistan.” The Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba (IJT) protested in front of the Karachi Press Club; its leader thundered: “Awarding honorary degrees on political basis should be banned!” Since I came to know about him in 2007, I do not remember a single moment when I liked Rehman Malik. Thus, this piece is not a defence of the degree awarded to him. I wish to read between the lines of what and why the media has been railing against who and why. I wish also to put on record that an honorary degree was awarded to a person far, far worse than Rehman Malik. First, a correction: someone holding an honorary doctorate does not become a doctor in the academic sense. Such a person cannot write ‘Dr’ in front of his/her name. If Abdul Sattar Edhi is given an honorary doctorate, he will not be considered a scholar, but, in his case, a social worker. Also, these frothing-at-the-mouth babblers have not identified whether Malik’s award is a PhD or a Doctor of Laws (LLD). What is this ‘sense of surety’? Only the editorial writer in question can answer. I have looked up dictionaries and usage manuals these past few days, and none of them enlightened me on this. Now a word about the IJT’s shock and objection over the award. It was this very IJT and its parent Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) that gave an LLD to General Ziaul Haq. Yes, this is what happened in 1978 after he had deposed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s government and declared himself Pakistan’s Chief Martial Law Administrator (CMLA). Rehman Malik has been awarded the degree for, as the citation goes, his “matchless services to the country in the war on terror and particularly in restoring peace to citizens of Karachi”. This may be right or wrong, but Rehman Malik has not committed any treason. Will the IJT or the JI clarify on what basis they awarded an LLD to Ziaul Haq whose greatest act till 1978 was treason, the worst crime in Pakistan? The person who physically conferred the degree on General-CMLA Ziaul Haq was no other than Liaqat Baloch. At that time, he was president of the Punjab University Students Union. Now he is a deputy amir of the JI. He can explain the raison d’être of the conferment better than anyone else. When General Zia was awarded an LLD, there were no dissenting voices other than those of a few Punjab University professors. Most of them were sacked, and many of them were removed from department chairmanship. One of them was Professor Razi Abedi, a close friend of mine. He has recently told me that the police and intelligence agencies swooped down on pro-democracy/anti-Zia professors with a level of violence that is normally reserved only for murderers and drug-traffickers. In their ignoble task, the police and intelligence agencies were helped by student leaders and some Punjab University professors. I do support the IJT in its proposal that honorary degrees must not be awarded on political basis. Now that General Zia is gone, the Punjab University can revoke the LLD awarded to him. Shahbaz Sharif has complete control of the Punjab University. He can cast the first stone. This, I hope, will lead to the revoking of Malik’s award too. The real agenda behind the sound and fury over Malik’s degree is not the award per se. My understanding is that Malik is not the target at all. The real target is President Zardari, hated by the media, political parties, the ISI and the army (refer to WikiLeaks to learn about General Kayani’s love for Zardari). The formula is: whatever and whoever has Zardari’s support must be taken on. As a sidekick, the MQM can also be subjected to criticism because it is a Zardari ally. Thus, two birds can be killed with one stone. Geomentary - Mere Azeez Hum Watano. Story of the 3rd Martial Law - 21 Oct 2011 Part 2

DESPITE the many shortcomings of their alma mater, Karachi University graduates have been a proud bunch, having received a decent education and that too for next to nothing. Many of us students and our teachers braved perils everyday in just going to campus to receive/impart education as our counterparts do around the world routinely in safety. The word ‘peril’ isn’t being used loosely. One isn’t talking about the rickety ‘point’ buses which ‘flew’ us daily to the alma mater and back. In the years, I was reading economics at the Karachi University some half a dozen students were shot dead and dozens were injured in incidents involving student violence. Given how intense the automatic gunfire often was, it’s a miracle there weren’t more, many more, victims. Even teachers were not spared and some were assaulted, though it wasn’t as if they were targeted indiscriminately. Only those teachers were harassed and/or assaulted whose ideological leaning was to the left, something that was beyond forgiveness, reprieve as far as Zia and his surrogates in the Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba (IJT) were concerned. This nexus between IJT and the Zia regime was so well-established that after a professor was beaten black and blue by the famed Thunder Squad of the right-wing student group, the military governor of Sindh, the chancellor, then dismissed him from service citing the most dubious of reasons. In this repressive environment, the IJT seemed to gleefully act as the military ruler’s ‘B’ team. Its armed squads seemed to operate with impunity as long as they delivered on their part of the deal. Gen Zia wanted ‘peace’ on the university campuses and looked the other way as his ideological allies used all manner of brutal tactics to suppress ‘progressive’ dissent at the institutions. Ask Senator Hasil Bizenjo who was shot in the foot while taking part in an anti-Zia protest. If you look at the official patronage extended like a protective umbrella to the IJT not just on campus but throughout Karachi, it is surprising, a tribute to their tenacity, that anyone with a progressive bent of mind survived at all. Against such a backdrop, who would be surprised if the university administration including the vice-chancellor tilted towards the IJT? It may be unfair to say that Dr Masum Ali Tirmizi, the VC in our days, was ideologically allied to the IJT. Perhaps he was meek and found it easy to succumb to most of the IJT’s demands as the student wing of the Jamaat-i-Islami was aggressive and enjoyed the backing of the country’s military ruler who had recently overthrown and executed the elected prime minister. The point is he may have often favoured the right in his decisions and earned the ire of all progressive forces in the university but at no point did anyone mistake him for ‘Saif Bhai’ (Saifuddin), the bespectacled and pimpled IJT nazim (boss) then. This was a time, when the Zia regime, the Jamaat and its student wing ruled the roost. Following bloodletting between the Khalqi and Parchami wings of the governing (PDPA) People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, the Red Army had marched into Pakistan’s western neighbour. Hard-line Reagan had replaced the relatively soft Carter in the White House. The United States and its western allies embraced Zia and all Islamist forces in the country. The West saw them as vital pawns on the chessboard, as it took on the Soviets through these proxies. If the stranglehold of the right was loosened it was only for a day at a time as a handful of militant anti-Jamiat student activists offered no more than passing resistance. Despite killing two IJT activists on campus, they couldn’t dent the IJT’s near-permanent might and muscle. But even through this period, and yes I belabour the point, no matter how much he was castigated by the ‘progressives’, the vice-chancellor managed to more or less keep the dignity of his office intact. The recent bizarre decision of the University of Karachi to award an honorary doctorate to the minister of interior Rehman Malik for his services towards ‘peace’ in Karachi has left me bewildered. Mr Malik has been quoted in last Thursday’s Dawn as telling the cabinet he should be tasked with collecting the outstanding power bills as he had already succeeded in restoring peace to Karachi and Balochistan. Peace in Balochistan? Need one say more? And isn’t it public knowledge whatever modicum of peace has been brought to the metropolis is due to the suo moto action taken by the Supreme Court of Pakistan? Isn’t it true the main hero of the piece is one Ijaz Chaudhry, a major-general? Yes he was the director-general of the Rangers removed from office earlier this summer by the apex court after Sarfaraz Shah’s extra-judicial killing by the Rangers’ personnel was captured on camera in Karachi. His quiet return to office dramatically ended the spike in violence and the target killings in Karachi and he has been rewarded with a promotion to lieutenant-general. One eligible to command a corps would hardly feel the need for doctoral robes. There can be no doubt Rehman Malik earned the gratitude of the MQM when the party was feeling vulnerable and uneasy in trying to figure out the meaning of Zulfikar Mirza’s outburst especially at a time when it wasn’t even clear whose tune the former Sindh minister may have been marching to. Dr Pirzada Qasim, the current holder of the venerable office of the vice-chancellor, may have merely acquiesced in this award to a controversial sitting minister, making dubious claims about the restoration of peace. But how will he defend himself if his critics charge him with having acted like an MQM sympathiser. And don’t ask me if I am still proud of being a KU graduate. With brainwashing on the one hand and erosion of academic freedom on the other, the campuses (once temples of learning and enlightenment) have been turned into centres of rowdyism and repositories of deadly weapon. Students belonging to various schools of religious thought, regional and ethnic groups, particularly the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulba (the student wing of Jamat-e-Islami) , have played havoc with educational institutions. Professors were another target of the victimization carried out in this period. Members of the IJT launched a concerted campaign against professors known for their liberal views. In Punjab University, particularly, many professors were forced to resign, others were sacked. The situation was no different in the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, which had in the 70s attracted many brilliant Pakistanis who were teaching abroad. As the harassment became unbearable, most of these professors went back. To what extent fundamentalists blocked scientific knowledge can be assessed by one incident at the Karachi University, where a zoology lecturer was stopped from teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Similar incidents occurred frequently in the philosophy and the economics department. The situation has worsened wit the passage of time. During that period, a policy of appeasement towards the IJT made matter worse. Guns boomed at the Karachi University Campus for the first time in 1979 when, according to Imran Shirvanee, Raja Javed, a supporter of IJT, used a sten gun ‘to tackle the opposition.’ When the pen and free expression are throttled, the only means open to tackle opposition is a firearm. At that time, the IJT was the ruling party in Karachi University politics with Hussain Haqqani, Raja Javed was his close aide. Haqqani is a man of many roles. The former Far Eastern Economic Review correspondent was the media advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif when Benazir Bhutto was at the centre {1988-1990}. He switched to serve caretaker Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi in 1990, and then switched back again to serve Sharif when he was elected Prime Minister. In 1992, he was sent to Sri Lanka as Pakistan’s High Commissioner. On the eve of Nawaz Sharif’s dismissal on 18 April 1993, he jumped the sinking ship and joined President Ghulam Ishaq Khan bandwagon. Immediately, he was rewarded by being made a special assistant to the caretaker Prime Minister Mir Balakh Sher Mazari with the rank of Minister of State. Asked by BBC if he now deserved a mention in the Guinness Book of Records for switching loyalties so often, his reply was classic: I was always with the President.’”REFERENCE: The Web of Censorship by Late. JI-Qazi Hussain Ahmed Connections with Mehran Bank Scandal.

Islamabad—Former Army Chief General (Retd) Mirza Aslam Beg has demanded the military leadership to play its role and save the country from major disaster and warned that if it did not take an immediate step, the possibility of martial law cannot be ruled out. Reliable resources said that in a letter to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, General Aslam Beg drew his attention to the serious problems confronting the country and said that without any further wait, the army should play its role. The sources however said that General Aslam Beg’s letter did not mean that the army imposes martial law in the country. However, they said that the former army chief said that if the military did not take the corrective steps and allowed the things to remain, then such a situation could arise when the military could be forced to impose martial law. The sources further said that General Aslam Beg in his letter identified the crises which could emerge due to the situation created by the government. He said the government was paying no attention to the verdicts of the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and this could lead to resignation of the entire judiciary. He pointed out that after resignation by the judiciary, the PML-N members could tender resignations from national and provincial assemblies and that would push the country into a major crisis. General Aslam Beg said in such a situation, the army would have to intervene and the country could go under dictatorship for a long time. The sources said General Beg in his letter said if the army did not want this and its intentions are good, it should play a constructive role and pave the way for the formation of a national government. He said such a government should make endeavours to improve the situation in one year and then go packing after holding fair and transparent elections.—INP REFERENCE: Beg urges COAS to play role in saving country Friday, July 29, 2011, Shaaban-al-Moazzam 26, 1432 http://pakobserver.net/detailnews.asp?id=104363

Asghar Khan, a man of utter integrity (which explains why he consistently failed on the political front), in 1996 wrote a letter to the then chief justice of Pakistan advising him of how in the run-up to the 1990 elections the ISI had unlawfully distributed the people`s money for political purposes. His letter was converted into Human Right Petition no.19 of 1996. It was filed against Gen Mirza Aslam Beg, former chief of army staff, Lt Gen Asad Durrani, former chief of the ISI and Younus Habib of Habib Bank and then Mehran Bank. When forming the IJI, the ISI under instructions from the army chief and its own chief, used Mehran Bank funds to `buy` a large selection of politicians and functionaries who were charged with the task of `fixing` the elections so that Mian Nawaz Sharif and his merry IJI band would roundly defeat the PPP. In this, for once, the ISI pulled off a successful job. The hearing of the petition commenced in February 1997. The last hearing was on Oct 11 1999, one day before the military overthrew the second of the Nawaz Sharif governments, when the sitting chief justice announced that he had reserved judgment. Since then, Asghar Khan has sent letters to succeeding chief justices of Pakistan requesting them to `reopen` the matter — two were sent in 2002 asking for judgment to be handed down before that year`s elections, and one prior to the 2008 elections. He received no response. Now, with politics being what they are and the ISI yet again being in the foreground of matters national, could not the Supreme Court find time out from being bound up with constitutional matters, and bring this human rights petition to its logical conclusion? LAHORE: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has demanded of Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani justify extension in his term by presenting a balance-sheet of the anti-terror operation conducted under his command in the last three years and come out with a plan for the next three years. “The army chief should make public his agenda for his extended term besides telling the nation results of the anti-terror operation launched by him,” party chief Syed Munawwar Hasan told the media personnel here on Tuesday. He said claims were being made that peace had been restored in Swat and festivals were being held there to give an impression that the people were free there. To confirm the impression, he said, independent media should be allowed to go there as people were not ready to believe in the press releases issued by the directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations. If the situation in Swat valley had improved, as being claimed, troops should be withdrawn from there or else the government should admit failure of its policy, he said. He cautioned the government not to give in to American demand of conducting army operations in North Waziristan and south Punjab, otherwise terrorism would spread to every inch of the country. He regretted that Washington itself was wooing Taliban in Afghanistan to negotiation table, but was barring Islamabad from following the suit for establishing peace in its tribal areas. Referring to the ongoing target killing spree in Karachi, the JI leader said the port city had been left at the mercy of militants as ruling coalition partners were exposing each other’s role in the deteriorated law and order situation. Seeing a foreign agenda at work behind target killings in Karachi and Balochistan, he said it was aimed at creating anarchy in the country to propagate that Pakistan’s nuclear assets were unsafe and these should be given under international supervision. Hasan alleged that private US army, Blackwater, could be involved in the Data Darbar suicide bombings, while Interior Minister Rehman Malik was defending the agency. A joke on General (R) Ehsan is published in a Pakistani Tabloid "Ummat Karachi"

Mr. Irfan Siddiqui conveniently forgot this about Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Jamat-e-Islami, Formation of MMA and Role of General Ehsan in it:)

[singh_6.jpg]
MULTAN (February 16 2005): Farooq Maudoodi son of founder of Jamaat-i-Islami, late Abul Aala Maudoodi, has said that Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) had been created by ISI and it is a part and parcel of the military government and cannot part ways with President Pervez Musharraf. Talking to a group of journalists here on Tuesday he said: "Qazi Hussain Ahmed met the then ISI chief, General Ehsan-ul-Haq, then called on General Pervez Musharraf and later met US ambassador, then flew to United States. As soon as he returned, MMA was formed like IJI (Islami jamhoori Ittehad)." He said that IJI was organised by ISI and funds were also provided by it on the assurance of Qazi Hussain Ahmed, who had also played a key role in IJI. "Now he is playing major role in MMA." Bitterly criticising the MMA, Farooq said that the role of MMA is evidence of its loyalties with military regime. It had approved the 17th constitutional amendment which is in favour of the present regime. He said: "Where has the MMA movement gone while its leadership is claiming that it would continue till the achievement of objective of 'Uniform'?" Farooq said that Benazir knew very well about MMA and she had some reservations about it. He said that ISI has complete record of MMA leaders and they cannot escape. He said that politics ended in 1958 when Ayub imposed martial law. He said that plundering of evacuee trust property (Auqaf) and politics of clerics destroyed the politics of the country. Regarding deletion of column of 'religion' from Passport, he said that it was a good step and Ulema should have welcomed it but they made it part of their agitation to hoodwink the innocent Muslims.Farooq said that some bad things were added in the constitution by Zia-ul-Haq, which must be excluded, which had bred many ills. ends REFERENCE: 'MMA was created by ISI' RECORDER REPORT [Courtesy Business Recorder 2005] http://www.brecorder.com/index.php?id=198267&currPageNo=12&query=jamhoori&search=1&term=2004-10-012006-12-31&supDate=

Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Former Amir [Chief] of the Jamat-e-Islami
Qazi accuses Nawaz of trying to remove COAS

http://www.karachipage.com/news/Sep_99/092499.html
“LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Thursday accused Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of trying to remove the army chief on the pretext of 'Kargil failure'. "Nawaz is trying to get rid of the army chief after removing the previous army chief," he told a gathering of party workers in Dhok Kasib, a remote village in Mandi Bahauddin. He claimed the rulers had sought the US help to fulfil their aims, and Shahbaz Sharif's recent visit to the US was part of this effort. He added the rulers had assured the US that Pakistan would sign the CTBT in return for this help. The Jamaat chief also accused the rulers of seeking the US help against pro-Islamic forces in the country. But, he vowed, the US would not be able to save the rulers after the JI gave a call for a march on Islamabad. Qazi denied he ever wished to be the prime minister. "How come, anyone with integrity and self-respect opt for an office whose prestige has been lowered by Benazir and Nawaz," he said. Qazi said that the people wanted accountability from the days of British Raj to-date under a transparent system and before the next elections. "People also want an electoral system, free of corruption and loopholes. The people voted for Nawaz in the 1997 elections, considering him as an honest and a patriot person who would support the Kashmir and nuclear cause. But soon they saw his real face as he exploited the poor for his own benefits" he said. He said only those who were striving to oust the present government should be provided the opportunity to form the next government. He said his party wanted an Islamic revolution to establish a system based on justice and peace. NNI adds: Qazi Hussain Ahmed has convened high level meetings of the central leadership in the second week of October to finalise strategy against the government, Jamaat sources said.”

“The Nawaz Sharif exile deal has been criticised by political and religious parties alike. The Mullahs (religious leaders) of Pakistan, who control the Jihadi outfits, are clearly outraged by the mysterious release of Nawaz Sharif. Jamaat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman termed the deal an insult of the entire nation, saying it has brought into question the justification for the National Accountability Bureau and the accountability courts. The Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan's largest religious party, has been loudest and most persistent in attacking the Musharraf government for pardoning Nawaz Sharif. On 15 December 2000, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, head of the Jamaat-e-Islami, said Musharraf had shown that he could not be trusted when he let Nawaz Sharif escape a life sentence. "He has ignored public opinion, he has also ignored the laws, the constitution, the decisions of the court and he has not consulted anybody. He can do anything against the interests of the country and the nation. This is a security risk, he is a security risk," Qazi Hussain said. The Jamaat chief demanded that the military government should step down and an interim government be set up. General Musharraf was forced to justify his decision publicly. On 19 December 2000, General Pervez Musharraf addressed the nation on state television. In his speech, the General lashed out at the two former Prime Ministers, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, saying that the corrupt rule of these two leaders was responsible for Pakistan's present economic crisis. “As a result of their power hunger, the national economy suffered and investment shied away due to inconsistency in policies. Two political leaders, Pakistan's political stalwarts, who hated each other till yesterday, were shamelessly trying to join hands in an attempt to jointly loot the country, if anything had been left from looting,” he said. It was expected that Musharraf would divulge details of the Nawaz Sharif exile-deal but he did nothing of the sort. Musharraf claimed that there was some "confidentiality" involved in the deal which could not be disclosed keeping national interest in view. What this "confidential" information is, remains a mystery. His address to the nation also disappointed Pakistan's political and religious parties. "While abusing the politicians, General Sahib must keep in mind that he is the biggest politician of the country in uniform," Jamaat chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed said. This signals the end of General Pervez Musharraf's political honeymoon. He justified the coup with the promise to end political hanky panky and cleanse the system. Now he is just another politician and the hanky panky perhaps is just beginning all over again.”

Ziauddin told Dawn that armed with this knowledge the prime minister too had decided to remove General Musharraf though he (Ziauddin) was not aware of the details of what Nawaz Sharif had in mind. The government, he said, sprang into action when on October 12 Mr Sharif was about to proceed on a scheduled visit to Shujaabad, Multan. Shortly before he was about to leave the prime minister received a telephone call from a “reliable source”. This prompted the prime minister to remove General Musharraf. “To date Mian Nawaz Sharif has not disclosed who the caller on the other end was.” Ziauddin also said that despite heading the ISI, he was kept out of the loop by the rest of the military in the run-up to the coup. He explained that one of his junior officers, Major General Ghulam Ahmed, widely known as GA, was secretly reporting to Musharraf. He said that in the ISI, most of the postings were done by GHQ and hence if the DG ISI did not enjoy the confidence of the chief of army staff, he was not just ineffective but also helpless despite heading one of the strongest intelligence agencies in the country. He also disclosed that on the night of October 12, 1999, after the military had taken over, General Mahmud Ahmed visited him and suggested that he denounce the removal of Pervez Musharraf. Ziauddin refused and ended up in solitary confinement. “I refused to become party to the unconstitutional act carried out by the fellow Generals,” said Ziauddin. He held General Musharraf; then corps commander General Mahmud Ahmed; chief of general staff General Aziz Khan; vice chief of general staff Maj-Gen Ali Mohammad Jan Orakzai; DG MO Maj-Gen Shahid Aziz and others responsible for the coup. On the other hand, Lahore Declaration neither reflects the aspirations of the Pakistani nation, nor it is accepted by the people. This is a declaration of Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee belonging to BJP, the advocate of Akhand Bharat. By signing the Declaration, Nawaz Sharif has only tried to please the US and India, at the cost of disappointing, rather infuriating, his own nation. By doing so, he has exposed the nation and the state to new threats.

The present government of Pakistan and, more particularly, the Prime Minister suffer from an intense longing to befriend India. They are following a path that leads only to destruction. To work for preventing such a catastrophe is the duty of every patriotic citizen. An objective analysis of the situation reveals that Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif think that if they are to stay in power they have to ensure:

Complete subjugation of all constitutional organs, political forces and administrative machinery to establish a centralized rule so that they may enjoy exclusive decision-making authority;

Running of state affairs on the criteria of personal loyalty considering it the secret for perpetuating their rule;

Full compliance with American agenda. See salvation and progress in being part of its global order and work according to its scheme;
Friendship with India, at all cost;

Decrease in defense budget, downsizing the army and engaging it in civil affairs to make its interest subservient to that of the political leadership; or else the army loses popular respect and credibility along with the political leadership.

This is their actual 5-point manifesto. The points are inter-related and mutually reinforcing. These trends are manifest through the policies and deeds of the government over the past two years.

The prime minister is himself issuing provocative statements:

I can take advice from the elders of Pakistan Movement, but why should I seek guidance of those who opposed the idea of Pakistan;

I am being opposed because I decided for nuclear explosion and made Pakistan a nuclear power;

I want economic progress in the country and am building the motorway but these people do not want to see the country making progress.

All this is a bundle of lies and nonsense and merely aims at deceiving the masses. When he says that he is ready to consult the elders of Pakistan Movement, he should name those whom he has consulted? The daily Nawa-i-Waqt wrote more than 20 editorials only in two months (February and March 1999), against his attempts to befriend India. Did he pay any heed? Mr. Nizami refused to open the gate of Ewan-e-Iqbal for Vajpayee and threatened to resign if compelled. Whom the PM looked for advice, then? He says that he will not consult those who opposed the Pakistan Movement. Where he places Awami National Party (ANP) then? Its leadership has given him a real tough time yet his cronies are desperate in seeking its support even today!

ISLAMABAD, March 18: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed has revealed that Osama bin Laden had offered to buy loyalties of legislators to see Mian Nawaz Sharif as prime minister. In an interview appearing in the magazine of an Urdu newspaper on Sunday, Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that Osama had visited the JI headquarters Mansoora and wanted to strike an agreement with the Jamaat but the suggestion was declined by him. Excerpts of the interview were published by the newspaper on Saturday. Qazi said he had met Osama several times in the past.However, the JI on Saturday clarified that meetings between the JI amir and Osama in Peshawar and Lahore were held in days when the Al Qaeda leader was staying in Peshawar. Recalling political events that took place when Mr Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League and JI were components of the then Islami Jamhoori Ittehad, Qazi said Osama was a big supporter of IJI and Nawaz Sharif and wanted to see him Pakistan’s prime minister.

“Bin Laden was prepared to pay for buying parliamentarians’ votes to achieve this objective,” said Qazi Hussain Ahmed, who also heads the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal. He said a delegation sent by Osama had visited him in Peshawar and conveyed that they wanted cooperation from JI but “we declined the request”. In a statement issued on Saturday, a JI spokesman said that excerpts from interview were published in the daily and presented on a private TV channel in such a manner that they were creating confusion in the minds of people.— PPI. Pakistan's economic crisis and the government's failure By: Qazi Hussain Ahmed Ameer, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan

Anatomy of the Crisis

The foundations of the current crisis were laid by the previous Government of Mr. Nawaz Sharif when in April 1991, to ease the pressure from the Pressler Amendment restrictions, it allowed resident Pakistanis to open and maintain foreign currency accounts (FCAs), and floated a number of other expensive schemes for mobilization of foreign exchange resources. Through a crafty method, which required surrender of dollars to Government on the guarantee of exchange risk cover at nominal fee – which was significantly below the rate of devaluation – FCAs also became direct borrowings of the Government. Simultaneously, the Government also began contracting short and medium term commercial debt at high interest rates not only from foreign banks but also from international market, which were previously taboo in official finances.

The Benazir Government followed the tracks and did nothing to reverse this policy. Indeed, it was during her Government that still newer methods of short-term expensive borrowings were invented. The country heard for the first time that such precious resources as the earnings of PTC and PIA were to be pledged for seeking more loans. It was also during her tenure that for two consecutive years, 1995 and 1996, there was a run on foreign currency accounts, and the default was saved only after the IMF agreed to avert it and the country accepted tougher conditionalities.

The Second Nawaz Government has only added fuel to the fire. Far from breaking it the begging bowl was laid wide. It was seeking foreign loans even on the pledge of remittances. To appease IMF and obtain its funding, it massively reduced tariffs and gave huge concessions to big businesses, all in the grab of economic revival. A year later in 1997-98, rather than getting more revenues, it could barely collect as much as collected in 1996-97, which was the worst year of economic performance in country’s history.

At the end of June 1998, the total deposits under the FCAs were estimated at more than $ 12 billion, of which about 70% ($8.4 billion) were those of the residents, all mobilized between the period 1991 to June 1998, i.e. in just seven years. This means the Government has been using more than a $ 1 billion of residents’ deposits alone for meeting its foreign currency requirements. On the other hand, except for a brief period in 1994-95, at no point in time, the reserves of the country have risen above $2 billion (mostly hovering around $1 billion), indicating that the government has been using these deposits with out caring as to how it would meet a sudden in demand for withdrawals.

Besides the FCAs, there are obligations in the form of short term commercial debt and other foreign currency denominated bonds, such as FCBCs, DBCs and FEBCs. By the end of June 1998, these obligations are estimated at around $7 billion. Then there is the official long term debt owed to donor countries and multilateral agencies which is estimated by the end of June 1998 at about $25 billion. This is the debt, which was traditionally contracted by Pakistan until 1990. If we exclude FCAs for a moment, our debt come to $32 billion, of which the short-term debt is more than 20%, all added in the last 7 years.

The comparison becomes far more alarming when the FCAs liabilities are also added. The total short term debt then is nearly 42% of total debt, or 72% of long term debt. Finally, let us point out that the long term official debt in June 1990 was merely $ 15 billion and outstanding amount in FCAs (which were restricted until then to non-residents only) was only $2 billion. Thus is the last 8 years, the Government of Nawaz-Benazir combine have piled up additional foreign liabilities of $26 billion, averaging more than $3 billion annually. In 8 years they have added significantly more to country’s indebtedness than in the first 42 years.

The first Government of Nawaz and the second Government of Benazir were sacked on the ground that they had brought the country at the brink of default. Mr. Moeen Qureishi, in his address at the floor of the Senate, gave details of how the Nawaz Government had pushed the country towards bankruptcy by undertaking such economically unlivable schemes like the yellow cabs and the motorways. Similarly, Farooq Leghari also feared bankruptcy before he sacked the Benazir Government. Evidently, even at those occasions, the possibility of default was so real that they justified removal of the Government.

There has been no improvement since then. The SBP report of 1996-97 has clearly pointed out that short-term expensive loans are contracted to retire official loans, which were contracted, on extremely low cost. The present Finance Minster has no qualms when he pleads that Pakistan needs G-8 assistance only to repay their loans. He fails to notice that these very words contain the true state of Pakistan’s economy: it is already broke pending, at best, a formal announcement.

Nuclear Tests

Evidently, the economy was fast heading toward a breakdown. In our view, a window of opportunity was opened by country’s decisions to go nuclear. The nation solidly stood behind the Government and was prepared to make whatever sacrifices required to face the challenges the retaliatory response of the big powers would have posed. There was never a doubt in anybody’s mind that this act of ‘defiance’ will not be met with kindness. The nation’s resolved to test fully factored in the costs it had to incur for this act.

What the nation, however, did not expect was that the Government would rob it of its fundamental rights and foreign currency accounts in the grab of emergency. The euphoria of testing hardly lasted the night of the testing, as the nation woke up to discover that it was stripped of its precious political rights and life-time savings. This was followed by a series of confidence-shattering decisions – a budget that did not take into consideration that impact of impending sanctions, withdrawal of immunity on FCAs, a hoax call for defreezing of FCAs, mishandling of IPPs, panicky response to the threat of default, curbs on imports etc. – that sent the stock market into tailspin, wiping out nearly 30% of its capitalization, and forced the rupee to lose more ground in a month than it lost in the last 5 years.

Thus the opportunity, which had led some Cabinet Ministers to claim that Pakistan’s tests were uniting and India’s were divisive, was squandered mercilessly. The extremely short-lived euphoria has yielded to a state of despair. The national mood is despondent, it sees no light at the end of long and dark tunnel of Government’s follies.

The donor countries also believe that the crisis was not a result of nuclear testing. A State Department Spokesman, denying the rumors that the US was working on a bail out plan for Pakistan, remarked that the present crisis in Pakistan was not a result of suspension of G-8 funding, which in the first place did not go into effect for another 6 months. Rather, it was the result of polices pursued over the 18 months.

Loss of Confidence

Is there a way out of this morass? Can the Government steer the country from the brink of a financial collapse? These and similar questions are agitating the minds of every Pakistani. In our view, there are ways to retrieve the situation or at least to minimize the adverse consequences being felt and are likely to be faced in future. But the present Government would not be able to see us through this crisis. This is a considered view, based on the premise that the Government has lost the confidence of the market.

Indeed, the most pressing problem facing the country is the loss of confidence on Government’s ability to mange its economic affairs. Almost every single Government move on the economic front since its decision to go nuclear has acted as a bane for economic activities. This is not to suggest that each one of these decisions was bad. Only, that the market no longer trusts Government’s word, and is more likely to misperceived its moves than to see tem in their true perspective.

To be precise, the normal signaling mechanism between the Government and the market has broken. It is hard to find a method, which can repair and revive this mechanism. Confidence is not a tangible asset. It belongs to the realm of perceptions, formed over a long period of time and tested on the touchstone of predictability of actions and credibility of commitments. For 50 long years, despite earning a horrendous reputation in running the administration of the state, the successive Governments had somehow preserved the state’s reputation of fulfilling its financial obligations. That reputation has been remorselessly destroyed by the decision to freeze foreign currency accounts. And as is true of all matters of reputation and trust, it is not required that the breach be repeated several time before the confidence is lost. A single event may suffice.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what has happened with Pakistan. There is no hope that this Government would be able to retrieve the country from the economic morass in which its policies have led it. The only honorable way for the Government, which also precludes the possibility of complete chaos in the economy, would be to resign and let a new set of people manage the economy and restore the market confidence.

Indeed, Benazir and Nawaz Sharif have taken turns in bringing the country to the present state of economic collapse. There has been absolutely no difference in the economic management of the two governments. Both relied on foreign loans, indiscriminate privatization and depended heavily on the support and assistance of IMF /World Bank, which authored all major policy initiatives during this period. Their priorities were highly misplaced, such as yellow cabs, motorways, in the case of the NS, and excessive reliance on private power, in the case of BB. Besides enriching themselves, both promoted crony capitalism at the expense of the State.

Corruption, nepotism and politicization of economic decisions have been the distinguishing features of their rule. Both would be quick to ask sacrifices from the poor of the country, while they maintain a life of extravagance and profligacy. The nation sees little differences whether the PM House builds a polo ground or a cricket stadium; whether the palaces are maintained in Surrey or in Raiwind. They have finally began to appreciate what we have been calling for the last five years: Nawaz and Benazir are the two sides of the same coin.

We have no hesitation to suggest that the continuation of present Government may jeopardize its critical security interests as it seems keen to plead the super power to lift the sanctions. The manner in which the Government is holding talks on this subject as to what guarantees it may be willing to give to seek resumption of G-8’s funding. A weak and incompetent Government may be tempted to bargain country’s critical interests on CTBT, NPT, Nuclear Program and Kashmir.

Sir, you can trust a Drunkard but not these Mullahs specially if the Mullah is of Jamat-e-Islami because in the statement below JI Chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed had declared that Nawaz Sharif is a traitor. I wonder what the hell Qazi Hussain Ahmed is doing with a Traitor in a National Conference???? Qazi Sahab often forget [as all liars do] that not in a very distant past his alliance MMA which had shared power with General Musharraf's Martial Law Regime from 2002-2007 had helped passed LFO i.e. 17 th Constitutional Amendment and if that was not enough Qazi Hussain had sent a delegation to the USA who visited Pentagon and US Defence Department to plead the Case of Islamic Hasbah Bill [Point is to be noted Islamic Bill in Pentagon]

JI for Jehad against Kargil betrayal

The News LAHORE: The Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday called for Jehad against Nawaz Sharif's government for betraying the nation by signing the Washington accord on the Kashmir issue. "Nawaz and Pakistan can't co-exist," JI Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad told tens of thousands of his party workers, who staged the biggest anti-government protest since freedom fighters pulled out of occupied Kashmir.

"Nawaz has to quit," the mammoth crowd roared as Qazi asked the nation to stand up as a sovereign nation and reject the Washington Accord, Simla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration signed by few traitors. "Let's celebrate our Independence Day next month as an absolutely sovereign and independent nation," he told the crowd, which gathered outside the Punjab Assembly after marching on The Mall from Nasir Bagh.

The rally failed to attract the million people the JI had hoped to muster but the 50,000-strong protest by supporters shouting "Down with America" was by far the biggest of a series of scattered opposition-backed demonstrations.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad accused the prime minister of being autocratic and said the July 4 withdrawal pact with Clinton was unforgivable. "It is imperative for the resolution of the Kashmir issue and for the safety and solidarity of the country that Nawaz Sharif should be removed from the office of prime minister," said a mock "charge-sheet" read to the crowd chanting slogans and reciting Kalima. Qazi said it was time to tell the US its New World Order was not acceptable to us as it was only "a new world disorder aimed at depriving Muslims of their independence and sovereignty". The JI chief also warned the United States not to mount another attack on Osama bin Laden. "This will not be in the interest of America. They will invite great danger," he said. He said the US was playing a dangerous game and will suffer ultimately.

Addressing the West, Pakistan's biggest Islamic party chief said the Muslims were not terrorists or intolerant . "They only want to live with peace and justice, and will not allow any state terrorism in their territories," he said. He said Islam was a religion of peace and justice for the whole mankind. Hitting out at the government for its Kashmir policy, Qazi said Nawaz had committed "an unforgivable crime by showing cowardice against a besieged army in Kashmir".

"It was shameful for the head of the only nuclear Muslim state to accept becoming a satellite state of India despite having a historic and tactical edge over the enemy," he said. He reminded the rulers that peace could not be achieved by begging or avoiding the battlefield. "History shows that only those nations who always remained ready for a war lived in peace," he said. He said the threat of a war was not over even after the Washington accord.

Qazi pointed out that the spirit of Jehad and allegiance to the Almighty were what distinguished Muslims from non-Muslims and give them a vital edge over their enemies. He accused Nawaz Sharif of insulting the spirit of Jehad by equating it with the war hysteria and causing an atmosphere of cowardice through state-owned electronic media.

Qazi accused Nawaz Sharif of betraying and bypassing the nation, his cabinet and parliament on a vital decision. He also censured Nawaz Sharif for refusing an unconditional support by opposition and other political parties on the issue. Qazi said the time had come to dislodge Nawaz Sharif from Islamabad.

He cited numerous "crimes" of Nawaz Sharif committed over the last two and half years including subjugating parliament, president, chief justice and the COAS, and his failure to keep electoral promises of uprooting corruption, recovering plundered national wealth and introducing austerity in national character. He also lashed out at the government for its failure to revive economy and throw off the begging bowl. Qazi said the only way to avert national destruction was to throw off the present dishonest rulers and bring in a pious leadership.

Qazi appealed to all political, religious parties and organisations to unite by shunning all political, religious and sectarian differences for salvaging the independence of the nation which, he said, was in grave danger. He asked PPP and PML to rise on the occasion for the sake of national integrity.

He said the movement against the government had started and its ultimate destiny was a "glorious Islamic revolution". He said now it was on the people to step up this movement and make it a success. Qazi announced that soon his party would hold similar rallies in Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Quetta before giving a final call for a march towards Islamabad.

Qazi said his party stood for love, justice and peace all over the world. He said his party was willing to extend friendship to India, provided it granted the Kashmiris their independence. He urged the Lahorites to reject the Indian culture imposed on them under a conspiracy. He also appealed to the people to stop watching Indian movies. Qazi accused the administration of obstructing the rally and announced his party would observe a countrywide protest day next Friday against the government attitude. Later, a JI spokesman alleged the police tried to sabotage the rally by preventing the participants and workers of different cities from coming to Lahore. He alleged a large number of buses were stopped and JI workers were off-loaded in a number of cities. He said police hijacked party buses in Sahiwal just when they were about to leave for Lahore.

I read this headline on, THE NEWS website, Tension between Zardari, Shahbaz mounts over jailed chief editor of The Frontier Post''. This makes no sense that Rehmat Shah Afridi is still in prison, I was expecting from ANP Govt in pukhtoonistan to react on this issue but I don't understand muteness of ANP leadership, although on ANP web site I did send a message to Chief Minister, I would like to ask all the writers on this forum to send messages to CM on the following website of ANP(http://www.awaminationalparty.org/news/)and express your solidarity with The Frontier Post Chief Mr. Afridi who is in prison because he was punished for expressing his views and he was educating Pakhtuns through his newspaper. His confinement is politically motivated. The drugs were planted on vehicle he was in. Similar to innumerable judicial murders and crimes to suffocate voice of Pathans. The literate class of people in Pakistan is the only hope, which can place a check & balance on these bureaucrats corrupt politicians. Its about time this class should pick their pens. Its really amazing that criminals and thugs involved in suicide attacks can be easily released in Pakistan but someone like Mr. Afridi stays in prison. Two face Nawaz Sharif and his brother who are responsible for declaring Pakistan a failed state ran out of country but did not have courage and principles to face jail, attacked Supreme Court and insulted judges but now wants to be champions of judiciary and free press.

Rehmat Shah Afridi [Frontier Posts] Exposes Nawaz Sharif (PML-N)'s Corruption 2

I agree with Mr. Asif Ali Zardari who bitterly asked: "Where are the champions of the press freedom today? Rehmat Shah Afridi was arrested and booked in a fake drug smuggling case on political grounds. He spent nine years in jail just for writing the truth and now he is seriously ill but some people still want to take their revenge. "Champions of the press freedom should be ashamed of themselves that for nine years some one in their ranks is in prison but they are not saying a word. Rehmat Shah Afridi was punished because he disclosed that Nawaz Sharif received Rs. 150 crore from Osama bin Ladin in the Green Palace Hotel, Madina, with the pledge that the amount would be used for furthering the cause of Jihad in Afghanistan and helping the Mujahideen and exposing the deeds of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Instead he (Nawaz) put the whole amount in his pocket. Nawaz Sharif got annoyed with Afridi when he was chief minister of Punjab in 1986.Frontier Post Chief disclosed in his newspaper that Nawaze sold the commercial land between UCH and Kalma Chowk in Lahore to his relatives for meager Rs. 400 per marla.

Rehmat Shah Afridi [Frontier Posts] Exposes Nawaz Sharif (PML-N)'s Corruption 3

Rehmat Shah Afridi [Frontier Posts] Exposes Nawaz Sharif (PML-N)'s Corruption 4

After that, he distributed plots in NWFP, Punjab and Balochistan among his colleagues and opponents to get their political support. He published all this in his newspaper along with proofs, which further infuriated Nawaz Sharif. Rehmat Shah Afridi used his personal links to thwart the "no-confidence motion" against Benazir Bhutto in 1990 and asked the members of National Assembly from Punjab, FATA and NWFP to use their vote in favour of Benazir Bhutto. Mr. Afridi did so as it was in the interest of the country at that time. Nawaz Sharif once threatened him that they would rule the country for 20 years and that he (Rehmat Shah) could not harm him through publishing news items against them. This proves all cases against The Frontier Post chief were false and baseless. Detention of Rehmat Shah Afridi is no more justified. Rehmat Shah Afridi had been arrested in a fake and bogus case because the then government was not happy with his bold editorial policy. The PPP government's pro-media and democratic credentials have already been enhanced by the proposed anti-PEMRA bill in parliament. It should now do the honourable and just thing by ordering the immediate release of Rehmat Shah Afridi and winning hearts and minds all round. Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Former Amir [Chief] of the Jamat-e-Islami

Qazi seeks all parties' support: Jamaat launches 'new phase' of anti-govt drive

Dawn LAHORE, July 25: Alleging that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had committed 'unforgivable crimes' signing of the Washington statement being the latest, Jamaat-i-Islami amir Qazi Husain Ahmed on Sunday launched "a new phase" of anti-government movement.

He appealed to workers of all other parties, including the PPP, to work under his leadership to oust the rulers and avert dangers to the integrity of the country.

Addressing participants in a 'million-man march' who had come to Lahore from various parts of the Punjab, the JI leader declared that the movement would continue till it reached its logical end -- a magnificent Islamic revolution in the country.

The rally started from the Nasser Bagh to the Charing Cross where a stage had been set up for speakers. From the Charing Cross to the Regal Chowk, people could be seen on both sides of The Mall as well as service roads.

Qazi Husain Ahmed joined the participants at the Charing Cross.

Journalists had also come from Islamabad and other cities to report the event.

Heavy police contingents had been deployed to avoid any untoward incident. Punjab PPP President Rao Sikandar Iqbal and MPA Muazzam Jehanzeb Wattoo were also present.

In his hour-long speech, punctuated with slogans, the JI chief listed a number of 'crimes' Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had committed after returning to power for the second time in Feb 1997.

"Now Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan cannot go together. He will have to quit".

He said Mr Sharif's tenure was the blackest of all periods in the past and the Washington declaration was the culmination of all 'offences' of the prime minister.

Qazi Husain said his party would hold rallies in other important cities like Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi. Thereafter, he said, he would give a call for a march on Islamabad where the people would also stage a sit-in.

Lashing out at the prime minister for deciding to withdraw Mujahideen from the Kargil heights despite the fact that they were in very advantageous positions, Qazi Husain said Mr Sharif had lost the war of nerves. He said he buckled under the Western pressure at a time when India was not in a position to go for a war against Pakistan without risking a full-scale revolt in occupied Kashmir.

The JI leader said the Washington declaration served Indian interests and stabbed the freedom fighters in the back. In his opinion, acceptance of the sanctity of the Line of Control would mean acquiescing to the division of Kashmir which was simply not tolerable. He said Pakistan and Kashmir were inseparable and as long as Kashmir was not liberated from India's occupation, the people of Pakistan could not regard themselves free.

Reiterating that the Kashmir issue would never be resolved through bilateral talks between India and Pakistan as New Delhi continued to insist that Kashmir was its integral part, the Jamaat leader said it was a great injustice that Mr Sharif had 'bilateralized' the issue through the Washington communique.

He said Mr Sharif had ignored the sacrifices of 75,000 Kashmiris for the independence. He said he would be held accountable for the lapse on his part. Similarly, he said, Mr Sharif could not be forgiven for accepting Kashmiri Mujahideen as 'intruders'.

Qazi Husain said Mr Sharif had insulted the army as an institution by forcing former COAS Gen Jehangir Karamat to resign.

He also criticized Mr Sharif for converting the federal parliamentary system into prime ministerial system, reducing parliament to the status of a rubber stamp, storming the Supreme Court building and failing to promote industrialization or repay dues to co-op scam victims.

In his opinion, it would be wrong to assume that the possibility of a war between Pakistan and India had been averted.

"Subservience to the mighty cannot avert a war. Preparedness for war is the best way to ward it off".

He said his party did not want war with India. Instead, it was in favour of good neighbourly relations with India but it would not be possible unless the Kashmir dispute was resolved.

He appealed to the people to boycott Indian films and remove video shops.

Punjab JI amir Hafiz Muhammad Idrees asked the PML workers to join hands with the Jamaat. He said the people now controlling the PML had nothing to do with the party and a revolt against them was justified

Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Former Amir [Chief] of the Jamat-e-Islami

Qazi says Nawaz turned victory into defeat

Nation LAHORE-Jamaat-i-Islami's 'Million March' on Kargil issue Sunday remained highly successful and impressive. It proved to be a peaceful demonstration removing all apprehensions of possible violence in expressing resentment against Nawaz-Clinton Accord. The rally comprising tens of thousands of people assembled at Shahra-i-Quaid-i-Azam after it marched from Nasir Bagh around 4.30 pm. The rally reached Masjid-i-Shuhada to offer Asr prayers and later it turned into a public meeting which was addressed by JI leaders before it dispersed peacefully.

Addressing the meeting, Amir Jamaat-i-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that a movement has been launched with the success of Kargil rally for a grand Islamic revolution after toppling out Nawaz Sharif government. Soon similar public rallies will be organised at Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi after which a call will be given to the people to march to Islamabad. He said the Independence Day on August 14 will be celebrated to give message to Kashmiris that the whole nation stood shoulder to shoulder with them. The nation has rejected Washington Accord and Lahore Declaration. He also declared next Friday as protest day throughout the country.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that Nawaz Sharif is the person who bargained the national honour and prestige. 'He is responsible for bringing the nation from the peak of glory of Kargil to the fall at Washington. This is an unpardonable offence. As such Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan cannot go together. Nawaz Sharif harassed the nation by proclaiming the repercussions of war while he forgot that in war, India would have also suffered losses. India was not in a position to open large-scale war as its army was engaged in Kargil, Siachin etc. Nawaz Sharif wanted to undermine jehad for a dialogue but if this spirit was destroyed, who will agree on dialogues, he asked?

He said Nawaz Sharif not only turned the victory into defeat but also caused loss to the country by creating price-hike, unemployment forcing people to commit suicides, making mockery of Shariat Bill, replacing weekly holiday of Friday with Sunday and turning Parliament into a rubber stamp. 'He forcibly took resignation of COAS which is an insult of the army and ransacked the Supreme Court,' he said. He further said that Nawaz Sharif blackmailed the Press and hijacked the ehtesab movement while no accountability of corrupt persons was undertaken. The trade and business was ruined and industry suffered a setback The chargesheet against Nawaz Sharif comprises a long list of follies while the culmination of his follies was Washington Accord on Kargil. Qazi Hussain said it is high time for the nation to get rid of him. Nawaz Sharif begged for peace in a very disgraceful manner. The peace cannot be restored by yielding to the oppressor. War has not been averted but the dangers of war have been increased. The Kargil does not contain any mention of 70,000 martyrs nor there is any pertinent promise for the solution to Kashmir issue according to UN Resolutions. The Accord is nothing except to implement American New World Order with Indian hegemony in the region. This is shameful for nuclear Pakistan and the entire Muslim Ummah of which Pakistan is a leader. Pakistan is not confined to the geographical boundaries but it exists within the unlimited boundaries of Muslim world and even within India. He said that the Accord called for unilateral withdrawal from Kargil. The Accord promises that Clinton will take interest in Kashmir and encourage Pakistan and India to resolve their problems bilaterally according to Simla Agreement and Lahore Declaration while one of the two countries hesitates to accept Kashmir as a disputed territory. India accepts Kashmir dispute to the extent that one part of it, is occupied by Pakistan. He said there is no use of any dialogue with India unless it recognises Kashmir as a disputed territory.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad deplored that America summoned Pakistan ambassador to express its concern on the killings of 15 Hindus but it remained silent on the killings of 70,000 Kashmiris at the hands of Indian security forces. He asked as to who will take the accountability of Nawaz Sharif of all these foul-plays? The participants shouted that they are prepared to take the accountability of Nawaz Sharif. Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that the successive governments buried the Kashmir issue through Tashkent and Simla Agreements while the Kashmiri Mujahideen kept alive this issue by rendering sacrifices since the recent uprising which began in 1989.

The Kashmir issue was internationalised by Kashmiris with their blood but the Nawaz-Clinton Accord again made it a bilaterial and local issue. This is an offence never to be pardoned. He said some unscruplous persons say that Pakistan's security cannot be put at stake at the cost of Kargil.
